Howdy y’all, thanks for stopping by! I had a real fun time rambling about all of these shows, so I hope you enjoyed hearing about ‘em too! \(^^)/ All the links for donating to the Bards4Bards 2021 charity drive, as well as links for all of the musicals mentioned in this video, are up in the description! (Also, as a heads up: I’m not gonna be putting prints of Starry and Epic on my Redbubble store ‘cause they’re specifically inspired by shows made by small independent teams, so I’d rather any support y’all wanna give went to the creators of the shows themselves instead 💖)
@ABD Illustrates Can you draw each of the Heartless characters doing their one of their special/ultimate moves? Can you also make more team members for Team Heartless or rivals for each team member of Heartless? Also is it also possible that their magics starts to develop as time passes or start to do more than what their respective magics can do? Is it possible we may see some siblings if some of the Heartless characters do have siblings?
Alex. Alex. Alex Alex Alex. First of all, thank you for this gift, I *will* be listening to Starry on loop for the next week. Second of all: Go listen to We Are The Tigers it is So Fucking Good.
OH. MY. GOSH!!! I am so honored and thankful that you saw my TikToks of EPIC and liked it!!! Thank you SO SO SO MUCH for taking the time to create such a beautiful work of art, and thank you for your amazing and thoughtful description of the show and for spreading the word about it! This means the world to me, your artwork is gorgeous and I teared up multiple times seeing you bring these characters to life.
woah dude omg-- thank YOU for putting so much time and hard work into making such a fab show!!! It's been super fun to see how it's all coming together on your page, and it was super fun to have a go at drawing somethin' for it! I'm so happy you like the art 💖💖 Pls keep up the great work, I'm really looking forward to hearing the full album someday! 😤💪
I don't use the Tiktok, or most social media, I am infinitely happy about this discovery, you are making a wonderful thing, and I shall now pay attention, and tell my humans, because they will be happy too! Ok, my brother wasn't happy, because it's apparently 6am, but he's always cranky anyway. I will target the others at not sleepy-times.
For anyone who doesn't know: The Lightning Thief has a musical, for some reason, and also, for some reason, it has some great songs?? I'll admit to having a HUGE Percy Jackson bias, but D.O.A. _slaps_
Wow. WOW! We are speechless. Our creators and team were moved to tears from your Starry piece... Thank you for capturing the heart of our show, for expressing these feelings through your own artistry... just, thank you. It is magic ✨ and THANK YOU for sharing and spreading the word on our little show. Your support gives us those breaths of life needed to keep going, onward & onward 💫
asdfgh-- y'all can't hit me with lyrical references like that I'm gonna cry again 😭💖 All of you on the Starry team are a whole bunch of superstars, and your show deserves every bit of love, appreciation and recognition that it gets, and much more beyond! 💖⭐
Coming back to the video that introduced me to Starry, which is easily hands down my favourite musical by a country mile, is honestly pretty emotional. Thank you ABD for introducing me to a musical which helped me push through to the point where I'm not a couple days out from moving so I can go to art school. And thank you to the Starry team for making a musical that I cannot describe how much I love in words. I can listen to it when I need peace and quiet but also when I just want to belt out songs and dance around. I can't wait to see it in London next year when it comes to West End.
Alex: "This next musical is actually being written by one guy alone in his home" Me: "There is no way he's talking about EPIC" Alex: "It's called EPIC" AKJSCSIBC DUDE THAT IS SO COOL, I'M SO GLAD MORE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS EPIC MUSICAL (pun intended) LET'S GET HYPED !!!
AAA I'VE SEEN SO MUCH OF EPIC!! I don't have Tik Tok but my friends do and they send clips to me that remind them of their characters and the songs are incredible! 😍💞
I cannot get over Vincent's expression in that drawing it just looks so soULFUL AND HOPEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL LIKE THE BITTERSWEET REALIZATION THAT YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN GRAY-SCALE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE AND THIS IS TRUE COLOR AND I CAN'T HANDLE IT AAAAAAA
Actually wriggled out of watching Mary Poppins with my family to go see his valentines musical speedpaint, my dad's argument was "But you love musicals!" he seems to be under the impression that because i'm prone to talking about Hadestown or Beetlejuice and how great they both are. gold star for effort on his part though!
