Quick and Dirty food preps for an emergency. How to stretch food and get multiple meals for possible multiple people on the cheap. How to survive on a budget. Different foods to buy for prepping or SHTF/WROL.
Just wanted to show a little bit of what I have been doing lately to survive and how I'm trying to put some food into storage on a limited budget for an emergency, SHTF or WROL type of situation. Everyone should have food stored for an emergency. Especially now with all of the issue that are facing our country!
I hope maybe one person will find something useful in this video.
Best prep food tip I can give from this video is to buy the smallest type of pasta, rice or beans as you can because they will cook faster without using too much fuel or heat AND to buy things like bouillon and dried spices to make your survival a little more pleasant.

+MyBigThing2010 YOu got to buy things from the farmer they grow in the field. Pasta and all that processed stuff is no good. Go buy a bunch of corn and limas, potatoes, tomatoes and onions and can 200 quart jars of that stuff and only have to fnts in a jr an it's goo food. because you can can stuff and it will lst a long time. I get perch and rock fish from out local waters when they are small an can them. You got to watch out for that tuna it's full of mercury and radiation from the Pacific Ocean.

+Brad Cordrey this vid was to lay out n example to people to outline some budget preps that can store n stretch food on the cheap. obviously its not a garden salad. dry goods are cheap n easy for ppl to pick up n put back for a rainy day. this vid is just a tiny example of what can be done. everyone preps the way they want n this is not all i do. again...it was a vid to outline cheap dry goods that can help people get ideas of what to do to get going n not have a cost excuse. also dry goods r lightweight n u can typically carry WAY more dry goods in your car or on your back n they r typically smaller to store for ppl with limited space. this is by far not a complete example but if someone did buy just what was in the vid then it might be enough to help out someone if. they had an emergency to deal with. i can tell u that your comments should n is implemented in. prep systems but itll be a cold day in hell i throw a bunch of liquid filled, heavy glass jars in my pack or on my back n head out....just saying. again just an example of what can be done on a budget n not an all inclusive "Bible" of "prepping" ....there's only so much someone can fit in a ten min vid that i didnt even plan on filming until it actually was filmed...thus vid was "off the cuff" right when i got home from the store so yeah...there's plenty that was not included here but i think i did a decent job with the vid considering the point i was trying to make with it. thanks for watching n your comment! best wishes. MBT

Honestly, with even $100 dollars alone, you can have a basic emergency food set-up for you and your family, and build off of that throughout time. Every trip you go to the grocery store, buy a few extra items, and make that a routine, and watch your cache will build up in no time, and you will have a respectable amount of goods to rely on.

Andy Flores I agree! ...one of the reasons why I made the video...to take some of the overwhelming-ness out of it for new and/or budget conscience people that have nothing stored right now

That's what I do, buy a couple extra cans every time I go to the store. Instead of two, buy 4, things such as chili, corned beef, spaghetti and meatballs, ravioli, beefaroni, pasta, mac and cheese, cans of tomatoes, I used to make mac and cheese and put tomatoes in it, add a topping and your good to go.

@@afakespace Does she realize that beans come in cans, fruits and vegetables also. The canned vegetables are probably more healthier since they are canned immediately and don't go through the whole transportation process and sit in some warehouse for how long.

Favorite soup when I was homeless was 1 bag ramen, crushed and the packet into my pot. 1 can V. sausages cut up & the liquid. about 2 tbs dried veggies, 1tbs dried onion, 1 tbs mashed potato flakes and (opt 1 tbs dried refried beans). Add water to cover and cook on low until veggies are rehydrated and pasta is done. Fills one person or with a side salad and a piece of bread each, two.

You might want to use your favorite search engine to check out "Scotch Broth" It uses a combination of "Rice, Pearl Barley, Red Kidney Beans, Lentils, Split Peas and Garbonzo Beans and makes a VERY good staple food that provides most of what you need for healthy servival at a relatively low cost. I eat a lot of it now and have done well on it with some added protein and B vitamins. You might learn to make Essene Bread (make from Sprouts and possible to bake in a sunny window sill or on a flat rock). Pemmican was a Native American staple food combination and both them and the Moutain Men considered it a great treat when honey was spread on it. Cornell Bread (a bread recipe developed by Cornell University) can also be a wonderful staple food and a variation of that can be made with a wood fire easily enough. There is a lot of choices that can be made that give a nice variety AND good health at the same time, but this was a nice video that got me thinking...... Good job !!!

