Hi ! Do you know how to have a dual lightning port to charge my iPhone + use my Shure MV88 microphone (the lightning one) at the same time? Thank you and well done ! Thanks
If you’re interested in this consider the newer MV88+. This was built for the iPhone 7 and had a lot of drawbacks like what it apple changes the charging port again, what it you need to charge while you record ect. New version fixed those concerns. But still a killer mic
Hello quick technical question about the Shure MV88 Mic. Will it take over from the internal iPad mic without needing to run the shure app to do so? So say for example I want to run the mic directly into an app like "koala sampler" or "beatmaker pro" to capture my guitar, percussion etc as direct samples will this work?
Hey man - I got this mic and one thing that is annoying is a crackling sound it makes. I play the guitar and sing but with every recording there are like spots where the sound pops a bit. Do you have a solution for that? thank you and all the best
Does it pop or crackle? It’s two different issues. Pop can be from air going into the mic. If you’re singing in the mic you want to use a pop filter to avoid those pop sounds. Now for crackling I have no clue.. it could be that vibrations are going into the mic. Is the mic/phone mounted properly on a stand?
Hello Thanks a lot for nice review^^ I'm looking for a mic to record piano playing on a grand piano (Just started youtube^^) Would you recommend this mic? I have a galaxy note 10, so I probably need a shure mv88+.
Hey there, you are welcome. Sure the mic will sound great, but to really capture a grand piano it's better to invest in a couple of mics as the instrument is so large. But if you are on low budget, the mv88+ will definitely sound good enough and much better than your phone microphones.
how is it for recording quiet sounds for films and stuff like sound of hand rubbing on fabric or fire or rain and river and things like that or food sizzling….what about noise floor?
an alien undercover if you’re close miking I would say it’s pretty good. The noise floor is decent but cannot compete with high end mics/preamps. It depends on your budget. I would say it’s definitely good enough if you’re looking to spend less than $400.
@@Gmakamian so as aa person who owns zoomh6 and mv88,,you think for my type of work flow (recording sound fx and maybe some acoustic covers out door with vocals and guitar) which one works better ? zoom or shure?
@@analienundercover8207 the shure sounds a bit better than the built in zoom mic but in your case I would get the Zoom H6 hands down. You will be much more flexible and you can buy superior mics in the future. The pre-amps in the Zoom H6 are pretty good so with good mics you can achieve a lot of great stuff. Also you will probably need at least 2 mics for guitar/voice so the shure wouldn't work well in that case.
Can this mic be used without using the Shure app/can it be used in a different app? (I want to use a four track app to record songs and sometimes just voice memos so want to know if the mic would still be doing the recording or if it would revert back to the phone mic if the Shure app isn't being used)
Hi Johhny, the mic works regardless if you're in the Shure app or not. And it keeps the settings that you chose through the app. So yes it can work with any app you want.
Hi Kelly, yes it does unless you put your phone on airplane mode. However, these issues have been fixed with newer iphones. I think anything after iPhone X doesn't have these issues. My 11 pro works perfectly.
Greg Makamian thanks Greg, i have an iPad (5th génération). I am a singer and guitar player for years and I’m wondering if this would be worthwhile to purchase for recording audio videos, would it make a significant improvement? Thanks again
@@kellygotell1179 It's a difficult question to answer, because I don't know what kind of quality you are expecting to get. If you're comparing it to the built-in mics of the iPad, then this will sound 100x better. But if you're recording voice and guitar, then it won't come close to 2 dedicated microphones with close-micing techniques.
Greg Makamian yes thanks again, it is a difficult question. If it’s better than the built-in mic on iPad it may be worth it. I’m just looking for a noticeable improvement compared to the internal mic on my iPad for now. I’ve watched many reviews and yours is the best. I’ve listened to samples of both , and in one review, I found it hard to tell the difference between the MV88 vs iPhone 11 internal mic. Thanks for your time Greg.
@@kellygotell1179 My pleasure. It depends on many things, like how close you are micing and how the room sounds. I would say it's better to buy 2 dedicated mics, even some cheap shure sm58's and an audio card. You will pay a bit more but you will have much more control over your sound and it will definitely sound better. The mv88 is good if you don't want the hassle of setting up mics.
Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one of these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better to acoustic spanish guitar and singing. Arround or less than 150 dolars. Have a good day!
Excellent thanks. I'm researching for a simple mic set-up to record me singing and playing guitar acoustically. Sounds like this will fir the bill. Cheers
Greg Makamian Hi, if I was using this for instagram videos/stories etc. Is it really as simple as plugging the mic in and recording through my iphone camera app? Thanks.
@@Gmakamian hi Greg, is it possible to use for live streaming now, without interference as you mentioned in the vid? I primarily need the mic for Facebook live
Dear sir 🙏🙏 namaste from India. Is there auto tune as well in this phone while using with an i phone ? And is there mixing facility also in this phone on direct mobile
new Shure MV88+ Mic/video kit (directional mic on a stand similar to yours)... Its not connecting to FACEBOOK LIVE (sounds like sawing wood/distortion) unplugged it and use the phone direct it was fine. I see a lot of info for iPhones .. any suggestions FOR ANDROIDS? Please tell me this is not only for iPhones!
