It's never confirmed in any of the movies but I always thought that the "witch" who cursed Fiona and was responsible for getting her locked in the tower was the Fairy Godmother herself. She did that so she could then send her son Prince Charming to rescue Fiona

Literally everything about this movie is perfection incarnate! The universe building, Larry King as the Ugly Stepsister, the debut of Puss in Boots and the strong emotional core. The best part will always be Jennifer Saunders singing "Holding Out for a Hero" while the giant Gingerbread Man walks around. One of the greatest climaxes in animation!

Fun fact: They were gonna show that the potion effected Dragon. She was gonna be a Pegasus. A horse with wings.

He was a huge advocate of animal rights so at the end of every show, he’d say “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” Thus, Donkey suggests that Shrek neuter Puss.

In Puss in Boots original fairytale, he kills an ogre by tricking it to change into a mouse I believe, before quickly striking.

My favorite exchange in the entire movie: Shrek: How do ya feel? Donkey: I don't....feel any different. I look any different? Puss In Boots: You still look like an ass to me. Donkey gives Puss a "Boy, shut up" look 😂🤣

Something disturbing I realized with the fairy godmother scene. She is the one who cast the spell on Fiona to make her an ogre. Upon seeing Fiona, she thinks that the spell didn’t work properly. That’s why she’s thrown into shock. That’s why very godmother starts pelting Fiona with make up and fancy dresses to make her look better. And then she brings the furniture to Life, because she planned to keep her locked in that room until the godmother could figure out how to make her look normal.

13:26 - 13:31 I always love how Donkey pointed out Shrek's myopic view of his own misery by pulling the "It's who I am, deal wth it" card. Yes, you can be treated unfairly in life sometimes, but that doesn't remove personal accountability and integrity, especially when there ARE people who accept that there's both good and bad in you. Easily one of the most goated movie sequels, it nails everything a sequel needs to do with expanding the world the first created, and developing characters with sensical writing and intelligence, along with being entertaining and suspenseful, it's just great

The editing is 10/10.

Yeah Puss in this movie is super early in his iteration so he doesn't do as much as his lastest movie that had better animation help sell his skills more compared to his first appearance here.... But if you want to get into why he didn't do much against Shrek in universe wise, besides him realizing Shrek isn't that bad... As much as I love Puss this fits his MO a lot, being like a skilled fighter but getting too cocky or making a single mistake that can lead to a quick defeat. Heck in The Last Wish the main reason he was on his last life was because he kept doing dumb or reckless stuff and getting killed. His fight with the giant at the beginning is also a great example of this too. He did so well against the giant but he had to play to his ego and stay and entertain the crowd one more time, which got him killed.

I forgot how crusty Puss was in this compared to Last Wish

you can see the King take the tea with the love potion in it when him and Fiona are up in the tower looking down at Charming.

Easily the best animated sequel only rivaled by KFP2 One of my favorite parts behind the “Police Brutality!” Part was when before they met Puss in Boots, Shrek actually apologizes for snapping at Donkey

I have seen this movie more time than I can count and I never for once considered if Charming could use magic but honestly that would make a whole lot of sense at least a little

The film was truly ahead of its time

Shrek 2 has some of the greatest things. A fun story on a larger scale, clever pop culture jokes, additional characters (like Puss in Boots and Fair Godmother), great casting, memorable songs that slaps, and an epic climax. These kind of films, let alone sequels are what makes a lot of them from Dreamworks shine brightly!