RE: Rice. Rice by itself has carbs (varied by brand and processing) but, is low on protein, vitamins, and especially minerals. It does contain 1/2 the ingredients for protein. However certain beans have the other half of the chemical source for protein and contain many minerals too. These being canned Lima beans, black-eyed peas and sweet peas. When combining beans with rice, your body will create the proteins you need from the chemicals in the foods. Also dried soy protein will stretch your food stocks. Obtain vitamin and mineral supplement tablets and use as necessary. This will prevent illness. Use zinc + vitamin C to ward off a cold or flu.

Great video. Here are a few things you didn't have. 1. Cooked and cooled mushy beans and rice that have the consistency of modelling clay can be seasoned and fried in grease as hamburger substitute or to stretch the meat. Cooked oats work as well. When the bean burgers sit on a bun with onion, catsup and mustard they are quite good. 2. All pasta can be cooked as follows, put amount needed of dry pasta in a heat proof bowl. I use a big plastic one with a lid. Cover with rapidly boiling water. Cover the bowl with the lid. Wait 20 minutes and eat. Should be al dente. Finally your lack of vegetables could catch up with you so please consider stocking vitamins. The world is gonna need every able bodied person to help in a a HTC scenario. I'm disabled and won't survive long in spite of my extensive nursing skills. I'm relying on the survivors to help my loved ones as I will help theirs as long as I am able. Thanks.

I know this coast a little more. but when I get coupons for spam. ( or goes on sale) I buy the bacon spam. that stuff is off the chain. I soak my rice(cooks faster) stir fry with the spam. also hot dog chilli is cheap. we mix with cheese (we buy the cheese in the jar) put over rice. I cook with my preps twice a week. this way I know what is good, easy, and cheap.

My wife, being from the Philippines, exists on rice ! Nice examples to which I adhere too. She(the wife)has 100 lbs of rice on hand at all times and she loves spam so no disagreement there. In my BOB (which is more of a Get Home Bag} because home is where I have most of my supplies, ammo, and necessities ......I carry slim jims, protein bars and 3 days supply of emergency rations (the wife has a bag of her own with those same rations). Both the wife and I carry our CCW weapons with commercial 9mm ammo (Brass Max is good ammo) and at home I have 10k rounds of reloaded 9mm and another 15k of other calibers. . Our house is at the crest of a hill with a fairly good field of fire, with a generator and we are on well water so home is where I want to be.

The canned veg is not to bad nutrition wise so long as u keep an eye on sodium content. Mix it up with variety and u can get most of the essential micronutrients( meaning miligram amounts). Toss a multivitamin for everyone in the morning and nutritionaly not to bad.

Cool video. Regarding the brown rice... It doesn't last as long as the other rice due to the higher oil content. I eat a lot of this. I usually have at least 4 bags on hand. I keep all but the open bag in the freezer to extend the shelf life. I boil mine in a rice cooker because it's easy. Before I got the rice cooker I was using a trangia cookset on my counter. I usually mix in a little olive oil, salt pepper and garlic and a couple of teaspoons of curry powder. It's great. Another thing that I do from time to time for camping is to brown some 90% lean ground beef and dehydrate it. Add a couple of handfuls of the gravel-like beef to your pasta water for the Mac/cheese.... Add the pasta when the water boils and boil it for however long to cook the pasta... Drain the pasta and beef and add the cheese. That's pretty good. Stir in a can of peas too. Even better.

I can attest to the dried potatos. My family had a small rough patch a while back, and we decided to do some bulk shopping to save money in the long run. So we end up buying one of those huge like 5 or 10 lb bag if insta spud, that stuff lasted a family of 4 for roughly 6-8 months maybe longer. That sack plus the 1 or 2 lbs of rice ever other week made up the startch of like 50 % of our meals during that time period. so a definite prep for me when i moved out on my own, one large pack lasted me for 4 meals worth, plus canned veg.

I also suggest bullion cubes both chicken and beef, lots of spices, pepper, tariaki sauce, Worcester sauce dried fruit like raisins, dates and figs, vitamins, evaporated canned milk. Of course I could go on but these are examples of CHEAP Wholesome foods that have many ways to be combined and or added to whatever you can scrounge post SHFT to make a varied and interestingly healthy diet.