Seems like the Shure MV88+ has the same issues as the older MV88 when it comes to live streaming. For Android I would recommend the Rode VideoMic Me if you have a headphone jack. Unfortunately it's not as good as the Shure, but if you just want to capture your voice and live stream, then it's a good mic.
Does the video/audio recording issue still happens if you are not connected to the internet? Have you recorded a video to upload later and you still notice the issue?
Hi, I just bought this mic . The problem is that I have an iPad pro 2020 with USB c . I also bought an adapter, but the mic is not working . What can I do ?
Hi Daniel, I apologize for the late reply. Unfortunately I can’t help you as I don’t own a usb-c ipad. Did you buy an official apple adapter? Sometimes 3rd party adapters don’t work with everything.
Karina Tarditti if you have a good sounding room it can sound great. The room sound is more important than a mic. Truthfully you can get a great sound from $20 mic if your room has good acoustics.
well done you did a normal review of the sure mv88 mike which was easy to understand thank you.normally a lot of these reviews specially from america go over the top with there acting it tatally kills the video review and i dont watch them.
I have a little question 😊 connecting mv88 cancels the iphone microphone? When using the video recording app, is it recorded with the audio of mv88 or iphone?
Interested in doing drum covers playing along with music from my own music files on the iPhone. Would this work in this situation? I also have the Yamaha rec-and share app on my iPhone 8 which allows you to play along with your music files. Would this mic do a quality job in this application?
I researched this mic and bought it. Sooo frustrated right now. I am a pianist and in need of a great mic for sound recordings. I did one recording- the very first one with the mic and was excellent. Since then, I started hearing this “ white “ shhh like noise and I am wasting two days now testing and trying to get rid of it. 11 pro is the phone I use. Help? Please.
Hey bud. Unfortunately, I can't help you much on this. Sounds like maybe there's a connection issue? Try deleting/re-installing the app and see if that helps. If not, maybe I would return the mic for a replacement.
Hi, and thanks for this vid. For sure this us a awesome mic ! I used with my iPad Air 2. Now I have got an iPad Air 4, equipped with a USB C connector ! Any idea for an adaptor able to connect my new iPad to MV88 mic ? Thanks a lot.
Hi Alain. I did a quick search and it seems like it does not work. Also on shure’s official website it states that the mic is unfortunately not compatible with any usb-c apple products.
Hi there! We are a brand new channel and finding a real problem recording our lil Christian’s ( age 5) soft voice. Do you think this mic will work ? Is it sensitive for moving little boys and a female voice that is up close? And if this doesn’t work totally... do you think there would be a way for him to wear a cavalier mic and it interface well with this? Any opinion will be greatly appreciated Thanks! Oh, and I liked and subscribed ❤️👍😀
Hey, thanks for subbing! I would say it depends on your room's noise level. When recording, the most important thing is how the room sounds. If you have a great room sound, you can get amazing results even with the cheapest mic. To answer your question: yes this mic would work with recording soft voices. If the room is noisy, just put this mic very close to his mouth and use a pop filter. I don't really know much about lav mics to recommend them, but my general idea is that I would stay way from lav mics for singing. Hope that helps.
Greg Makamian thank you so very much! I think we will buy this mic and check out your link when we do! Thank you for taking the time to answer. ( I have asked this same question on 4 different really large channels yet you are the only one who have ever answered) so thank you for caring about your viewers 💕💕
Hi Greg! Nice video. Shure says the MV88 will work with Facebook Live but I’m having troubles. Does it work with streaming apps or not? I can’t seem to find a definitive answer.
Hi Champian. The mic should work fine with any streaming app. The problem I had with mine was that there was noise while streaming with this mic. Someone else commented that he didn't have my issues so maybe it has been fixed. You need to download the MOTIV Audio app on your phone first and go through the settings. Then the mic will work with any app as soon as you plug it in. Hope that helps.
A few other people mentioned that and I just tried it on my iphone 11 pro and indeed there is no interference. It seems like newer iphones are working well with the mic. The iphone that gave me interference was the iphone 8. Good to hear!
You could, but it really depends on the quality of the audio you want. For speech and especially whispering you want a good quality shotgun mic. Now there are expensive and cheap shotgun mics and the more you spend the better sound you'll get. Can the MV88 do it? Yes it can. Will it sound as good as a good shotgun mic? No.
Ausencio Trejo Yes you can, however there is noise in the audio signal due to wifi or cell service. Someone commented here that he didn’t have the noise issues, so now I’m not sure if there is noise or not. But yes the mic works with livestreaming.
Hey thanks for the video. I’m about to buy one of these and I just wanted to ask,... Couldn’t it be used for Facebook lives other vid streaming on WiFi? It would just require taking out the Sim card to go on Wi-Fi only right? Yes obviously that’s a big limitation because you couldn’t walk around away from Wi-Fi but just saying that it’s not accurate that there’s no way to use this mic for live streaming without interference. Correct or no?
Hi Peter, the interference problems have been fixed with newer iPhones so it's totally fine to use. Anything above iPhone X to my knowledge does not have interference. My iPhone 11 max works fine. It was my iPhone 8 plus that was having issues when I made this video.
