Shure MV88 iOS Condenser Mic Review / Test 

This is the mic I use haha

It’s is amazingly unbelievable that in all of the videos I’ve seen about this mic, nobody bothers to mention the important fact that if you want to record a video on landscape mode (widescreen) , you have to rotate the mic because if not when recording in stereo the left and right are actually going to be pointing up and down

Probably the best phone mic ever created, sounded really good, Shure has sure outdone themselves.

I was playing around with this mic (had no idea how to use it) but I took my case off my iPhone.. ended up using the video options to record and laid it down on a couch not far from my kit. I use the Meinl Dark Classic Customs which my friends complain they are too loud.. However I let the phone record while myself and this other guy just jammed out to some songs he was writing. It was an awesome jam session and I had completely forgotten that I left the phone recording. To my surprise I could hear his voice perfectly and his guitar parts (he was playing through an old PA system) and my drums had no muffling or barrier on them but it sounded as if the music we played was mixed so that one instrument didn’t smother the other... I do hope this band works out as my beat friend is the one who got us all together but it seems as if myself and the other guy were the only two objecting to just doing cover songs. Not that I don’t love The Smashing Pumpkins or Bush, Nirvana, etc... it’s just to me those are outdated and the music his friend had made sounded amazing and progressive. As a drummer I’ve been in bands where playing the pocket was the only way to make it. But to those drummers who know about the pocket understand it’s very limiting on how you can play and trying to do anything other than playing the pocket sounds like your just trying to show off rather than invent something of your own. I think there are those musicians who were meant to be cover band artist. Then there are those who will make their own great music and maybe one day someone will cover their songs. But having this mic hooked to my iPhone (didn’t use the proper software, nor did I properly position it right) but still got a wonderful recording of what we did gives me great hope and promise. This was possibly the best $150 investment I’ve ever made and cannot wait until we practice again and I have it set up properly. That way we can listen to the cover song that one band mate wants to do, then listen to the melodic and ever changing melodies of this new style that his friend has... thanks to Shure for making an affordable mic that picks up exactly what it needs to and when recorded using the proper tools can allow one to cut clips and basically produce your own music. Nothing beats experience and I’m definitely not saying this mic and the programs that work with it are substitutes for the real deal. But if you are just starting out and as we all know the economy can be in the crapper but music equipment will never be cheap. This is a great compromise! Can’t wait to watch more videos to see what this baby can do as I’m definitely sold on it

My question is this so do I need to use the Motiv video app to actually record video and use the Shure mic or do I do the Shure mic settings using Motiv and then use my iPhone X’s camera to shoot video and it will then use my Shure’s mic to override my iPhone’s Mic?? Trying to figure out the best sequence: To use my iPhone X’s video with the mic or to use Shure’s video app to use the mic?

good video. i bought one but returned it since it won't work with any iphone or ipad in a case. although the sound was pretty good, I get much better recordings out of my tascam digital handheld. in the end, it all depends on what you want to do with it. I also found this mic to me a little hollow-sounding and not too real or full. i'm picky. been into film and audio engineering for years. great channel you have!

I just picked one of these up and I'm trying to determine what the best setting for recording my improv shows is. Two things I'm concerned with are ensuring it picks up all the performance aspect, but the audience laughter doesn't drown it out. Assuming there is laughter. It is improv, after all. Thanks!

Dopest mic Just wish they placed a lightning port on it so you can connect for charging still. Im torn between getting this or a LAV I feel a lav is still more flexible and cost less.

Hey I love your reviews! Quick question - based on your experience, if you’re trying to record a podcast with an iPad or iPhone, would you recommend using the shure mvi88 or using a usb mic with a camera adapter? I heard the adapters can be a bit fickle, so I’m considering a lightning mic...

You and the creator of Backpack Studio have literally helped me get my podcast off the ground. I use Backpack Studio for all my recordings so my question would be since the settings are app based via Motiv shure app would the settings still work while using a different third party app such as Backpack?