Though this comment may be buried and un seen here goes, All your designs and techniques motivate me to keep drawing, i use procreate to draw and I only ever drew anime characters back in school but then moved to monster and furry designs ,human like characters are my weakest art link and your work helps me out tremendously , it makes me feel like in time i too can draw humans and maybe some day Phantom of the Opera and other classics! Your art is fantasy, bold and your personality shines in your work! Thank you for all the youtube content you make! Thank you for reading and liking ^^
It's totally the same with me, I really love seeing other artists and Alex's work has inspired me in developing my own unique art style. His drawings have shown me that digital art is amazing, that its not lame to like D&D and all ideas have something good in them. Like seriously Alex has accidentally started a fandom out of a bunch of OCs he made when he was 15, my age.
Me: Sees thumbnail “IS THAT STARRY????? IS THAT FUCKING STARRY????” Let’s just say I’m very happy right now. (And seconding that smaller-scale productions part, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen was a smaller musical in NYC and I’m still enthralled by it to this day)
I just finished listening to Starry and he was NOT kidding about how sappy that musical makes a person. jesus christ i am so emotional right now. anyway it's a banger
/slaps knee EVERY TIME Vincent Van Gogh gets brought up my brain supplies me with that one Dr Who ep where they bring him into a museum & he starts crying. And then I start crying also. Excellent video 10/10 would cry again.
Not even sure if this counts because there’s not really a script and it’s never been on stage, but I implore you all to listen to The Raven Locks! Basically it’s about this hat-maker who falls in love with a woman, then immediately gets her killed and goes on a very trippy and ambiguously real journey to bring her back. It’s got a morally dubious protagonist, great themes, and of course stunning music. I can’t put into words how good the music is. If I had to pick three songs to recommend for someone who wants to try out the show, I’d say Solemn Dream, She Was the Gateway to the Empire/Fallen (either one or two songs depending on the version of the soundtrack but I’m counting it as one), and Furthest Star. Honorable mentions go to Bring Her Back (my favorite song in the show), Wasteland (catchy, peppy, and makes fun of the protagonist a lot), and Justice (killer vocals and summarizes the plot from the perspective of the protagonist, the woman who died, and the narrator). Also if you want to know the plot you’ll have to look through these old archived facebook livestreams but it’s totally worth it lol.
Oh man, I've been meaning to give that a look! I've heard a couple of tunes from it (The Same As I being the one that immediately comes to mind) and I've heard some of Dirt Poor Robins' other songs. Good good stuff
I’m glad to have caught the attention of two people already! It’s one of my favorite musicals so it would be super cool if it had a bigger community. I have a playlist on Spotify with the highlights of the show because the whole thing is around 2 hours and I don’t always have that kind of time, so I can try and link it if anyone’s interested (:
@@sofiazazulak8271 That’s a good one but one of the weakest in the soundtrack imo. I’m going to send it in a different reply but lmk if it gets filtered and you don’t see it.
It's 7PM and I'm writing an exam tomorrow in a subject I'm absolutely terrible at and I haven't learned yet. Is this more important? Yes, yes it definitely is.
I absolutely LOVE legally blonde!!! The only time I've seen the musical was also at a small, local theater, so I feel the exact same way about how great even a small production of this show is!
I’d never heard of Starry up until this point, but the idea of the final song being called wheat field and it sounds like don’t fear the reaper? I actually fucking cried okay
Sooo excited! *Plays Starry, gets 3/4 the way through the second song, husband walks in the room. *“Are you watching that Harry Potter musical again?!” Wife: impressed, then explains that cast.