@@aimee1689 Absolutely it can be used for live-streaming. And yes the app has built-it EQ, Reverb, limiter and compressor. You can also switch the mic from mono to stereo and different mic patterns.
@@Gmakamian aaah brill thank you! still thinking about whats best for me for what I need right now, but if I go for this one il use your link. thanks again
@@Gmakamian Hi Greg, one more question, how reliable would you say this mic was for online sound healing, so whilst using sound bowls, tuning forks with voice etc? With this mic mentioning it can work with bands and orchestras etc, I would guess it picks up sound pretty well?
Hello quick technical question about the Shure MV88 Mic. Will it take over from the internal iPad mic without needing to run the shure app to do so? So say for example I want to run the mic directly into an app like "koala sampler" or "beatmaker pro" to capture my guitar, percussion etc as direct samples will this work?
I just bought it and I am extremely disappointed with the voice quality. It's not as good as expected. I am wondering why my mics are not as good as all RU-vidr mics are. Which mic you are using except ShureMV88+?
The most important thing when it comes to sound is the room sound. If your room is not a good sounding room, you will not get a good sound even if you use a 10,000 dollar mic. I always tell people that the most important thing is to fix your room to have a somewhat decent sound first. Now I don't know what you're using this mic for, but if you are close-micing (putting the mic very close to your mouth), you should be able to get a good sound even if your room is not treated. You should first tell me what you are using the mic for, how you are using it and what you are trying to achieve so I can help.
@@Gmakamian Thank you for such a prompt response. I bought ShureMV88+ for recording Videos, audios on my iPhone X Max. Yes, my room is a bit bigger with big walls that might be the reason for not getting good sound, but still I tried it outside and to some other places as well, but it's not very pleasing or satisfactory sound though. I am still looking for a mic that enables me to get good sound of my videos/audios.
@@jkofcl I am guessing you are holding the iphone at arms length for vlogging? Try setting the mic to mono-cardoid through the app and enable the compressor on the "light" setting. Tell me if this helps. Also can you try to explain what you don't like? Does your voice sound "distant"? Is there too much background noise? What is the problem exactly? I am trying to understand the exact issue so I can recommend some tips.
@@Gmakamian Thank you so much for your support. I will try the settings as recommended and will see if the voice quality gets better. My exact problem was with video recording. I want to get the sound as normally I see RU-vidrs. They have really loud sound which sounds even better to hear. While when I play back my voice, it's not as loud and serene as I was expecting. There is no background sound at all. Your recommendation to keep the mic in mono-cordoid is going to help in my opinion. What about the video? Is there any setting in video too?
@@jkofcl No problem. Ok, firstly you are comparing your audio to a RU-vidrs who post-process their audio using plugins in software like Logic, Premiere, Finat Cut etc etc. To boost the volume louder you would need certain tools like EQ, Compressor/Limiter. The app for the mic has a limiter and compressor but that is not enough to give you a perceivable loud volume like most youtubers have. You would need some kind of software to edit the audio. I think you should search on youtube first how to use audio software to make your voice louder and learn it step by step.
@@Gmakamian Nope....I was Live Streaming testing the mic posting just to me and I listened back through my headphones and it sounded clear as day. I would like to hear more low end so I am still tweaking the EQ and other settings to get it where I want it. I do a solo act with backing tracks so it sounds like a full band...Used an iPad obviously connected to my WiFi since I was streaming live...my guess is if you use a phone (which I have not tried yet) you may get that interference...Cheers
@@Gmakamian Oh also wanted to mention, I watched a couple other reviews and you misstated something on your review. The mic does only swing 90 degrees in one direction but the capsule itself can rotate. This is really important for mic placement and Stereo field recording. Stay safe and healthy.
Jeffrey Milkey thanks for the comments, must have missed the swiveling. Good to hear it works fine on your ipad! Thanks again, and stay safe too in these crazy times.
@@jeffmilkey wait please do let me know mate, does this mean if I buy a usb c make to lightning female, I will be able to use the mic with my iPad? It’s the only reason holding me from purchasing... and I don’t really like the mv88+ because it’s not “stuck” to the phone as this one is. Too bad it lacks a monitor output
Super helpful! I was wondering how many hours of battery power it would use on my phone. 4 hours is more than enough, so thank you for mentioning that! Stay well!
The new mv88+ is improved in every way, however the old mv88 is much faster to setup since it's just plug and play. At this point personally I would get the mv88+ myself but depends if you need the improvements.
1. If you have an instrumental and want to record over it the app is useless. 2. Simply turn your phone or iPad on airplane mode. That cuts out the interference your picking up.
6AD 6ARZ the interference was only mentioned for livestreaming as you needed wifi to livestream and thus have interference. At the time of this review, putting your phone on airplane meant no wifi so no livestreaming. It’s only after iOS 10 that was possible to put your phone on airplane and still have wifi.
Hi thanks for a excellent video :) Will both MV88 and MV88+ work with Facebook Live now? I need it for vocal, flute recording, some sampling of sounds + also Facebook Live of some concerts.
