@NAASASpaceFlight Folks, as a direct participant in Mission Control on both these flights, this was a pretty good review. BUT…even tho I know your focus was on the space shuttle flights itself here, I’m still kinda shocked you didn’t at least mention one critical factoid: That on STS-6, after we deployed the first IUS/TDRS, the IUS/Interim Upper Stage, two-stage booster rocket- which was VERY expensive (one reason it was never a commercially viable product)- which was supposed to place the huge TDRS satellite precisely in geosynchronous orbit orbit, failed every which way from Sunday- stranding the TDRS in a useless orbit. Then there’s an entire story as well about what happened after THAT. But, at least it deserved a mention; it was a Big Thing. -Dave Huntsman

Thanks for doing Shuttle Sunday. All the epic photos and videos saved from deletion. Listening to the three of you, i can hear the pure excitement, as if it just happened a few minutes ago. Many of us have that same energy as you and I am extremely grateful for NSF bringing these "BLASTS FROM THE PAST". Until next time........

I love the "live" Shuttle launch coverage idea! Very much looking forward to it. I agree that STS 93 would be good choice. 31 would also be interesting. Hey, do both!

They are on Space Coast Live on Sundays at 3PM ET. Unfortunately, because it's on one of our 24/7 channels there is no notification. Best best is to follow us on X or other social media for a notification. --kmr

The STS-5 crew photo they are in the inflight jacket and pants. The flights from STS-5 to 51-L were in no ex flight suits the same as what military pilots wear, just in powder blue.

Vance Brand did not fly the MMU. He was the CDR for 41-B, Bruce McCandless and Bob Stewart flew the MMUs.

@NASASpaceflight NO, Vance was NOT the first to fly the MMU; that was Bruce McCandless! - Dave Huntsman

Correct. Vance Brand was the Mission Commander on the STS41b flight when McCandless first flew the MMU.

SLS-5 happened when I was just a few months old, but I remeber loving bad weather for Florida as a kid when the Shuttle was landing because I could go out in my Palmdale, CA backyard and wait for the double sonic booms and see if I could locate the falling white brick with my eyes.

@NASASpaceFlight I was a lead NASA flight controller in Mission Control for both STS-5 and -6: Fun Story Musgrave story: On STS-6, Story did the first shuttle EVA. He was also probably the most physically fit by far of all astronauts; he tended to run marathons to relax. Anyway: I was in the main MCC room/FCR (Flight Control Room), standing near the Flight Director (John Cox) during the EVA. We were watching up on the screen as Story did the EVA, as well as watching his bio-signs on the screen in front of us. Don - the other EVA astronaut- pulse rate was, understandably, really up there during EVA- at least above 120s while doing nothing but floating, more while doing activity. But Story….his heart rate was less than mine while I’m sleeping. The Flight Director looked at that heart rate on the screen, then he turned to me and said: “Do you think we should call and wake Story up?” - Dave Huntsman

I never had any antagonism to the shuttle, but it never inspired me. I remember when Enterprise was flown over my hometown for some reason. I remember watching the first shuttle launch and landing. I remember watching Armstrong walk on the moon, and nothing compared to that. Until SpaceX. That is what has me excited again. The suttle? Not so much.