I don't know what kind of music you like, but based on your general aesthetic and the shows you drew I think that you'll really like the mechanisms! they were a British folk band that took myths and legends and repurposed them to make gay grim tragedies in space! They may have disbanded (or "died") at the start of 2020, but a lot of their live shows are still up on youtube and are all a great fun watch :D
I just want to let you know that I've watched this video a few times and, as someone who doesn't watch musicals often, I cry when you get to the artwork for Starry. The expression, concept, composition and honestly everything about it just gets me so emotional and I don't know why so I commend you for that piece in particular.
Man, I KNOW I’m gonna cry like a baby when I hear Starry because just looking at your drawing already made me emotional ;-; Such an amazing composition, it’s probably my favourite art you’ve made!
You don't need to worry about being overemotional. I was nearly in tears with your drawing from Starry. I haven't seen it, haven't heard it but YOUR love for it and emotion within it was clear enough to affect me and I honestly wish I could have a print of it.
I started watching for Starry (I've spent hours listening to Starry Night too, it's just SO GOOD), but when the second drawing started I was like "is this Epic?? Omgs, is this Epic?!?" and IT WAS and I got really excited and ahshdhifkf I love this video
Loved the video! I found the Starry Night musical a couple months ago, and like you I just listened to that one song on repeat for many many hours. I’ll definitely check out the other two! And a smaller musical that you may not have heard of is one called Lizard Boy. It’s got some really great songs, and an interesting, if slightly incomprehensible, storyline. My favorite song from that is A Terrible Ride.
Starry became such an important musical to me so fast. I listened to it last summer and immediately fell in love. The Road was my most listened-to song of the year, and it's a go-to comfort song for me now. I got a tattoo inspired by the lyrics, and I spent hours reading and learning about the van Gogh brothers. I still cry every time Wheat Fields comes on, and I just admire the show so much.
I’m so happy that I recognized all the shows! I’ve seen bits & pieces of Epic & Starry, but never listened to the whole things, so thank you for convincing me to finally get around to it!
When you started talking about starry- the storytelling, emotional descriptions, character expression, and noting your emotions through the whole listening to the soundtrack got me super emotional for like- no reason- anyone else?? Or just me-
That Starry night illustration is just gorgeous - it might be because I'm an artist myself but it really makes me want to check out the musical, even though I'm not much of a musical person in the first place. The art is truly touching and you sound so moved when talking about the song, it can only be great ✨ Thank you for that new discovery !
When you were describing epic the moment you said "Made by one man" or something like that I was like "ITS EPIC ITS EPIC I KNOW THIS ONE!" and woke my cousin up cause I wanted someone to know 😅😆 Edit: I love Zeus is song btw the song where Circe & Odysseus is fighting is amazing💫 too.
Ohmigod! Ohmigod, you guys! If you go to the Starry Musical channel, and you go to their playlists, there's one called Starry and Beyond. Well, on that playlist, at the very end, is this very video! I guess they like your work or something~
Can I just say, though never being a theater kid myself (thanks social anxiety) these videos of yours always bring out the utmost respect I have for the craft? Like, I got the biggest rush of emotion hearing you talk about all of these musicals, especially Starry. The drawing you made for it was just... so so good. The swirls of colors are gorgeous, and that expression made my chest fit to burst. Your art is just so inspiring. I have so much love for your art style (and a slight jealousy in your skill in drawing guys. I need more practice)
I loved listening to you talk about all these shows. One series of musicals that I wish had more attention are the New Albion Trilogy and the Ballad of Lost Hollow Trilogy by Paul Shapera. All the musicals in those trilogies are punk operas and tell a crazy and mysterious history about New Albion. Also, might I add, VERY gay.
I'm definitely checking all of these out! An underrated musical that I would recommend is "We Are The TIgers" it's a murder mystery but it has a very peppy feel most of the time (with the exception of a few songs)
ABD Illustrates I know you probably won’t see this but I wanted to thank you for not only your wonderful and inspiring art but for a year ago introducing me to “Starry”, as a young artist this musical made me cry it is one of the best musicals I have ever listened too and I do love myself a good musical… I have it’s songs playing on repeat in my head and I don’t want to try and get them out, it brings joy and pleasure to my life similarly to how your art does.
