I forgot one important information in the video: The Beta 57A has 3-4 db more output than the SM57. For the video I matched the levels so that you can really compare the sound.
Stringmatrix is normally a double bass channel but this video will be of interest to other musicians and engineers. No EQ or compression war used, just a tiny bit of reverb (same mix on each instrument).

I agree with your summary at the end. The beta sounded more authentic and brought out the percussive punchy sounds of the bass. The shure sounded smoother- not sure I liked it as much in the solo context, but it wasn't bad at all. I appreciate how methodical you are in these comparisons. For some reason both mics made the vocals sound amateurish!

Commenting for the youtube algo-gains! Great video as always Hervé, I particularly enjoyed the singing of course.

They both sound great. Would like to hear them in a group context.

A common trick for bluegrass bass was to wrap an SM57 in a towel and put it behind the tailpiece.

Thank you for this, I have put some videos together and know how much work went into this video ... a lot! I'm trying to decide between thee two mics. I've found the SM57 to be warmer and as you said, kind of smooths it out. I've found the Beta 57A to be a more bright and it feels more of a true sound to me. I'm still deciding but you have given me good information and sound tests.

Thank you, yes, the editing is so much work! Good luck with your decision, I can't say more than I said in the video...

I liked the Beta more. For my home recordings, I switched from the 57 to the V7x because the sound felt more natural. The 57 felt harsher and also hollow in top frequencies. It can be used for talking or vocals though, but it requires a pop filter.

I also think that the SM57 has a nice, well-balanced sound which I prefered over the Beta 57 throughout your tests - with one excpetion: I didn't like the SM57 on your talking. The beta 57 has a better wind shield and more presence for your voice.

Thank you for the high quality comparisson and tasteful playing. Consider buying the $15 Shure A2WS pop filter for your SM57 for when you are speaking. It'll make a huge improvement!

Haha yes, you're absolutely right. I didn't prepare this test and didn't even check the sound... It was spontaneous.

@@stringmatrix That's some high quality production, spontaneous or otherwise. I very much enjoyed it. I'm just a little sensitive to mouth sounds. Fantastic playing and comparison.

I couldn’t hear a difference with my iPad loudspeakers 😂 I would use the SM 57 because it is the only mic I have. However, many thanks for the comparison!

SM57 ist definitely a good choice if you have only one mic!!

I prefer the sm 57 above the bèta. For double bass it has a bit warmer sound while the bèta has a bit more high and brightnes. But I do hear this difference only on the double bass recordings not on the other instruments.

Yes on some speakers/headphones it is difficult to hear the difference. I also like the warmth of the SM57 and the way it "forms" the sound, as if it was a little processed.

Sorry for mist topics question :) I have plywood bass, it’s not new, bought it few ears ago for 700$. What strings do you recommended for this type of instruments.

I could write a lot.... Maybe I will make a video to answer this question. But if you want a "normal" modern sound I would first take "the standard": Thomastik Spirocore, and I would take the light gauge. I don't use these strings because I play a lot of swing and prefer darker strings with more punch and less sustain. But that's more a "special taste". Spirocore is a good "reference" to start with, I think they are the most played strings among pizzicato players.

More body and bass in the Beta. I liked that on the last double bass recording but less on the archtop. Less wind noise w the Beta on your voice. I didn’t hear much difference in the highs.
