There's no way to remove the music from cutscenes, I checked in all the options menus, so I tried my best to mix everything. Also, please no spoilers in the comments! (Even though there are spoilers in this video WHOOPS
my headcanon for why shulk has this goofy confidence in smash and why he says “now it’s shulk time” is because he’s actually really nervous to be in smash so he’s pretending to be like reyn for confidence.
Metal face in smash: MoNaD0 bOy Metal face in Xenoblade: My claw slid through her soft flesh; like a hot knife through butter. Her screams were music to my ears.
@@mdm_topplelock It's been a few months, but I think both call him Monado boy. Xord does it first, but Metal Face does it afterwards as well, if I'm not mistaken.
@@mdm_topplelock actually xord merely calls him boy. Metal Face calls him Monado boy. Top of bionis bottom of alakazam mountain MF calls him by name then in sword valley back to Monado boy....I may have beaten the game a few times.... Also no one gonna address how fuked up in the head metal face is at colony 6 when u exit the mines and he says that.....I mean seriously...that line enrages shulk but also a first time player as well.
Shulk's impression in smash: I'm really feeling it, now it's shulk time! Shulk's impression in Xenoblade: if you in any way shape or form impede my progress, I will murder you in cold blood, rob your corpse of your valuables, figure out the location of your allies then go after them too.
I mean, he saw his loved one get impaled by a giant machine with a recognizable face. If it was anybody else, he would go to their funeral and carry on with his life, but because it was someone he was close to, he changed for better or worse. What makes fiction extraordinary is how it can emulate realistic emotions while maintaining those fictious elements and Xenoblade Chronicles writing is a fantastic example.
@@misterzia01 I know, I never said it doesn't make sense. It is just conceptually slightly funny that the character people remember him as is as recent as "we literally see it happen in the game" inuniverse. The way smash portraits him is not even that wrong, just timeline wise a bit scuffed.
He is just phenomenal. Normally I switch my games to Japanese when I have the option but missing out on Shulk's brilliant performance? That would be a crime.
@@JJKMagic He’s the one who made me switch from Japanese to English actually 😂while playing the game I got an ad on RU-vid of it, heard him playing Shulk, and immediately changed the language.
Shulk when fighting anyone else: Now It's Shulk Time! Shulk when fighting Rob and MegaMan: *YOU WILL KNOW THE PAIN AND SUFFERING YOU CAUSED THE EMPEROR AND FIORA*
Mega Man: Stop, I am not your enemy. This fight should never happened, Violence isn't the only solution. Shulk: Wait...You talk? Mega Man: Yes, I'm not just a machine and I'm not like them. In fact, I want the same as you
The only reason why he's overly happy in smash is because he doesn't have to endure the pain and sadness that he has to go through in the plot of his own series.
Wii Fit trainer went from “model life coach” to someone who saw some shit in WWIII and only does the life coach thing as a day job but does MMA on the weekends to let their demons out
Me: *Starts playing with Shulk in smash after playing Xenoblade DE* My friends: "Why did you start playing with Shulk" Me: *Trying not to spoil anything* "I think he's neat"
Shulk is just a really interesting & great protagonist. Most JRPG protags seem to devolve into mary sues, and gameplay wise they are always jack-of-all-trades or frontline tanks/dps. Shulk is different. His entire kit is based around someone else having aggro, he can't utilize half of his kit if a monster is on him. He's essentially a rogue/assassin. Yeah, he has plenty of badass moments like those in the video, but those moments stand out because a lot of the time he is actually pretty vulnerable. The party is constantly saving him. Xenoblade was a very different, refreshing JRPG to play back in 2010, and Shulk was a pretty decently sized reason why.
He is also interesting as a character as well. Going from a dorky scientist to a character that has a desire for revenge to realizing this desire is wrong and having to adapt as well as change his initial world views as his beliefs are being challenged.