A million thanks for introducing Starry because I never would have found it and I just listened to the whole album and I'm just so amazed. A lot of the songs made me teary but The Starry Night just made me bawl my eyes out. And I just love how the way you drew Vincent with such a soulful expression and that he's full of hope. I love everything about your art and the musical 💙💙💙✨✨✨
I've heard about Starry a bit prior to seeing this video, but this is what really compelled me to sit down and listen to it, and BY GOD I'M SO MAD AT MYSELF FOR NOT DISCOVERING IT SOONER IT'S SO GOOD
Legally Blonde was the first musical I ever saw live and is still a favorite of mine to this day. It totally counts as Indie, it may have had a Broadway debut but it did so poorly almost no one knows of its existence. Which is sad because it’s a great show
I've been following you since you were uploading sketchy speedpaints of sanders' sides over copyright-free house music. you've come so far and you never cease to inspire me. thank you!
Yo have you watched/listened to The Grinning Man, it was a small production that slowly grew to fame but then it just died off in public view. It cool and creepy and it based of a story written by Victor Hugo!
I have a challenge for you!!! draw characters that embody either your biggest insecurities (or if that is too personal) some really common insecurities! like acne, chubbiness, skinnyness, scars, eye bags, wrinkles, discoloration, hair textures (like my hair is the worst inbetween of curly and straight, it wont stay in curls but it frizzes and knots just like curly hair, and when wet its HECKA curly but after drying it just gets frumpy), etc. because I'd love to see you show people that those insecurities dont matter and that they are all beautiful
I will always and forever recommend my favorite musical, Scarlet Pimpernel. It's more well known than a couple of the ones you mentioned, but I absolutely adore it. I love every iteration of the story that's been produced, from the original book (written by Baroness Orczy, the OG of masked vigilantes), to the movies that have been made and finally the stage musical. Secret Garden is also a tremendously underappreciated musical. It's a well-known story and it's gotten at least a few different movie adaptations, but I haven't met many people that are aware it's also a musical. The official recorded album even stars Mandy Patinkin, whom you may know as Inigo Montoya from Princess Bride. He's got a magnificent tenor voice, I tell you. I will definitely be listening to some new soundtracks of these shows today! I'm especially excited for Starry, but also to watch a musical being born with Epic sounds super cool. Thank you so much!
How have I not heard of Starry the Musical??? It's Vincent Van Gogh and Starkid mixed into one, my two favourite things. Definitely gonna check it out and probably cry on the way cause I'm a sap
When you talked about brush strokes becoming interwoven I suddenly realized.. I already heard it before! I love the song and never knew it was part of a musical!
Oh hon.... the last one was GORGEOUS 😢 like of course everything you draw is gorgeous but i have a soft place in my heart for van gough and GOD!!! THE COLOURS! HIS EXPRESSION!!! A GIFT!!!!❤❤❤❤
I stopped watching this when you talked about Starry and searched for the musical, and well, I'm mad it took till this for me to find it and I'm in love now. Thank you for showing me this amazing master piece
Theres a musical about Van Gogh??? Oml I have to check that out, I love everything about him and straight up, whenever I do research on him I always end up crying
I thought this story was fitting so here you go: When I was like 10-12 my oldest brother was part of the Les mis production at the local college. He played a small part, one of the school boys, but it's still one of my fondest memories. Everyone was so extra it's a little disappointing to watch the film. And it was especially extra during the big battle. Bodies were flinging left and right, my brother rotated mid-air like a hot dog on one of those gas station hot dog cooker things. It was the most dramatic thing to watch. And that was my introduction to musical theatre.
So I went to go listen to the demos of Epic right after this video, and I genuinely cried. No exaggeration. I was 7 seconds into The Horse and The Infant and I was already in tears. And by god, I understand your love for Your Light omfg it was phenomenal
