Shriekback just never stop giving such awesome innovative tunes. I used to play this with My Spine is the Bass line at the Hippo Club in Nottingham back to back which went down really special. Some acts just come along and press all the right buttons .Blessings
One of my favorite songs from the 80s. Still have the original vinyl. Love the groovy side of Shriekback. Funny how I really had no idea what this song was about in my teens. Now that I’m all grown up, this song means even more to me. Long live Shriekback!!!!
WRONG. KROQ 106.7 PASADENA IS ACKNOWLEDGED AS THE PREMIER RADIO STATION IN THE 80S AND IN THE NATION. CASE IN POINT THEY WERE THE FIRST STATION TO PLAY SHRIEKBACK. ....AND KRAFTWERK AND JOY DIVISION AND KATE BUSH ETC ETC
I sure wish Shreikback would follow all the likes on you tube and see how much of a demand there is for re-releases their Warner Brothers recordings - actually all of their labels including Island.
A lot of the earlier shriekback stuff has in fact been given recent re-releases by the band. But they were all limited run offerings, and sold out quickly. The masters for “Jam Science” were unavailable to the band, for whatever reason, so a transfer from the most flawless vinyl proccurable was done instead.
I hadn't either, perhaps not since the radio was playing it around 1984,but I still remembered that chorus in particular before playing it on RU-vid. It does sound a little mellower here than I remembered.
Come to think of it regarding music from a more recent era,a friend of mine had at least a couple of the Dandy Warhols' albums, and one or two of their jams had grooves reminiscent of this.
To the comments saying that they are underrated.... They are Not so much underrated, as they are far too (good/sophisticated/advanced) Far above most peoples "taste" .....
thanks for posting, it has been a long time since I have heard this song. I remember this song being played in the clubs and dancing away to it....those were the days
Love this song, their music is very sexy to me, the sinewy funky bass lines, the ethereal synths, but not in a vulgar obvious way like a lot of the junk out there nowdays.
for people looking for this track, i went into several of the used record stores in town and found a ton of copies of this. venture out to your local record store and you might find it too.
First time iheard this and damced to itwas at Dillions in Westwood. .three floors of different music rock,on 2ndfloor,popon 3rffkoor snd slternatove on the fourth floor . You had yo get past tony yhe doorman snd the elevator with a bong im the emergency phone box. Friggin 80s
@mysticliar Carl Marsh was so great. I can listen to Jam Science over and over agin. Never mind Tench and Care...JS was awsome. Too bad he left just before Oil and Gold was produced.
We had back '84 and would play it at 33 1/3 rpm (supposed to play at 45). At first it was on accident, but then on purpose, because it was dark and spooky slowed down. I hardly recognize it now at the correct speed.
@mysticliar I agree with you. I think the original marsh/andrew/barker Shriekback is tremendous. Barry did some good stuff on his own after but the original lineup is my favorite.
Bummed I never got to see them live. My one chance was in Milwaukee 1985 when they toured the states as opener for Simple Minds. The drummer broke his hand the night before in Chicago so they cancelled. We were going to see them then leave as we weren't into Simple Minds. Nevertheless went to the show and Simple Minds was pretty good.
I heard they were touring the UK and were just on the verge of doing a leg of US shows right before the pandemic hit. Hopefully they still do it. I have also been waiting 35 years to see them live.
I have this version on 12" vinyl & CD. Groovediggeroo's correct. There are other remixes that are a little different. This is the best one for sure. There are several greatest hits compilations that include it, but only one has or had this particular mix (I believe). I remember it being a pain trying to find it on CD way back when. I added it to my itunes play list directly from the CD.If there's a way to make a copy from the CD & email it, let me know and I'll send it to you.
"The closest they came to a hit single (No.54)." What about "Gunning for the Buddha"? This is the 12" mix; there was also a square pic disc release. rateyourmusic.com/release/single/shriekback/hand-on-my-heart-nerve/ ~ Check out Gag-bit Vinyl in Bushwick Nyc for early 80’s post-punk/new wave/synthpop gems. ~ :-D
the version here is from the 12" single .... you can find used vinyl copies for sale on websites like gemm or discogs (make sure you get the one with the exact cover art that appears in this video, there were other remixes released that sound different) ... there is no legal digital download available to my knowledge
No Shriekback album prior to 1985’s “Oil & Gold” can be found as a download, on any legal platform, except for jam science, which recieved an expanded version, on both limited CD, and a download avilable exclusively through Shriekback.com.
The 12" single is what I had, and it was made to play at 45 rpm. We would forget to switch the the turntable from 33 1/3 and accidentally play it at the slower speed, and that is how I remember the song. It was dark and spooky slowed down.

What about those days we break up the alphabet AN ANCIENT RIP OFF BONES BENEATH THE FLESH is how I heard it and is in fact an improvement on the official lyrics if there are any ...
There's a very good website called lavamus(dot)com...I checked already, they have quite a few shriekback works including jam science. I've used this site loads its very cheap, 50 dollars gets you a rate where each track is 11 cents each...plus you get 20 tracks free....520 tracks! The quality and choice is excellent ( over 4 million mp3 tracks...I shit you not!) average file size from 6 to 10 MB and all in at least 192 compression bit rate. I do not work for them!
