A Kelly Reichardt movie starring Michelle Williams? Of course we had to review "Showing Up." This dramedy set in the Portland, Oregon art world features dry humor, subtle tension and some lovely performances. Co-starring Hong Chau, Judd Hirsch, John Magaro, Andre Benjamin and Maryann Plunkett. This is the fourth film Williams has made with the writer-director, following "Wendy And Lucy," "Meek's Cutoff" and "Certain Women." It's in theaters now.

6/10...Seen all her films and this is my second least favorite of hers. Doesn't mean its a bad movie just comparing it to her other films. My Kelly Reichardt Films Ranked: 1. Wendy and Lucy 2. Night Moves 3. Meeks Cutoff 4. Certain Women 5. First Cow 6. Old Joy 7. Showing Up 8. River of Grass

I loved Showing Up. I can't think of any other film that lets you hang out with artists at such a leisurely pace, letting you really get a feel for how they work. That was a real eye-opener for me. There is a plot and there is tension, but the tension comes from the jeopardy of e.g. whether the Chekhov's cat or Chekhov's pigeon will destroy the ceramics, or whether Lizzy's narcissistic landlady will fix her boiler - rather than whether Superhero A's fighting skills are better than Superhero B's. This kind of jeopardy is much more relatable and meaningful, if you're a grown-up, than the fake jeopardy that is based on the relative physical strength, telekinesis powers or karate chops of some mannequins in jumpsuits.

When it ended, as I often do when I see a Kelly Reichardt film, I said to myself, "That was sublime". Michelle Williams always seems to do her best work with this filmmaker. I think Hong Chau was so perfect in this, nailing a type of passive-aggressive narcissism while scoring a few points where her arguments also kind of ring true at times. Alonso, I think this one is a grower, not a shower. Sure, the bird is not the subtlest of metaphors, but Reichardt never pushes the drama and just lets things unfold in such a lovely humane fashion here. Give it a week!

Showing Up seems to have disappeared. It never was released in April. A few critics suggested it was Oscar Bait worthy, and now it looks that, instead, its going to Cannes, and then the festival cycle. So much for seeing a nice indie in the spring off season.

This didn't work for me. There's not enough story for its feature length. It might have worked as a short. There's a lot of dead space. I call it walking around movies. l liked First Cow, but I feel movies have the responsibility to entertain, and this didn't totally. It's not enough for films to carry an intellectual message or point. By definition, movies are entertainment, and that's what the industry was built on. Showing Up didn't meet the required standard. Also, for an art film there's very little character development. Michelle Williams and Hong Chou were kind of one-note. Kelly favored silence and common daily chores over character arcs. My score is a 4.

I saw it and had to fight off sleep for the first fifteen minutes. I understand it's an intentionally slow paced and almost static look at creating art, but I wish the film had more to say other than just looking at another central character overcoming adversity. I think it needed to be a touch more didactic to loop in the mainstream viewer.

No one’s looking out for her? That’s a simplistic reading of the film. She works for her mother in a beautiful and creative environment.. she lives next to her artist friend who’s also her landlord and pays low rent.. she’s a fun and outgoing character who comes to her show too (liz didn’t go to her show).. someone up and coming is taking an interest in her and her work.. she has a loving dad and a brother with some issues (who doesn’t) the film is about how she’s focused on all the negatives in her life (like too much or too little cheese at her art show, or throwing out the bird first but then found joy in taking care of it and not wanting to let the bird go) to see all the amazing things she has.. the ending is supposed be a change as she realizes to let go of things, stop controlling every bit of detail and enjoy life more..

I don’t understand the appeal of Reichardt’s films. I’ve seen three of them, and while I enjoyed them all, I don’t see genius in them by any stretch of the imagination. There are SO many female filmmakers working today who are so much more brilliant: Debra Granik, Chloe Zhao, Sarah Polley, Julie Taymor, Celine Sciamma, Jane Campion, Tamara Jenkins…
