In this video I compare some in ear monitors priced below $300. I play two different tracks and you can here the direct signal vs the sound reproduced by the in ear monitor and captured by a measurement mic.

I've used SE215s for almost 10 years at this point, I've tried Shure's more expensive models like the 425s and 535s but they were too shrill and harsh sounding to me. Yes they were more "clear" I suppose, but the 215s were just smoother sounding, and I really value that especially when you're doing a long show and you're going to be listening to them for hours n hours straight. I cannot complain at all. Also, I do not use custom tips, I use the standard medium sized foam, but I have bandmates who prefer the rubber tips, one who prefers the yellow "pool noodle foam" (for lack of a better term) tips, and they all love them. Bottom line is, you can't go wrong with the 215s, and you don't NEED to pony up for custom ear moulds in my opinion, if you don't like the "stock" tips, and you do some searching around you can certainly find ones that you'll like.

I think one of the big differences with the higher end in-ears is the clear low frequencies and improved isolation for room sounds. But that said, for many applications the 215s are plenty good

I absolutely loved my IE4’s. Used them for everyday listening, playing on stage, and even sometimes do a little pro tools mixing on them. After I lost them I got the IE40’s, they are great imo too. Sound way better than the SE215 imo

Yeah, I fixed the sub-bass to bass issues with electrostatics and put Dynamics, Punch, and Slam in electrostatics that edge the market beyond planar snd bio-drivers! Lol! I don’t believe the SBA is terribly set to give anybody a loan today lol! I don’t have 15 grand for patent and even if I did I would need a clone proxy who lives in the court system. All I can say is who wants to do business making the best audio reproduction equipment ;-)

Absolutely agree! It’s entirely wasteworthy effort stuffing two IEMs in your ears unless monitor mix annihilating when all anybody might require is pitch, dynamics, or a trap tap to keep time. You don’t require anything audiophile for an on stage environment unless jazz trio or light sparse orchestral interludes :) Cheaps be Keepsakes on a typical electronic stage. I prefer one ear open.
@DaveRat

Yeah, I know quite a few musicians that prefer one ear open to be in both the in ear and stage sound environments. Makes things less touchy.

@@DaveRat For me performing that was before all the predisposed physical misery. (1986 saw a Haunebu underground in Germany) Later, I was stupid climbing the Saw Tooth mountain range in AZ lol! To see Turkey Buzzards el naturale but perhaps see more saucer tech. and nothing seen… like there wasn’t paid stunt drivers to ensure my driving home would be interrupted.) I had been running sound for John Fiddler in Mesa then (who is an outstanding old soul bright young in spirit) I was kinda stupid chumpy then it wasn’t ego, success, or drugs, just chumped in ways of getting in my way. But yeah, like if I was in a loud Alternative Band like in KCMO I would likely go both ears either plugged or monitored. That was long ago and means nothing to anyone else lol!

The CC 10's were noticeably brighter than the others. My home studio rig starts with an HP Z820, M-Audio Delta 44 PCI audio interface, Mackie Onyx 820i mixer, Marantz Legacy Series IA 2232 SB amp, and B&W 686 bookshelf speakers.

is the original signal in stereo? if it is then its not a fare comparison as stereo can change the precieved loudness of some out of phase sounds like reverb etc.

For hi-fidelity and clarity as a track listening monitor, I found the Audix A10's to be pretty good. I suggest underrated. Loud enough and more detail than hi-fi ear buds.

Those CCAs are incredibly competent. a bit over-exaggerated in the 4-6K range but a solid second place. Audix was the best in my opinion but not by much. shure's third but not by too much and Sennheiser is dead last, far from the other pairs and not worth the price.

What is safest for ear health? Cut mids? For IEMs, you mostly need the rhythm parts, right?

As far as overears I have designed an electrostatic that has more Dynamics, Punch, Slam and Clarity than any silly cone type driver.
@DaveRat
@DaveRat 2 года назад
Electrostatics can be awesome. Though I have yet to see a pair that has good acoustic isolation so outside sound does not leak in like what pro sound engineers need and/or the sound of the headphones does not leak out and disturb people nearby. So many options with various assets and issues!

@@DaveRat I know Dave but those problems are corrected by an inner reticulated honeycomb embossed ultra thin refillable helium bay that serves as an outer cup. Eliminates both cable and yoke noises too. The drivers solution requires business interest to reveal. Some new materials put to applications and function. I am really just attempting to establish friendships again after car wreck, 10 years of surgeries, lol! Where did everybody I knew go!? Lol! But business can be very fun too. I am using a pair of Koss EL9’s that are closed back that seal very well but I built new yokes head strap from parts of other trash phones in order to do that comfortably. Actually any geometric five color boundary map can provide the closed back design near perfect backside dipole diffusion so long as the outer and central walls (CNC or embossed) are distributed by a lens concave structure. (The inner cup, then ultra thin helium reservoir, make what you will logo upon outer cup etc.

I've used 215s for years, I've always found their sound super usable, it sounds kinda "mid-rangey" in this test but I mean, consider what you'll be doing with them. You'll probably be standing on a stage with guitar amps and cymbals 3 feet from your head, you're going to WANT that mid-rangey sound. I've tried a few other things, including the higher end Shure stuff and always come back to the 215s, plus there's $99, if you destroy a set, you can buy another, I mean, 100 bucks isn't "free" but it's better than replacing something in the 400-500 dollar range.