Great vid. Most of my food and medical preps came from either Wally World or Dollar Tree. Those Knorr(and even house brand versions) are great. $1 and it's pretty much a meal in a pouch. Anything made by Hormel is guaranteed to be good after the exp. date. The company says it can be good indefinitely. Wolf brand chili is decent, usually $1 on sale, and has more calories and nutrition than the Hormel chili does. A lot of the 'Great Value' brand is decent, cheap, and most likely made by the same companies that make the name brand stuff. You have to experiment a bit though. Some of it is not so good. Also, I never buy anything for my food storage that absolutely requires milk. Bullion and spices(garlic and onion powder, salt, black pepper, and whatever else you like) are all good and cheap ways to add flavor. Check the medical aisle at the dollar store. Gauze is gauze no matter the name brand says. Tape, masks, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, anti-diarrheals, Benadryl, ace wraps, alcohol, peroxide. Most meds are still good for years after the exp. dates(my mom's a pharmacist, so I asked). All the same stuff, just cheaper.

Ok. I have a few tips, but the one I discovered will give you 4 times the protein for your buck. You have heard, store BEANS bullets and bandaids for when SHFT. Well there is a food that cost less than half the price of Beans but packs over twice the crude protein... Plan old dry yellow split peas! I bought a 10lb bag for $5 when navy beans etc. were $13. You can make peas pudding, pea soups, and a few other pea options. Stores like beans. So when trying to make that SHFT $ stretch buy Yellow Split Peas, white Long Grain Rice, and Spaghetti Pasta, and whole grains like whole Oats (not the quick kind). Add lots of water, Iodized Table Salt, canned meats, Tomato sauces, Packs of coolaid, sugar, honey, peanut butter and the one everyone seems to forget - Vegetable oils/ butter( harder to store). Ok buy some beans too;) Do this and you are on your way - GB

Thanks for this vid! I use to work at a Dollar General, and while stocking I often thought about how certain things would be good for a food prep storage. A lot of the canned soups have a very long exp date, as well as the canned fruits. Might not be the healthiest overall, but fruits especially are gonna give a few extra vitamins and nutrients that one might need in a SHTF situation!

Good startup for the financially challenged, and for single folks. I am looking into getting my first dehydrator and going that route. I am most likely to face 3-7 days of power outage, so I focus on that first. But with grocery prices going so high, I have to look at ways to save on food by preserving "windfalls" foods.

I am hoping to have a rotating stock but a base line of things in my inventory at all times for our family. Like you, I am going to be eating these things as they get close to expiration. One thing that would help people not "miss" something about to expire is using those tiny white sticker labels and writing the expiration on the front of the cans so it is plainly visible at a glance. Great video! I have 9 children so stocking for our family of 11 is a challenge with limited funds but even more important to make sure we can feed them if SHTF.

Thanks for the comment, my personal system would use one can of these to feed 2-3 in a meal...not crack the can open and eat it all in one sitting....that i why I spoke about purchasing other things to use as "stretchers" ...a solid water system should be thought out as well as food preps...water is essential to life...you can live weeks without food compared to days without water...i would suggest redundancies in your water system....thanks for watching and for your comment!

I grew up very poor. My parents were from Kentucky. I cannot overemphasize how far Beans, Rice, and Cornbread can go. They are all cheap foods, and easy to cook. It may not be the most nutritional food, but it will last you for a long time. You can easily cook them in a dutch oven over a rocket stove. Flat bread is also very easy to make with very few ingredients.

Hi there ! With regards to pasta I always just pour boiling water over it in a small bowl , cover it with a saucer and it cooks within 10 minutes . Just a thought for you so you can have your ""chunkier" pasta without having to use your fuel. Very interesting information thank you .

fluffy fish I've also done that...but the reason why I suggested the angel hair is if in a shtf situation, in the winter with no heat, light, limited choice of containers (if on foot or packing out is necessary) the version you mentioned does not work as well because it gets cold fast n sometimes requires reheating or pouring off and adding more boiling water (not ideal of resource is limited) and takes longer.... even in the worst case scenario, cold, wet, windy and limited water, time (again, if on the move), and fuel ...the angel hair is a way better option...it's more versatile. thank you for sharing the comment and thanks for watching!

If you have a mini crock pot you can cook pasta, noodles etc, with a tomato or Alfredo sauce cooks in 10 minutes. Pasta cooks in the sauce saves time, makes 2 and one half servings. Family Dollar sells them cheap. You can cook lentils in it too. They take half an hour.

Cool ideas, cool video. I have shot that ammo and have had no problems at all. I try to stay away from Remington ammo due to many many many problems with that brand. We shoot Winchester, Federal, Aguila, TulAmmo & UMC. All great results especially the Federal. Federal ammo comes in at a very reasonable price and great quality. Take care bro. - Marco

I never cringe with vienna sausage. I actually love them and snack on them frequently. They also make for very good sandwiches if you cut them in half, lay them on the bread so they fit and put some mayo on them. That was one of my favorite after school meals.

