Love your crabbing and trawling vidos. I understand the concept of trawling and basically how it works in all your videos I never see the doors to your net could you make one and show that? Also does a person need a special license to trawl for shrimp and is it recreational or commercial an is there a bag limit?
@ericcope8216
@ericcope8216 3 года назад
Great video guys. That's a great haul for sure. I'm still undecided on how I feel about the by catch. The lady's comment about being MacDonald's and that the dolphins would be eating these by catch fish anyway is correct. I feel like it would be better if the dolphins were catching their own rather than being "fed" . I appreciate netting the shrimp for food, I've been harvesting my own food for many years. Not sure if I will purchase a net to do the same. I don't agree with most methods regarding commercial harvesting. I realize it's a way to make a living for many people. I saw many juvenile fish including sharks being released in bad shape. I'm not a tree hugging liberal by any means, trust me. Just my thoughts, not judging.
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections 3 года назад
I agree, there's a lot of by catch. We never like when we're seeing a lot of it in our trawl net but it's just the easiest method that we've found for catching shrimp and filling our freezer. We do try to save as much of the by catch as we can to use in our crab traps. Just our way of trying not to be wasteful. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Being from South Louisiana why don't you guys use a picking box to dump the bag and sort the shrimp?
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections 3 года назад
Great question because using a picking box would definitely make sorting our catch a lot easier. The reason we're not using one is because we're so limited on space in our 17' boat. It gets very tight when we have all our gear aboard. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

Depending on your depth if less than 8’-10’…you will catch ‘more’ when NOT keeping your ‘wheel/prop’ wash in between your ropes…slight turn more successful! Bigger engines not recipe for larger trawls…light shallow draft boats tend to ‘slide/skid’…especially flat bottom boats: BIG misconception-reason(s) hard to make turns!!!!!!!!!!!! Learned info from 53 years of shrimping here in Louisiana (from recreational to 48 yrs. commercial shrimper…)! Good luck…👍🏻🍤👍🏻

Funny; Looks like they catch as many shrimp with THIS boat (using less fuel) then the "Parker" with a larger net. Dollar for dollar, looks like THIS is the way to go... especially with a smaller crew of people.
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections Год назад
I can't complain about the amount of shrimp we caught using this smaller boat powered by the Yamaha 90 4 stroke pulling our 25' net. The Parker's 5.7 Mercruiser pulls the bigger 40' net just as cheap as this one. It doesn't need to turn as many rpms to pull the net. It was hard for me to believe it was burning around the same amount of fuel. The Parker sucks down way more fuel on plane than this one. It only gets around 2 mpg on plane, and this 17' Sea Hunt gets around 5.5 mpg. The 25' Parker is three times as heavy as the 17" Sea Hunt. .

@SaltyReflections

LOL. Yes, you're working hard. Drop your pull ropes with a 10 lb anchor with rope and a bouy attached to it. Then go around to your tail bag. You need a rope and bouy attached to the front of your tail bag. They will pull behind your net as you pull. They also give you a rope to pull on if you hang your net on something on the bottom. The system works great. You'll need 2 ropes around 20 ft, 2 bouys, and 1 anchor. Happy shrimping, man. Enjoy.

I just started shrimping here in Georgia, I love the videos. I am wondering where are you placing your bowies on your net. I have a 25ft net. Where how many bowies do I need and where would you suggest I place them? I don't have the sea turtle escape shoot. My net does have 2 sets of rings. When you pull your tail up are you disconnecting the net from the boat? I anticipate going out on my own so what would you suggest to easiest way to get the doors out correctly? Thank you for taking the time to help me out.

😁 Thank you! Of course, we love the dolphin! 💙🐬 They are sooo smart! They follow the many shrimp boats that work this area constantly! We eat A LOT of shrimp, one of both of our favorite foods! 🦐🍤🍽 (Had 🍤 for supper tonight actually 😋) But when we have more than we will need, we do sell the rest! We mostly just give great deals to our neighbors in our neighborhood! 😉 We don't shrimp for a living though. We just love activities that get us out on the water & shrimping is a lot of fun at times! Lots of work too though! 💪😓🥴 But we enjoy it! This was the most we had ever caught in a day! Thanks so much for coming along on this shrimping trip with us! 💙🦐🍤🌊

It's actually what we are doing this very moment! 😁 No joke, right now! 🤪🤗 & we are actually catching a decent amount today (not quite as good as this day from this video though 😲🤩👊), unlike yesterday when we didn't catch any - 🚫👎 nothing but jellies 🦑🥴🐙🙄😖! But it goes that way sometimes, right ✅️ 🤷🏼‍♀️ & the good Lord 🙏🙌 allowed us to wake up at 5 am this morning & try it again! So we are blessed! Thanks for watching & supporting from New Orleans. 🦐💙🌊🐬

I'm in between Charleston and Myrtle Beach. I'm not a RU-vidr but I'm am very interested because my whole family loves seafood and I would love to do it myself because Georgetown, SC never have the seafood because they runs out so fast. So to keep the family happy, I want to get out there and do it for us lol.

I'm looking forward to the 2023 SC shrimp trawling season to come in. I hope we wreck them this year. 😆 We're going to be using our 25' Parker pilot house pulling a 42-foot trawl net this year. This boat is a lot more spacious and will allow us to take family and friends along. I hope we have some big pulls but most importantly I'm hoping for good memories with others. Stay safe and take care!

Just out of curiosity, when you dump the net in the basket, why don't you cull out The Bait fish first being there is not as many of them as there are shrimp, I noticed they were picking the shrimp out first and going around the fish, just seems like once the fish are gone, it's all shrimp from there baby. Anyways I was just wondering that I enjoyed the video and I will have to watch some more of these that is one beautiful sunset in South Carolina. Peace out.
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections 2 года назад
We keep some of the small trash fish for crabbing. It makes sorting harder, but we try to use what we can. We try to get the fish we can't keep out asap. And we're culling out bait shrimp.

What a beautiful day. This is so exciting going on these trips. I'm from the hills of Tennessee. You have beautiful seagulls, we got buzzards. Just wondering, were you raised here, how did you learn to do all these things? What do you do with all these srimp? Thank you for taking the time to show us this video!🤗
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections 2 года назад
LOL! We have buzzards too. I am a jack of all trades master of none. LOL! We have learned all types of things by listening to others and getting out putting in effort. We're just showing you all the things we truly love, if we didn't, we'd quit. We eat a lot of the shrimp we catch and use it for bait. We also sell some because we love trawling, and we definitely can't eat all we catch. Sometimes we catch enough shrimp to last us a year in one day. Thanks for watching in Tennessee!
@congsan3528
@congsan3528 2 года назад
What is the limit? In Texas, they're only allowed 15lb of shrimp per person.
@SaltyReflections
@SaltyReflections 2 года назад
In SC, in order to drag a trawl net like we are doing in this video, SCDNR requires a commercial license. There is no size or catch limit. As far as recreational shrimping in SC, it's very common here to "bait" shrimp as well as "deep hole" shrimp. As far as I am aware, there is limit of 48 quarts heads on (or 28 quarts heads off) for recreational shrimping. Thanks for the Texas info. 👍 & Thanks for watching! 🦐🍤🦐
