this scene is brilliant because Shrek was originally a stab at pop-culture, but now, Shrek has gained enough cultural significance to make sense to be in a story that precedes it by decades.
I’d say you’re looking too much into it except they included the “I am not going out there by myself” line and I feel like the writers couldn’t not be thinking of that at the time
@@Rqblt at first I did think about Will being Will but when you actually know the story and adaptations before this it is obvious that he is talking to them in a way. He is going insane because he watches the same movie over and over again (it is noted because earlier in the movie shrek is on in the background). In the movie the Omega Man there is a element to the character because he goes to the cinema and watches the same movie repeatedly.
I saw Shark Tale. I found it... boring. The only thing I liked about it was Angelina Jolie (because I'm such a fan of hers), but it didn't make me like the movie any better.
This scene is so damn depressing-- watching Shrek after society had dissolved, nearly everyone in the world is dead and there are hordes of zombies out to slaughter me would be pretty morbid.
We all know that Shrek is a symbol of guidence in times hopelessness. Shrek will rise from the ashes and become a way of life, a new religion, a new god.
This scene is sad because he's seen every movie he has multiple times so much that he literally memorized everything. Because it was just him and sam... poor sam
@Ganso de la Secretaria I understand I can elaborate for ya tho. Pretty much all of his family and half of society has been dead or infected. He’s a scientist who has been living in isolation for years with just his dog ( who died in the scene before which is why this scene hits too hard ). You don’t realize how sad it is at first.
@@champagnepettis And what sadder is Neevil had to kill Sam himself due to the dog turning basically saying goodbye to his loyal companion and only family left before being completely alone. I would imagine that he tried to use the movies to cope a bit having Sam with him as well but after a while, it no longer worked I bet you he probably watched every movie he had before the Apocolypse a bunch of times and all those Movies in the store when he went out he must have watched them all at least once.
I'd say how ridiculous it is that something like Shrek made it in to the I Am Legend story, but Shrek kicks ass, and Will Smith is saying Shrek dialogue, so I'm all for it
It has a deeper meaning than that. The part where donkey says "I don't have any friends. And I'm not going out there by myself" represents what he is going through
@@zombislayerpwnsnoobsI always thought it’s because it’s a movie he probably watched with his son and knows the dialogue so well because he watched it so many times because it reminds him of his dead family
@@iconsumeoxygen7473 "But uh...I dont have any friends. And I'm NOT going out there by myself". Its symbolism for the guys loneliness, supported by the fact that he knows the lines of the movie by heart, implying he has probably watched dozens of times since he doesnt have much else to do (notice how the woman and the kid look at him concerned, wondering how long has he been by himself to do that)
I took it as the opposite. They are Shrek and he's donkey, he doesn't know what it's like to be free, and he has no friends. When he mimics, "but uh, I don't have any friends", it's showing the woman in the background, implying he's been so separated from human contact that she's his only chance. Ironically, he sacrifices himself pretty much immediately for them, because they're the only thing he's got left, just like Donkey.
Either that or they were among the 12 million that survived. Pretty sure they got eaten though. Robert Downey Jr is also dead in this universe because in the video store scene, Will Smith's character chooses out the movie Good Night and Good Luck which features RDJ. RIP Iron Man.
I know a lot of people who weren't thriled with this movie, but what a great return of scifi through simplicity! I believe that this movie will stand the test of time precisely because it has such a strong character, and such a subtle yet thrilling and creepy plotline.
This scene is so meta. The scene from Shrek itself parallels the scene that led up to this one in the movie where the woman saved Neville from the vampires.
LemKuuja he's the same kid who played Sam in Charlie St. Cloud. Strangely enough both movies have a character named Sam who dies. But in this movie his name is Ethan.
It was so surreal watching this scene for the first time because I happen to be able to quote this entire scene from Shrek as well. I almost had to pinch myself that this scene was happening. Haha!
This is kinda dark knowing that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are either dead or turned into darkseekers from the krippin virus in this universe.
Sam can be said for the other voice actors and actresses from other Dreamworks movies like Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Marc Maron, Lana Condor and Annie Murphy.
