#ShureMV7 #BlueYeti #PodcastMic
Comparison between the brand new Shure MV7 Podcast mic and the venerable Blue Yeti. In this video, both mics were recorded over USB w/no post-processing other than volume normalization.
The Shure picks up some boomy desk noises and movement. I think that's a result of having the mic mounted on a desk mount. I should have accounted for that better. The Yeti definitely had an advantage in being mounted on a stand free from the desk. On the other hand, I was surprised at how good the Yeti sounded. I've never loved the results from the Yeti, but it goes to show how much the acoustic qualities of the room plus removing the mic from the desk play into the quality of the recording.

As a non-professional audio person, I prefer the Shure MV7 because I do not have an acoustically treated room, and I am not planning to do much of that. A dynamic mic works the best for my kind of use case.

I think it's important to identify what it is that a microphone (or any piece of gear) isn't doing for you, or what can be improved. And if you can't identify specific things, then you probably don't need to upgrade

Great review! I've been using a Blue Yeti for about a year now and have no real issues with it - overall a solid and dependable USB mic. The main problem is a less-than-deal recording space (which can be somewhat overcome through recording software) but I was surprised at how close these two mics were in sound quality. I had been looking at a Shure mic as the next step up (SM7B is out of my price range) and the MV7 seems like a great next mic but, to your credit, this review has really highlighted that this isn't hugely necessary just yet!

Great review! I just recently bought a Shure MV7 after having the Blue Yeti for 4+ years, that mic would pick up everything and constantly having popping/fizzing static noises, it’s cable port also became loose so the cable would always fall out, if I plugged earphones in then it made these beeping noises, the tone sounds harsher and all over the place but now with the MV7 it sounds so sharp and smooth with hardly any background noise, works perfectly with PS4! I love the MOTIV app too so you can lock any custom setting on it before using it on other devices. I still love both mics though as I can take advantage of using the condenser and dynamic for different things :) I have heard that using an SM7B windscreen on the MV7 also helps a lot! Glad I bought that windscreen too as it would stop any potential explosive noises.

Thanks for the great review. One thing that is making me consider upgrading to the MV7 from the Yeti is the voice isolation and lower sensitivity. With my Yeti I pick up more background noise (traffic, PC fans, room noise) than I'd like. Your recording room seems to be well-controlled, so I wonder whether the advantages of the MV7 don't shine as much as they might in a noisier space.

@@Rogeras32 Totally agree with this. I had a Blue Yeti and it would pick up a bug farting from 25ft. away. The MV7 is way less sensitive to background noise. It's saved me so much time when I go to edit my audio because there's less background for me to subtract from the recording.
@otovean4540
@otovean4540 3 года назад
This was really helpful. What I had noticed from the MV7 compared to the Blue Yeti would have to have been how it picked up the surrounding sounds. The Blue Yeti had picked up surrounding sounds such as his hands when they clap together, mind you not very loudly, and the shock from hitting the desk while recording. Not only that but the Yeti also picks up keyboard sounds and a lot of surrounding sounds compared to the MV7. The MV7 sounds slightly muffled and a little bit more deafened compared to the Blue Yeti, but it doesn't pick up as many ambient sounds or surrounding sounds as it focuses more on vocals. If you plug the MV7 through its XLR Cable into an audio interface, I believe the sound quality will become a lot better compared to the blue yet in terms of their vocals. On a side note, the Yeti sounds deeper compared to the MV7. In conclusion, I believe for those wanting a good quality mic but don't want to spend too much money, they should purchase the Yeti for podcasts as well as video recording but not singing or production. For those who want to sing or produce music as well as podcast professionally, and don't have the budget for the SM7B at the moment, should definition buy the MV7 as it is a great budget XLR mic.

Run on phantom power or use cloud lifter if you want it to have more gain via XLR (cloud lifter still needs phantom anyhow). The SM7B's filter head fits on this and will mitigate plosive and sibilance issues, the mv7's issue is the spacing between the pickup head and the filter tip.

The nice thing about the sm7 though it has both USB and XLR input. Which means I can go next level with it If I want to. Also the software with the SM7 it makes it really easy to use for new time mic users. The Yeti is more versitile though, with all the different mic setups. But if your just going to do podcast/streams/youtube the. I highly recommend the shure. The Shure is more versitile with a boom as well. The yeti always felt a bit clunky in that regard. Many thanks for your vid and this comparison! Really helpfull! I think I prefer a bit sound of Yeti which is brighter and more dynamic. And mic is more versatile. And I've noticed a lot of "pop" with MV7 and no with Yeti... But MV7 got a deeper and mat sound, and for what I need it for, I think it is better. Then I love his active sound reduction, and the free software possibilities. So I've just bought an MV7 😉

Very well done and interesting, thanks. As others have said, I am surprised how similar they sound. But, you are going a great job at recording, and I suspect there's a bigger real-life difference in more typical conditions. I don't have the MV7, but while you indicate it's sensitive for a dynamic mic, I doubt it's going to pick up a faucet running downstairs, or the cat scratching 2 rooms away, or simply your clothing rustling if you fidget or move your hands around, as the Yeti does. I'll take a decent dynamic mic over even an expensive condenser mic, for real world recording.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
Thank you for the comment. I think if the Yeti, or any condenser mic, is picking up that much noise, you have the gain too high. They are usually cardioid (or have that option), so they should reject noise off-axis just like a dynamic

Hey love this video. Just subscribed. This was just the comparison I was looking for. Thanks. I have the blue yeti and it works very well for what I do, but I’m always interested in upgrades when new shiny objects are released. :) I’ve been reluctant to get an XLR when the usb mic seems to work well for the basic stuff I have produced. Do you have any thoughts on upgrading if ‘nothing is broke’? Or, rather, how do you decide if you need a new mic or not? Thanks.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
I tend to buy a lot of stuff that I don't exactly need, so I'm not the best person to offer advice. But, since you asked ... I'd encourage you to keep using what you're using if you're satisfied with it. I think you should "upgrade" if you can identify specific things that you aren't able to do or that your aren't satisfied with in your current setup. I started looking into XLR mics when I had a business case for doing it (running live streams & podcasts). But if it were just me in my studio, a USB mic would be perfect

I watched a lot of reviews on various USB microphones and did not find information about the possibilities of connecting, for example, Blue Yeti without a computer directly to a DSLR camera via a headphone output with USB power through a power bank. Tell me is it possible? Do you know?
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck Год назад
Hi. I'm really not sure if that setup would work to be honest. I think the Yeti and other similar USB microphones need driver software to interface correctly with the computer and therefore I don't know what would happen if you just plugged one into a camera via a 3.5" cable. Could be worth a shot but it might be easier just to get an on-camera video microphone and run a long 3.5" cable to it. Something like the Rode Videomic NTG

@gotborgmusic
@gotborgmusic 3 года назад
The Yeti have more bass and it’s better because he it better captures the grain of the voice. But as a podcast sound engineer, I would recommend you the MV7, the sound is a bit flatter, it has less brilliance but is less aggressive for the ears, especially if you don't process the audio after your podcast recording. The MV7 has an additional argument that few people talk about, it reduces the noise coming from behind the microphone (when you use it in usb) and believe me, it changes everything! I work with podcasters who have blue yeti and I have noticed that it picks up too much of what's going on behind and also the bad acoustics of a room while the MV7 focuses mainly on your voice. The MV7 will save you time in post-production if you treat your voice after recording and make your recording less "aggressive" for the ears.

I don't know how to quantify it, but the Shure just has a bit of a smoother or richer tone.
