Shuttle Tatting for Beginners - Transferring the Knot 

The best description/demonstration of shuttle tatting I've seen by far. Thank you! The larger cord & slow hand movements made this so much easier to follow. I've been limiting myself to needle tatting because I dipaired of ever being able to understand how shuttle tatting works. I think I've finally got it! 😁😘😘😘

I'm just picking up tatting again after a long hiatus, and while transferring the knot came back to me easily, I couldn't remember how to handle the thread and shuttles efficiently. I was struggling all over the place, each knot a chore, until I found your video, and now the two halves of the stitches are coming along "zip-zip!" again. Thank you!

I found this gadget (which I now know is a shuttle) at a secondhand store. I collect little odd items. I found out what it was and decided to see how it works. Having never done anything even remotely close to this, I used your video and was able to make 6 stitches. They're certainly not the best, but I did it. Thank you so much for your instructions!!! Now I have a new rabbit hole to go down. ☺️

This is one of the best beginner shuttle tatting videos I've ever seen. I love the large cord. When I learned to shuttle tat I actually used a large cord so I could see and study the mechanics of the technique and learn what was happening. Your instructions are so clear and you move slow enough that people can actually see what is happening. I also love that your work surface is so clean and clear because it allows people to concentrate on what you are doing without being distracted with a lot of stuff in the background. Thank you for sharing. :)

I have had such a hard time getting this as I couldn't get my knots right so that I could get my first rings to close. My thread would just lock and I couldn't slide the knots to close make a ring. I watched video after video and I finally found yours. I can finally slide the knots and close a ring. I can finally learn tatting now that I can do the knots properly. Thank you!!

I learned this from a book when I was about 12, and I had to make a shuttle, and it’s been years since I did this. But you explained this so clearly, I’m 50 now, but I think I will have another go, as it has come flooding back!

You give wonderful instructions and slow enough to see exactly what you are doing. I tried shuttle tatting, really wanted to do that. Every time I tried to make a ring, it would not move. I finally gave up afted about 100 times of trying. I started needle tatting. It was much easier. At least I was able to.make the rings and chains. Thank you for the instruction. I will try shuttle again.

Brilliant! You could also make a video with a chain and two colors when ch would show the transfer. This is GREAT because it shows so clearly why the knot must move and it explains the ring too. Wonderfully done!

Thank you for explaining where each loop is supposed to be in each stage of the stitch. That’s the piece I was missing.

I couldn't work out what both threads were doing and how to get the knot to flip, I was getting really frustrated trying to work out where I was going wrong, but your explanation made it so quick and easy to understand, and now it's clicked! It was much clearer for me to see, how I'm supposed to hold the thread AND the shuttle. The thick thread also made it visually clearer to me, how the thread is supposed to move over and under the hands, fingers and thread. Thank you very much!

Thank you for teaching without the burden of two separate threads. I was taught this method by a lifelong tatter years ago. When I recently purchased a DVD of instructions to brush up my skills, the method using a shuttle thread and a ball thread was giving me fits. I couldn't put my finger on why (how pun-ny) until I came across your video. Trying to keep tension this way is SO much easier. Perhaps later I'll find there are advantages to having a ball thread to contend with, but right now the only advantage I can think of would be needing less thread on the shuttle and thus fewer rewinds. My speed and stitch consistency will increase rapidly with your method, which will help me keep at it. I look forward to seeing more of your instruction... and THANK YOU AUNT RUTHIE for taking time out of your busy NS life to show your grateful US niece how to tie a knot.

Wow! Tried this decades ago with a paper tutorial before youtube, and kept making the knots on the hand cord instead of flipping the knot and putting it on the shuttle cord...I just couldn't understand how the shuttle cord was free to be pulled to close the circle!! This evening I found your tutorial and slowed it down....AHA moment....wow....so pleased I've finally understood it....and it's still like magic how the knot flops😂now I can finally make some lace!!!thank you so much!!!!💓

Thnd so much because some people do it too fast or use suck small string i couldn't tell what they were doing. I think most people that make tatting vids forget what's it like to start from the beginning... This was much more helpful

I never did this. I found a shuttle small metal one that must be vintage price on original was 29 cents by Susan Bates brand at a thrift shop. American made. Chester Conn. I was researching this to see what it was since I collect a lot of vintage things and Walla!!! Here I am. My grandmother made a lot of this type of lace in the form of doliy? which I have and use. I was always fascinated with lace and how much time and intricate it is. Love lacy table cloths too. Feels like home to me more so when I have them out. Great video explanation. Thank you. It is amazing how it is made.

Now I just pull until the shuttle thread straightens completely and I know it has happened. I have been needle tatting for ages but just could not transfer the knot when trying to shuttle tat.

This is the best video that I have ever seen to show the double stitch with a shuttle. I still cannot do shuttle tatting but this video may help. I at least understand the process now. This tutorial is the best one I've seen. I think a lot of well-willing people making tatting videos tend to overlook how something that seems so simple to them can be difficult for beginners to follow. Like until now I thought people were making whole loops when they did the under-part. So whenever I tried it, I kept making knots and not loops... Thanks! 😃
