SHRIMP VS SQUID!!! Which One is Better?!

In today's episode, I run a little fishing experiment at the Intracoastal Waterway to find out which saltwater bait is more effective for Multi-Species Fishing: SQUID, or SHRIMP.
This video is Episode 2 of my 2020 December Florida Fishing Trip.
[December 11th, 2020 (Fishing Session Number 82)]
Read more about it below:
Did you know that...?
🦑...There are over 300 species of squid swimming in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans alone?! Out of all those species, three species usually make it to the tackle shops: (1) The Opalescent Inshore Squid, a.k.a. California Market Squid (Doryteuthis opalescens), found in the Pacific Ocean -- from Alaska to Southern California; (2) The Northern Shortfin Squid (Illex illecebrosus), found in the Atlantic Ocean, from off the coast of eastern North America to Greenland, Iceland, and west of Ireland and the UK; and (3) The Argentine Shortfin Squid (Illex argentinus), found in the South Western Atlantic Ocean. If you have ever used squid as a bait in the USA, chances are that you have used one of those species as bait! Cool, huh?
🦐...When it comes to frozen Shrimp for bait, there are three species that are harvested in the USA: (1) the White Shrimp (Penaeus setiferus), (2) the Pink Shrimp (Penaeus duorarum), and (3) the Brown Shrimp (Penaeus aztecus). Although, many bait companies in the USA use imported shrimp for bait as well. Therefore, it is hard to pinpoint what species of shrimp you will be using when you buy that frozen bait out there.
🐡...Different species of fish prefer different types of bait. As an example, the Parrotfish (Sparisoma spp.) down in Florida tend to prefer Shrimp over Squid. Some folks say that the Cobia (Rachycentron canadum), especially when young, prefers Squid over a variety of other organic baits. The bottomline is: always make sure to carry different baits with you, so that you can maximize your chances of catching and landing different species of fish!

That very last fish is a tad different than what you labeled. That is more than likely a Southern (Menticirrhus americanus) or Gulf Kingfish (Menticirrhus littoralis). They're basically the same fish, but down here we call them (as a blanket term) Whiting. Judging by the copper coloration I'm leaning more towards americanus. Tight lines, my man!

What about species variation with depth? Would a float with a drop catch different fish than those on the bottom? And by the look of that grunt's tail there are predators out their, maybe throw a lure while the bait soaks?

I have tried both things, Douglas. Just that they didn't really work out that well. Folks on my Inner Circle SnapChat followed the entire fishing sessions -- including different techniques, locations, etc. :) I tend to try an arsenal of different things at different fishing spots. Sadly, all you folks get to see is 27 minutes of the entire thing. Hehe.

My bet is on Shrimp, though Squid tends to stay on the hook better. So in some cases, like with a pinfish nightmare swarm, something tough will do the trick to hook up on the fishy. But shrimp just rocks in other circumstances.

For me it’s what bait is around. Here in Rhode Island we don’t get shrimp but we get a lot of squid in the spring and fall so I use that to catch mostly everything. Squid stick to the hook better and fish don’t steal it off the hook that easily

Merry Christmas Leo. Best wishes and great success to you for 2021. Shrimp vs Squid ...... from my experience in the Indian Ocean ...... if fishing offshore (deep water), squid is the stuff. Shore fishing favors shrimp. Estuary fishing ...... mixed as it depends how far up the estuary you are, the further up, shrimp, closer to the mouth, squid. I also think season plays a role ... match the hatch.

Yes, they do, Adrian. And they are certainly better than J-hooks when it comes to the fish's healthy and safety. The reason why I use a lot of J-hooks is "price per quantity." I normally fish in the North Gulf but I would like to drop an opinion here as well as add cut fish as bait. I have found only a slight difference in the type of species caught IF using pieces of shrimp rather than live shrimp. Assuming everything is dead and using similar sizes, I have found that squid last longer and through multiple strikes while shrimp is more easily picked off. Deeper water fish seem to prefer squid while shallow water fish tend to prefer shrimp. The big difference between the two is the size of bait. The bigger the bait the bigger the catch. A large 8 inch squid will catch far more bigger fish than a finger sized shrimp. Again, if shrimp are not being used alive. Cut fish for bait does depend on the species being used I have noticed, also the way the bait is cut. If just a chunk bait, it stays on the hook better than shrimp, about equal with squid, I do find that chunk fish also tends to catch larger fish than shrimp but you do get less hits. The are where fishing makes a difference as well, whether over grass, sand or rock. To tally all up and I had to pick ONE bait, I would choose the squid.
@sciguyjeff
@sciguyjeff 3 года назад
i love your show because you are showing more species that the standard "fishing shows". I am visiting cape coral this summer to fish but also to do some collecting for my aquarium, Did you happen to do any of the small fish ID for the area, as in too small to use hook and line for? Be interesting for you to scarf up some sargasso and see what you find. I live down there when I was like 5 and have fond memories of getting sargasso and finding the occasional sea horse and such.