He realized on that scene of "Shrek" that a simple cartoon can symbolize his reality more that ever, and continues by repeating the lines of the movie. In the middle of it's speach he omits part of the script cause it was not relevant to his thought, and finish by making thinking them that it was only madness, coming from what appears to be a man that have been alone for a long time.
Guys, I swear. When I was a little kid, I was watching the movie, and this scene started. However! Shrek literally came out from the TV screen! And Robert wasn't even surprised. Shrek and donkey literally helped Robert to set traps, they were wandering around together and cracking jokes. I definitely remember it's happening perfectly! What the hell is that?
A kid and I back in elementary school used to say the lines from Shrek to each other every day. Me and him knew all the words from the movie from start to finish. Lol I thought me and him were the only ones who did this!
Great scene ever! Eddie Murphy and Will Smith were in DreamWorks Animation films; Murphy was in Shrek while Smith was in Shark Tale. Both of these films were great too.
To me this is kinda a way of him talking to them them guards would be like the night seekers thinking they were all that like when they were about to kill him and then the boy and his mom showed up and they ran like in Shrek and like when donkey says he's not going out there by myself is like will smith telling them he's afraid to go out there alone and donkey not having any friends is like will smith saying that he doesn't have anymore friends because they have died And finally when he says I have a great idea I'll stick with you is like will smith asking them if he can stay with them...either that or he legitimately likes Shrek
These scenes during the day are so creepy to me. The clock is ticking and they aren't even aware of it because Anna didn't wait till dawn to come to the house. Now the Darkseekers know where Robert is. They are out there right now, plotting and getting ready to storm that area
This scene is obviously paying homage from the Omega Man when Heston's character is watching Woodstock in the theater. Now I'm wondering how Charleston Heston would have reacted to this scene.
I never picked up on the fact that they showed the scene where Shrek first met Donkey and since donkey had nothing out there he stuck by Shrek. Great symbolism and only took me 9 years to pick up on it!
You obviously didn't get the point of this scene...it shows Robert Neville is so lonesome that he memorized the lines in the movie perfectly which is also really funny but sad....plus the dialogue between Donkey and Shrek sums up their actual situation....this scene is all sorts of clever writing and acting.
When I first saw this while watching the full movie, I was totally trippin' because I can actually recite this entire scene off by heart all the way up to where Donkey says, 'I'm makin' waffles!' It was like the movie suddenly became a documentary of my life... spooky!
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but this short scene of Will quoting Shrek says a lot in under two minutes. It shows that he hasn’t spoken to another person in a long time, and doesn’t know how to communicate as well as he used to, social skills are amiss. Who quotes the movie while it’s on right? But the scene in Shrek aligns with the scenario, he wants to stay with someone. “I don’t have any friends”. Not to mention he’s definitely seen the movie way too many times.
As a Dreamworks animation fan who watched "I am Legend" can I say that the other Dreamworks voice actors like Sam Rockwell, (Mr. Wolf) Anthony Ramos, (Mr. Pirahna) Craig Robinson, (Mr. Shark) Marc Maron, (Mr. Snake) Awkwafina, (Mrs. Tarantula) Zazie Beetz, (Diane Foxington) Lana Condor, (Ruby Gillman) Annie Murphy, (Nerissa/Chelsea Vandersea) Toni Collette, (Agatha Gillman) and Jane Fonda (Grandmamah) became Dark Seekers in the "I am legend" universe? That would mean we would never get such movies like "How to train your Dragon, The Croods, The Bad Guys and yes.... Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken."
One of my favorite scenes. His reaction and display of emotion after not having had human contact except for the infected and mannequins was raw. Saw them both, though I don't remember many details from the Charlton Heston version, I do remember it was darker like a sci-fi film noir. It was quite creepy. I imagine they accomplished the same thing with the shadow and dark effects of film noir that they did with special effects in the remake.
Me watching this when I was little: HEY ITS SHREK me watching now: damn that's Shrek must've been his favorite movie. He probably would watch that when he felt lonely
