SHUFFLE LIKE BONHAM, PURDIE, PORCARO & COPELAND with this One Hand Pattern

In this video, I demonstrate how you can learn to shuffle like John Bonham, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro & Stewart Copeland by learning one hand pattern very well.
What Bonham, Purdie, Porcaro and Copeland have in common in their shuffle, is their use of the middle triplet ghost note. That is the main ingredient that makes their shuffle sound great.
Most drummers try learning their shuffle by practicing them slowly and or breaking them up into smaller sections. That works well if your hands are developed enough to pull it off. But if they are not, these shuffles become quite difficult to learn.
This video shows you the one hand pattern it takes to learn these grooves quicker and easier.
The idea is to treat this hand pattern like it's a stick control pattern and that you are learning it as part of your hand development process. When you can do it at 150 bpm - 180 bpm, then learning these Bonham, Purdie, Porcaro, Copeland type shuffle becomes so much easier to learn.

You asked "so what’s going on here?" --well I will tell you sir. YOU ARE BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER IVE COME ACROSS. You distill what the origins are for grooves that we had a hard time playing. FANTASTIC video. It’s crazy I made a excellent living as a session drummer in Hollywood in the 80’s . If I had you as a teacher back then I would have been an "A’ list guy instead of "B-" guy. I can’t wait to start practicing again. It’s been 30 years, and now I’m excited for the first time in decades to break out my kit to mess around . A very big thank you!!! Oh and by the way I have ALWAYS sucked on shuffles and just did sessions that really did t need it except on one album . I got lucky and it sounded great but I was sweating. It’s called Memphis Blues Again by Moon Martin. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CtRztc8qdko.html recorded in 1992. Minor hit in France

Thank you sir. Again I got real lucky on that shuffle track and the engineer was awesome at drum sounds. Compressed and gated snare drum several times to be pretty big and even. The Gatling made me sound more even in dynamics than I really played :-) Just started playing with a worship band in church. It’s pretty rickety group but feels good to be playing again. Going to start to re listen to your videos and practice since I can now have a place to try them out on. I still think you’re the best out there as you make actually grasping a new concept understandable AND able to use. You sir are a genius and I do NOT toss that word around lightly.

This was a great lesson! I had worked hard on learning the Bernard Purdie shuffle but never got it smooth enough to make use of it. (That was a long, LONG time ago!) Wish I had known about this then. Makes me want to crack open the Syncopation book I have and use it to work on patterns from it!

I've seen some great breakdowns on the individual songs you referenced, but this by far is the most brilliant lesson on learning the hand pattern and applying it to ALL shuffle songs. If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime Also, I hope you take this as a complement, but "loved" you as "Mr. White" in Reservoir Dogs and "Winston Wolfe" in Pulp Fiction!

Wow! I have seen many videos on this type of shuffle. None that I have seen have ever explained the back-beat part of the pattern!! I can't thank you enough. I didn't realize it was basically a left-hand flam followed by a LH grace note Excellent explanation!!!! After watching this video I could actually play the pattern. I just have to "smooth" it out and get it 150 bpm and faster. Thank you!
@WholeLottaDrumming
@WholeLottaDrumming Год назад
Hey Walt, I am so thrilled that this video has cracked the code for you. When you break things down to the basic 'blueprint' things are usually not as difficult as they appear. Keep at it and you'll reach 150 bpm before you know it. Cheers!

What a great lesson and so we’ll explained. I have a question, I only play matched grip AND open handed which means I play the hi hat with my left hand and play a ride cymbal on my left side too. This is all on a regular four piece right handed kit. I’m assuming that the sticking you mentioned RLRRLR can then just be reverse to left hand on hi hat and right hand on snare so LRLLRL. What do you think? Thanks for a great lesson.

Hey Jarrett. Thanks for chiming in. You are correct most of the content i deliver is not for beginners. They are more for intermediate to advanced drummers. My hope for beginners is that they can still enjoy the videos and hopefully inspire them to practise and continue to develop. as far as showing off, I think it is always important to show what something sounds like at an advanced level. This gives the viewers an idea what the end game is. However, your point is well taken and i will do my best to add some content for beginners. Once again, thanks for chiming in. It's much apreciated. Cheers!

Man, I m becoming impressed witha couple of Canadian drum educators. Both you and Rob Brown , aside from being excellent drummers, make your lessons easily understandable w/o over stating what you’re trying to get across. Very refreshing in this digital world of overkill online drummers, some that may cause more damage than good because they “ think “ they’re hot and they can throw a video together and post it online . I have watched several lessons on this Purdie type shuffle but something never clicked for me to make it sound right until following this lesson of yours and I think you’ve helped me figure it out here. There’s hope after all for my Purdie based shuffle ! So I just thought I d send some gratitude and appreciation for what you do. And that stain on yer pants? What stain ? My eyes were completely drawn to that stunningly beautiful copper snare lol. That thing also sounds as good as it looks. Who built that ? I can’t make out the badge . Thanks

Hey Billy, thank you so much for the kind words. It was touching. I am new to the RU-vid world and it's comments like this that inspire me and reminds me that I am on the right track in delivering content that helps drummers. Regarding the snare, that is a Yamaha Copper snare. I used to work in a drum store back in the 90's and early 2000's. I picked it up then. It's been my go to snare for so many years. I only use it for the videos now. As far as the Purdie shuffle goes, please keep me posted on your progress. Cheers!!

Hi Marco, keeping explanations simple is not done as much as it should. Getting the basics to the masses. Well done.
