Yes Jen, the trick is to tame the dragon and then ride it… Donkey has that well in hand 😏 Re. the animation. Shrek came out about 6 years after Toy Story, which had been the first full-length CG animated feature, so it wasn’t exactly groundbreaking in that sense. It did kind of break Pixar’s monopoly on big box-office success for CG animated movies, though, and it did make some pretty big technical advances in realistic vegetation and terrain (all the grass blades, trees, leaves etc) and fluid animation. The close-up shot of the milk being poured was pretty advanced for its day, and so was all the fire that the dragon breathed. Shrek 2 is DEFINITELY worth your time!

I don't think anyone would deny how much of an absolute blast this movie is. The voice cast are all excellent, the animation (At least at the time was gorgeous) and I love the original score. Such a classic! 🔥 Apparently Mike Myers orginally didnt do a Scottish accent for Shrek, but last minute he asked Spielberg (who was producing) if he could redo the whole film in a Scottish accent...Great choice if thats true. 👌

Many people nowadays think the animation looks dated. But they do not realize the look of the movie matches many of the classic 1950 & 1960's illustrated children's books that had that exact look. What they see as "dated" is actually artistic style.

Yes, it was groundbreaking at the time and still holds up today, but the same can be said for Toy Story, which was 6 years prior. The main "groundbreaking" part of Shrek was it showed that someone other than Pixar could do it right.

Shrek is probably in my top 5 movies of all time. It came out right around my 10th birthday. I saw it twice in theaters and it's still one of my favorite movies. It's a beautiful love story and story about how everyone deserves friendship and love. It's a story about love coming from unexpected places. And it's a story about how the best relationships are ones built on mutual interests.
@md_vandenberg
@md_vandenberg 16 дней назад
How groundbreaking was the tech in Shrek: Toy Story was the first feature length CGI film and was released in 1995. Shrek released 6 years later. These movies are a world apart as far as detail, textures and lighting are concerned. Dreamworks gave Disney/Pixar something to be scared of. Fun fact, per Cameron Diaz's request in her contract, video of her in the studio is not allowed to be released to the public. This is a shame because the tiny bit of footage shown in a behind the scenes feature is one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

I'm so glad you liked this one Jen, this movie has a special place in my heart, when I was in 6th grade I started at a new school and was having a tough time adjusting and we went on a field trip to see this movie in the theater, it was awesome. Here's some fun trivia, Chris Farley was supposed to voice Shrek originally, unfortunately he passed away very early into production, there's some storyboards with Farley's voicework, it's so interesting to wonder what could have been, even though Mike Meyers as Shrek is absolutely iconic, like Austin Powers and Wayne. As I've said before, you are one of my reactors Jen, I love your personality and commentary, and how much you love/appreciate music in films.

Shrek was a very noticeable mile stone for CGI at the time, what they did with the tech at the time, was for this guy who was into and dabbling in CGI as a hobby, off the charts... not to mention the movie was quite a departure from the typical animated movie in terms of story and structure (the use of pop culture music was new) and while movies like Toy Story where first in doing the songs in an animated movie that weren't sung by one of the characters, Shrek took that a step further. The sequel also pushed CGI forward as well (the trees in a few scenes are 'WTF thats good' that at the time when seeing them my mouth literally fell open), Pixar was the big one for pushing the envelope typically in teh 90s and 00s but Dreamworks was at the time also no slouch either... it was around the time of the third Shrek movie that CGI kinda slowed down, which was the same year Ratatouille came out which is still in my opinion the pinnacle of animated CGI.

I felt the whole traditional Disney-driven fairy tale animation scene was jaded by the 90s, then this came out and breathed new life into the genre! ❤ Hilarious all the way through, heartwarming and with messages about love, friendship and self-acceptance that flowed from the narrative (without beating us over the head). I'd imaging a traditional Disney princess would have kept the 3 eggs and raised the chicks, but Fiona was far more practical 😂

Funny where it has to be, heartwarming where it has to be, heart BREAKING where it has to be, it even had its wrestling scene evaluated by multi-time WWE tag champ Shelton Benjamin... and this movie is the reason why "I'm a Believer" is the song that has made Neil Diamond the most money. (He wrote it first for the Monkees, I believe, definitely recorded it himself, but I also have a soft spot for the Smash Mouth version too...)

Shrek's lines were originally recorded in Mike Myers Canadian voice, but it seemed off. After discussing it with the director and giving him examples, they redid the entire movie in a Scottish accent. Myers did it for free because it would make the character and movie so much better. You missed it, but mama bear went missing and you see her later dead as a rug when Lord F is looking at his princess over and over while in his bed.

"Blue flower, red thorns. Blue flower, red thorns..." That got reused in Batman Begins.

This movie was so damn good. Definitely holds up. If you haven't seen it, DreamWorks also made Prince of Egypt, which is a fantastic version of the story of Moses. And the music absolutely slaps.

I truly appreciate dragons too, so if you want to watch a really good "Dragon" movie then I would highly suggest "Dragonheart", which is an emotional period drama with multiple funny bits as well! "Damsel" is another dragon movie which I recently saw on NF and was pleasantly surprised by, which bears an interesting twist to the "Dragon and Damsel" trope that I thought was rather overdue in the genre! Yet another far less known one is the foreign film titled "I Am Dragon", which like "Damsel" provides still another fairy-tale like version of the "Dragon and Damsel/Princess" plot that I found just as powerful too. The DVD copy I have is originally in the Russian language, but it has English dubbing/subtitles so that I could enjoy it! In that same category, the "How to Train Your Dragon" animated films are also incredible too (if you haven't watched them; I can't remember if you have or not on your channel), of course!

This was very impressive cg at its time. And although it is dated by modern standards, in particular with some of the models, its strong artistic vision makes it still very attractive today. The character animation still holds up great.

One of the directors, Andrew Adamson, also directed the first of the Chronicles of Narnia movies, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

I always felt bad for the dragon, so I'm glad she got to come back as part of the team. If you're looking for more movie dragons, a personal favorite of mine is Dragonslayer from the early 80s. This was great fun and a thumbs up for Shrek 2!

So Jen, I heard you wanted to watch more movies with dragons in them... Well, here's a quick list for you! The How To Train Your Dragon movies All three are excellent, and I hear there's a fourth one coming. DragonHeart - Starring James Bond (Sean Connery)! Eragon - Haven't seen it myself yet, but I keep hearing it's pretty good. Dragonslayer - Not too well-known, but a personal, nostalgic favorite of mine. The Neverending Story - Ask anyone who's seen it, and chances are they love the dragon in it. The Dragon Prince - Not a movie, but a series with two seasons and a third on the way; it is also excellent, and it's a shame how few people have watched it, but those who have, love it! Mulan -A great Disney flick, and Eddie Murphy is the voice of the dragon! Quest For Camelot - Another underrated animated film. Pete's Dragon - There is the original and the remake; both from Disney and both are good, but nostalgia demands that I give the original a slight edge. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Not completely about just a dragon, but a really great fantasy film. Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings - Same description as above, but with an Asian twist, and set In the Marvel Universe!