Well I would argue a reason of why Most JRPG protags are tanks/DPS is because the start of the story a lot of the time has you on your own. Imagine trying to play the beginnings of any dragon quest as a priest like character. Also Shulk is also considered Dps.
@@DarthTalon5 I mean shulk isn't the tankiest member of the party but... he's not Melia levels of fragileness. But I agree with the other points made. I just think the game is settled into three types of members. Support/DPS/Tank.
When you compile the action scenes like that... and play mechanical rhythm in the background (instead of the usual engage the enemy that those cutscenes mostly have playing), it becomes much more apparent how much of a relentless badass Shulk is, holy crap.
If you actually think about it most rpg protagonists are ultimate BADASSES who kill universal-multiversal gods! Bravely Default is literally “a being is destroying world after world across the multiverse. Go get tricked by your version of Navi until you figure this out and then figure out how to save the MULTIVERSE
@@amitaish1055 he never once says it in the 10 hours of base game cutscenes, and in the battles only one of his arts has a 33% chance of triggering that voice line. Hardly "every moment".
@@n4n196 Y'know this may be me, but if Smash ever DID bring back Subspace or somethings similar, they better make Shulk into the Xenoblade version of him. I mean, If you can make Luigi, Ness, and Dedede being in a group after the world basically ended look cool, that means anyone can, right? Shulk, with the way he is in Xenoblade, hell his SMASH 4 TRAILER, makes that idea, while never going to happen, so much better.
Shulk during cutscenes: *dodges and blocks everything and saves his party members with the Monado Shulk in gameplay: "you don't have enough party gauge, you can't tell me what to do" *entire party dies
Similar treatment with Ike. Just play his games (FE 9 and 10) and tell me where he "fights for his friends". He wants revenge for his father's death, leads an army to liberate his country and proceeds to cut down a goddess. The friendship thing is just subtext.
I mean... leading an army to liberate your country is, by technicality, fighting for his friends, assuming his friends also live in the country they are liberating
@@thatnick967 But Ike himself never voices it like his SB counterpart. If you've never played FE9 and 10, you'd think he's some sort of My Little Pony character.
@@wynautvideos4263 Xenoblade 2 was different but okay. I watched gameplay but I still want the game, it doesn't have the same emotional story like the first one did. But I do like the silly characters and the world building.
@@mastertjt56 I’ve played 1, 2 and X. I must say that my favourite is 2, the story and voice acting are excellent. You’re right that the mood is less depressing in 2, but that’s not a negative for me.
Sakurai: Heh, wouldn't it be cool to have Shulk have some of his one liners and one of his BFF's one liners as a reference? That'll make the Xenoblade fans riot. Normies: SIDE TAUNT x 10000
Fun fact, in Japanese the taunt it "That doesn't sound good." - something Shulk would say in response to a quest. And yes it got old fast. It's also why Shulk does somewhat of a talking animation when he taunts.
Not to mention that... (SPOILER FOR XENOBLADE CHRONICLES. IT'S A GOOD GAME, GO PLAY IT!) ...Most of his bloodlust was likely fueled alot by Zanza himself residing in Shulk's body. No wonder he became more chill once Zanza left his lifeless body!
This video is but a small look into how Smash portrayals of characters can leave out so much in order to fit a representative in the game succinctly. On a positive note, I do appreciate a good Shulk fan-cam.
After finishing Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive edition, Shulk's voice actor sounds WAY better in his actually game. Take the "I'm really feeling it!" quote for an example. The comparison is just... sad.
Everyone forgets that Shulk is easily one of the most violent protagonists in recent history. He outclassses literally every other character and villain in his game through sheer force of action. "In the absence of passion, vitriol is the only acceptable substitute." - SsethTseentach
The reason why Shulk is happier and goofier in Smash, is because he got lots of threapy for his various traumas gained from the war, and ha a good support network. Smash helps him get used to post war life, by giving him an outlet for fun, non lethal fighting, since it would be difficult for him to go back to a simple peaceful life, after becoming such a killing machine.
