The black Shure SM7dB is an updated version of the SM7B, featuring a built-in preamp for a more robust output level, eliminating the need for an inline preamp. The SM7dB offers the same smooth, flat, and wide-range frequency response for music and speech that made the original a popular choice for professional audio applications. The mic's specially engineered dynamic capsule provides a smooth, polished vocal sound with a rich response in the lower frequency registers, making the mic a favorite among broadcasters and podcasters.

Just a quick note, the zoom f3 is a field recorder that is also an audio interface. It also has built in pre-amps. The cloud lifters and etc still have their place in the streaming world if you want to add plugins and compressors and other effects. That way you wouldn’t have to combat against the noise floor if your location isn’t treated.

I know the F3 is categorized as a “field recorder” but its lack of any built in mic make it more of an audio interface for on camera usage. Its small form factor and tough build lend its self to portable usage and it’s a power house for making any mic sound amazing. I stand by the fact that cloud lifters are obsolete but audio is super subjective so if you’ve been using them for X amount of years, you problem be hard pressed to get rid of them.

@@Fredo.heavyyField recorders don’t need to have built in mics. Usually, the built in mics aren’t good enough for pro audio workflows. The mix pre’s, the sound devices 8 series and the other zoom F series are great field recorders with no built in mics. Their main focus is to record in the “field”. Audio interfaces usually do not have built in recording capabilities and usually offer abilities to add plugins. The recording is done in daws and etc. Now where the cloudlifters and etc come in is if you don’t want to raise the gain too high and raise the noise floor. When you and your your gf was quiet, you heard it in this vid. A cloud lifter can help you eliminate that without trying to almost max out the field recorder’s gain then having to try to cut out the noise floor in post, which effects your overall sound. Too much gain can effect the overall sound quality even if you eq and add dynamics. The sm7b is a dark mic and is has a “broadcast” sound. It’s not for everyone’s voice, and you usually have to do quite a bit of audio processing to make sound good on your voice. For the most people though, you can just get something like a rodecaster pro ii and you’ll be fine, but for engineers and musicians, an activator will work better for their workflow because of the other stuff they’re adding to the vocals to refine it. Short answer, most consumers won’t need them but many pros still use them.

I was chasing the best mic for my voice and went through many mics. sE DCM3,V7, SM57, Rode NT1, Procaster, Broadcaster, RE20, BFL V10, and and and. I still ended up with a SM7B - and I think it’s really a tough call between this the NT1, Procaster and the RE20….now deciding which to sell 🤣

I recently went from my SM7b to a SM7db after 3 years. I love the preamp built in and now I don't need to crank the gain as much on my Rodecaster. It was a choice because I could afford to get it and figured I would save the original model as a backup. I have it set to 18db on the db version. I don't feel like it was a cash grab personally, I think the price could have been $50-$100 less though. I like it personally because for my voice etc it works quite well. Since I have my gain reduced and the Windows mic volume turned down too. I appreciate your take though, not everyone can afford or needs a Shure mic imo

Great video! I am hesitating between Shure MV7+ AND SM7dB + interface shure MVX2U (to make it USB). Which one would you recommend? I have no gears and want to do video podcasting/ youtube interviews with remote guest. I want to keep it simple but with good sound. Thank you!

I just picked up and started testing MV7+ it’s a nice upgrade and physical has a “new” windscreen to make it look more SM7B. The MV7+ sounds really good and has lost of EQ features and USB C is plug and play I’d go with that option. Only con so far is that it might be to easy to accidentally mute yourself with touch strip.

@@Fredo.heavyy Thank you so much! This is reassuring from a pro like yourself. I ordered both and will test what is easier and sounds best. It would be amazing if you could do a video comparing both. Thank you!

SM7db with built-in CL-1 is so worth it. Cheaper than a SM7B+CL1.

What about if I'm buying a mic to sing on streaming platforms. I probably need something that has auto tune and that is mobile, what would you recommend? Because i was considering SM7B

32 bit float for most uses is just as much of a cash grab, as the SM7DB. Any audio interface with an EIN of -128dBu to -129dBu and a dynamic range of 110dB or higher will work just fine. But that microphone choice is a nice troll towards the people who desperately want an SM7B/SM7DB. 😂
