Dynamic mics are a great choice for podcast style shows, but they used to require USB interfaces and inline "lifters", etc. making many people stick with the ol' Blue Yeti. Now there are lots of great choices for plug-m-play dynamic USB mics. Let's look at one of them.

SHURE SM7B: amzn.to/3kpG3SS
BLUE YETI: amzn.to/3OMXz1r
FOCUSRITE SCARLETT SOLO: amzn.to/3OMXz1r

I've been using a PG58 with a fairly cheap Yamaha mixer/interface for a long time. It sounds fine, but my needs are changing and I want to simplify my setup. I've been eyeing this mic for a while and it looks like it could be well worth the money, especially with that replacement windscreen. I didn't even know that was possible! Thank you for this overview, I found it very helpful.

It's just a personal choice but I don't use USB microphones for the simple reason that all microphones are analogue with low output signals that have to be preamplified, and this involves manually adjusting the gain structure with the help of the peak lights of the mixer or pre-amp. Then the signal has to be converted from analogue to digital with an A/D converter. So all that has to be done automatically in the USB microphone, and I would much rather do all the pre-amp, gain structure and A/D in my mixer.

The question is, can you do materially (i.e. audible difference) better than the mic? That's doubtful even with a lossless master, let alone a highly compressed deliverable like a podcast or RU-vid video. So why bother?

@@Humcrush It's not entirely what I can do so much as what the microphone preamplifier can do. The first consideration is always the microphone pre-amp, which is a major consideration in good mixers, and interfaces. So you have to trust the mic-preamp in the USB microphone to be better than those in the best mixers or interfaces on the market. When you say, "...why bother," this is more a question for Rupert Neve Designs, Focusrite or Presonus et al. Of course I could mention the microphone preamplifers that cost thousands of dollars, but that would be going to extremes. In my opinion the USB microphones are for non-technical people, maybe, as you said doing podcasts and RU-vid videos. My background is in live sound, broadcast and recording.

Are you using the stock windscreen or the Shure SM7B windscreen?
@Humcrush
@Humcrush 2 года назад
The SM7B replacement. The stock windscreen is literally useless.

Great video, which compression setting do you use in the Motiv app?
@Humcrush
@Humcrush 2 года назад
If I'm recording for post, I have compression off in the Motiv app and do compression in Audition or Resolve. For live broadcasting/podcasting, I use the medium setting.

The problem was I forgot my teleprompter. You don't want to see how bad I would be without anything.

@@methodinsurance same here brother but after 50 videos I got better all I do is I have a cheat sheet and yeah its hard in the beginning but once you over the initial hill its like a second nature. At least for the audience it looks natural not like you reading the news ha. Its all subjective though some people are more sensitive to this than others 🤷🏻‍♂️

What are your settings for this mic specific and what software do you use to record the audio in?
@Humcrush
@Humcrush 2 года назад
I record into Adobe Audition. Any app that supports 24bit/48khz should give the exact same results...it's just data by the time it reaches your DAW. The only setting I adjust in the Shure Motiv app is the gain. All other processing is done in post. Since it's unique to my voice in my room, the exact settings wouldn't be very useful for anyone else. (I do the usual stuff, mostly compression and EQ.)

@@Humcrush thank you very much! Your audio sounds super clean btw, that’s why I asked. I assume you use manual mode on the Shure app?
@Humcrush

@@imjesusmgarcia1997 Correct, manual mode. Everything off except for gain.

Can you connect the MV7 to a Zoom H1N and record audio like that?
@Humcrush

Yes, it has an a DAC and an XLR connection so you can use virtually any recorder.