My favorite part of this honestly is the one out of context line at prison island where Shulk tells a one armed Metal Face that he’ll know (the) pain and suffering (of the emperor and Fiora). So incredibly violent. 💀
I know this is old but man I first knew of shulk in smash I didn't like him he seemed eh too me XD just a meme surfer dude....I eventually gave xenoblade a chance expecting. Too dislike it but shulk really was different then what I expected he was cute at first then well damn I just wanna hug him now and melia/dunban
I mean, sort of. It is more like he is 'bipolar' in the actual game than anything, so when he gets angry, he goes all out. On the flip side, you definitely see that calmer and more light-hearted side of him a lot throughout the game.
Pomeranian Warfare how is he bipolar.... you wouldn’t be clam if you seen your childhood friend getting killed in front of you or seeing the future of people dying that could happen at any moment ?
@@brazyfever787 Mate, why do you think I put the quotations around the word? I am not saying that he literally has some sort of bipolar disorder -- not even close. It was just used figuratively to suggest that he has a lots of ups and downs in his mood throughout the game.
The immediate cut from happy Shulk in Smash and "This is a good result" to Shulk screaming "I'LL KILL YOU" over the angriest sounding OST in Xenoblade Chronicles is a perfect display of the tonal dissonance between the two games.
Shulk in Xenoblade: War-torn badass dead-set on avenging his people and ending the millenial war between Bionis and Mechonis. Shulk in Smash: Hello m8s time for an mlg shulk montage innit 69 lol nice
This was the little push i needed to get into Xenoblade, and after beating both the main game and Future Connected and about to head into the second one, all i can say is thank you
@@KnightGamer724 Yes, however i did not finish Torna in time and i still haven't (almost there though) which is also convenient since my physical copy preorder of 3 got cancelled and i'm trying to find one, so at least i've got some Xenoblade to play while i wait, please don't spoil anything you know i'm trying to head in blind since i couldn't do so for 1 and 2
@@KnightGamer724 Hey, i'm back, i beat the game on monday and i'm doing the post game. HOLY FUCKING SHIT! "Fantastic" doesn't even begin to describe how fucking GOOD this game is, my new favorite game of all time no doubt!
I like the sheer contrast of how someone can see him as a jolly optimist who had a grand destiny thrust upon him by a magic sword and is a bit of a jokester when in his actual game he's a complete badass who has seen some serious crap and experienced a lot of pain and tragedy.
Actually it can't cut Bionis intelligent people, so it can cut mekons and animals of bionis, but that specific sword can cut Smash characters, becouse they aren't of Bionis. Other thing will be another Xenoblade 1 character or a Shulk ditto (but dittos are strange to explain)
Shulk in Smash: I’m really feeling it! Shulk in Xenoblade: *screaming, murder, screaming, pain, screaming, suffering, MORE SCREAMING, M O R E M U R D E R*
Admittedly it's kinda unfair to judge Rex based on Shulk, because Shulk is a great character with a phenomenal voice actor. As for Shulk in Smash it really is hard to portray the many aspects of Shulk in a few lines... so yeah, taking the meme route is definitely much easier lol
Honestly i feel Rex is a great protagonist, even compared to Shulk, but his Voice Acting is so fucking terrible it kills his entire character, he also has some of the cheesiest lines in the whole franchise, but otherwise? Fucking adore his character arc and how he interacts with the rest of the party
So, it’s sorta like how in Smash, Captain Falcon is a campy over the top fighter who shouts a lot where as his F zero self is more of a stoic Batman-type figure.
I always wondered why they make him so "happy flower" in smash when in XC its much more serious and mature (and more at the end of the game, when he forgives someone :O)
As someone who first knew Shulk from Smash and then just recently played Xenoblade for the first time... LOL YES, I was shook when virgin boy suddenly became a badass
Having played both games extensively, I'd say it's pretty silly to expect a crossover party/fighting game to accurately convey the depth of the protagonist of a 100+ hour JRPG
