Cherkassky was one of the most sophisticated musicians I ever heard. His playing was so intelligent and alive. He could find new things to say in the most hackneyed pieces - he was always ready to re-think familiar works. I was fortunate enough to hear him in around 15 recitals, as well as many times with orchestra. I once walked from London's Wigmore Hall to a reception in a hotal with him and he asked me which pianists I liked best in Beethoven - I said Elly Ney. "Now you're talking!" he replied...
He used stay at the Hotel Pierre when in NYC where I worked in the 80s and he introduced me to Martha Argerich's playing. I got to hear him in recital and concerto many times. What a wonderful pianist and delightful human being. I heard him perform his musical grandfathers piano concerto #4 with the NYPhil.... stupendous!
Thanks very much for uploading this beautiful piece. Cherkassky plays it wonderfully . Interesting variation at 1:27. What concert was this an encore to?
