It’s an MV88+ with XLR and phantom power. Nearly identical app and everything. I think the MV88 is a fantastic mic for smartphones. The X2U is a no brainer for nearly the same use cases, but with your own mic of choice. It sounds really good for how portable it is. Like, you can’t even hear the noise on cellphone speakers. Watching back on the TV it’s a bit more noticeable, still not at all bad though.

Awesome! Fun fact: when doing the post production for the Trial of the Chicago 7, they needed to do a Loop Group to get the sounds of the protesters on the streets, but covid lockdown had just started and they couldn’t get everyone together; let alone one person. So they sent all the actors Shure MV88 mics and taught them how to use it remotely. All the actors found a quiet place in their own houses to record their parts. Then they put it all together and that’s the sound of the protests in the film. That’s my MV88 story. Haha.

This video was about an interface or something, right? Gosh, I should have been paying more attention, because the only thing I remember was an "Easter egg" FART. And then my mind went to my happy humor place where I blank out and giggle and enter a true state of non-compliance with reality. Thank you, master, for sending me into a fart bliss.

Will, It's funny that you mentioned Mike Pipe and Koala Bears in the same video. You probably are not aware that Mr.Pipe was a legendary Koala tamer in a traveling Australian circus in the early 1920's Unfortunately, he succumbed to a deadly poison after accidentally consuming Eucalyptus leaves, which makes up 100% of the Koala's diet. The only possible antidote ( MVX2V ) had not yet been discovered, how sad. I think you're doing a wonderful job of bringing focus to this lifesaving tool.

Great video, thanks man loads of value and humor. Question what camera and lens do you use for the headshots? Is that the Canon M50 with a 50mm lens? Also I noticed you are using the Shure SM57 mic. What setup of microphone to record on a laptop would you recommend to get? For example the Shure SMB7 + MVx2U?

Hey. Thanks very much! All my videos are shot mainly on the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K with a Sigma Art 18-35 lens now. My earlier videos were shot on an M50 with a Sigma 30mm lens. As far as microphone setups for a laptop, I’d first need to know what you’re doing with it. Podcast? Music? And then if need to know if you have an acoustically treated room and if you have total silence (no outside car noises, babies crying, dogs, etc). Then I’d be able to guide you better.

@@TheRecordist Hi :) thank you for the super quick reply. The mic is for podcasting/voice without any music. I currently have a cheap FDUCE dynamic mic but I love the way your audio quality sounds. What setup would you think knowing that the room I am recording in is not sound proof, actually it is alive has good acoustics (from the perspective of playing the violin, it has good acoustics, but for audio recording it echoes) Also my two young kids might shout occasionally and I would prefer not include that in the recording ;)

@@lukenvellacritien hey there. No worries. I would definitely stay with a dynamic mic for your purposes. And the “alive” sounding room for a violin is usually not great for voice work. Finding ways to reduce reverb (echos) usually goes a long way to helping you sound more professional. As far as mics go, the Shure SM7B or SM7dB is about the best dynamic mic that is all inclusive (meaning shockmount, pop screen, etc is included). But it’s not cheap. Also, if you don’t get the SM7dB version, you might need a Cloudlifter or other in-line preamp to help boost the signal - depending on your interface. The SM57 is a great runner up. But you’ll need to also buy a pop screen and potentially a shockmount. As for interfaces, if you don’t need stereo, then the MVX2U is an easy choice. You could go more expensive, and get into Focusrite Scarlett Solo or Audient interfaces. No matter what, it takes a bit of figuring out and planning to collect all the pieces.

@@TheRecordist Would you, from a simplistic perspective, then recommend to get the SM7dB + the MVX2u or would it make more sense to purcahse the SM7B and a Cloudlifter and an audiointerface? I was also trying out the Shure MV7 via usb but find the soundquality lacking, found it to of a muffled sound. I was expecting more of a clear sounding sound for a 250dollar dynamice mic. Do you always edit your audio in a video editing software or is that not necessary when having a good mic and setup? Thank you very much again :)

@@lukenvellacritien well that depends on if you have any possibility of growing in the future. If you plan on having guests on a podcast or even recording anything in stereo, then getting a stereo interface makes more sense. But the SM7dB with any interface (even the Shure MVX2U) and a cable between them is about all you’ll need. Better to go SM7dB than SM7B since the Cloudlifter is built in. I never do anything to my audio when I’m using the product in question to talk into. I only use a limiter just in case I get too lively. I WILL edit my audio inside davinci when I’m not showcasing a mic or interface. Just a little EQ, noise reduction, compression, limiting, and maybe a mouth declick. But that’s only when I’m booking a mic overhead and not reviewing the thing I’m talking into. I’m the case of the Shure MVX2U video, that’s all 100% raw audio from the SM57.

I thought it was a mic at first 😆 It sounds good to me (as most things do). I think it would be best if they had the PC settings on the mobile app. If this was meant to be a 'beginners' type of solution that would be my preferred use case.

Yes. It makes me think that perhaps I used too many adapters to connect it to my phone. But Shure didn’t correct me, so maybe they haven’t built that part of the phone app yet?

@@TheRecordistProbably not. My experience with software development is that most certainly the Desktop and Mobile Apps are not the same team, and the project manager couldn't be bothered to check for feature parity.

As nice as this is, it seems very niche. An audio recorder like the Tascam X6 or X8 or any other with audio interface capability will make more sense. You're not paying that much more for a lot of added features/inputs in a still very portable footprint. This seems like such a weird device for a very niche market.