Go to yard/garage/flea market sales to get some good used camping equipment, propane stove, good tent, a vacuum sealer, refillable tanks things that will make it easier if no power, a wood stove to put in the garage, Canned veggies that will keep as long as it is put up and dry. Bleach to clean tops, cleaning supplies, 1st aid kit.just a few suggestions to help. Good prepping.

British Columbia prepping. good work. ..but I suggest also adding a GOOD water filter and (eh gemr, Sawyer) wrapping it very good,.preferably double vacuum sealed and then like another 3 Ziploc bags...in a disaster situation you may find your stored water has gone bad (yes water goes bad) and having the filter and a way to boil well save your ass...also those extra bags might be the only clean thing you can find to store and transport water...they are light and serve many purposes when stored in the configuration suggested. good luck and keep going

+xBlazikenKnightx cool dry place with no dairy ingredients and you should be good to go for a long loooooong time...they're packed in Mylar so oxygen shouldn't be an issue for quite some time if you pick your flavors right and don't puncture the bag..you can always repackage in a food saver vacuum bag with a oxygen absorber and keep it in the dark and that'll do awesome to

Great vid, must be a couple of months supply right there. I'd want a few spices, too - a pound bag of chilli powder cheap as chips, would be flavouring your food for years, ditto pepper, even 'fancy' like oregano, rosemary and sage a great investment. I also like that, although you didn't really go into it, all those foods have a really, really long shelf life.

Good video. I like to get even smaller pastas, like couscous. They cook real fast and take up little space. As far as the dollar store mac and cheese goes, I find a lot of the items in my local dollar store are actually MORE expensive than they are at wally word. I usually hit them both if I have the time.
@MyBigThing2010
@MyBigThing2010 8 лет назад
+Joseph Ellis Thanks man! Im glad you liked it! ....I was talking about ...real "everythings a dollar" dollar stores ...not stores like "family dollar" where the item inside are different prices, ...just to clarify .....If i could find mac and cheese with cheese sauce in Mylar bags for a dollar or less at wally world ...id def be buying it there instead. It is true that even at real "dollar stores" that some items are a rip off and not worth a dollar and can be bought elsewhere for less....you just have to know your local economy and know what to buy at the dollar store and what to buy somewhere else ..or what to spend more than a dollar on if it is an item that quality is more important than "value" ....if you need something to last and not break, it would be better to buy something that "you get what you pay for" and spend a little more on it ..than it would be to buy something that is junk and have it break when you need it the most! Buy once, Cry once. for important items. Everything else...get it from the dollar store and be aware of what you getting...if you cheap out and it breaks...then you have no right to bitch and complain at that point...it on you lol ... Thanks again for the comment and for watching!!!!

+MyBigThing2010 need a couple of portable solar panels likethe ones caravan or mobile home use, a long range radio like the ones truckies use, and re-charge batteries (can work for solar panels. also food which can be eaten cold, lighting a fire to cook will be a becon to looters in the first weeks, after that they may have moved on out of town . try not to bug out if possible. have -20 C sleeping bag forwinter nights and thermal underwear, socks, gloves and beanie. Its worth the extra money, buy one a week. get a rainwater tank dark green and place it under a large evergreen tree, try not to get the big round ones, people will be looking for those but not the rectangle or small but tall round types. dont plant a vege garden in the traditional sense, plant vege among your flower bed its not so obvious, and quickly overlooked. Plant plenty of KALE wholesome and will get you thru. Buy bulk 40kg each of rice, flour, sugar (for toffee and sweets for stress times) lentles various types, 40 cans of spam for callories. Put all dry goods inwhite food grade buckets. keep pantry containers in house. BUT dig holes in yard and hide your buckets. If your house is raided give them your pantry supplies (a few days worth) let themsee they have cleaned you out, they wont be back. Then dig a little under surface of yard (should be covered by fast growing grass) and youshould have the bulk of your supplies in a hidden cool place. goes without saying these buckets should be burried in different places, holes and bury done at night not to alarm neighbours. Prey for protection, dont harm another human being and keep pets inside as they are potential food to others.

tomj528 sanitation is a different video. tp is best bought in bulk from club stores our in huge packs from Amazon. paper towels are a waste of space and money. storing a gallon of bleach takes the space of 2 rolls of paper towels and allows you to sanitize a thousand times more cleaning with reusable rags than a measly couple rolls of paper towels. hope that helps out. thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate the support. thank you for watching!
