In today's episode, I run a little fishing experiment at the Intracoastal Waterway to find out which saltwater bait is more effective for Multi-Species Fishing: SQUID, or SHRIMP.
This video is Episode 2 of my 2020 December Florida Fishing Trip.
[December 11th, 2020 (Fishing Session Number 82)]

Did you know that...?
🦑...There are over 300 species of squid swimming in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans alone?! Out of all those species, three species usually make it to the tackle shops: (1) The Opalescent Inshore Squid, a.k.a. California Market Squid (Doryteuthis opalescens), found in the Pacific Ocean -- from Alaska to Southern California; (2) The Northern Shortfin Squid (Illex illecebrosus), found in the Atlantic Ocean, from off the coast of eastern North America to Greenland, Iceland, and west of Ireland and the UK; and (3) The Argentine Shortfin Squid (Illex argentinus), found in the South Western Atlantic Ocean. If you have ever used squid as a bait in the USA, chances are that you have used one of those species as bait! Cool, huh?
🦐...When it comes to frozen Shrimp for bait, there are three species that are harvested in the USA: (1) the White Shrimp (Penaeus setiferus), (2) the Pink Shrimp (Penaeus duorarum), and (3) the Brown Shrimp (Penaeus aztecus). Although, many bait companies in the USA use imported shrimp for bait as well. Therefore, it is hard to pinpoint what species of shrimp you will be using when you buy that frozen bait out there.
🐡...Different species of fish prefer different types of bait. As an example, the Parrotfish (Sparisoma spp.) down in Florida tend to prefer Shrimp over Squid. Some folks say that the Cobia (Rachycentron canadum), especially when young, prefers Squid over a variety of other organic baits. The bottomline is: always make sure to carry different baits with you, so that you can maximize your chances of catching and landing different species of fish!
