For several years (pre Pandemic) I worked for a local yarn/needlepoint/cross stitch shop. At least once a year we would have a customer ask about tatting. I’ll be letting the shop owner know about your channel!
Thank you. The finishing of the ends is what I was looking for and you showed it beautifully. The whole tutorial was nice and slowly shown so it was easy to follow.
Thanks for this video. You are a great teacher. My mother had a shuttle, but she didn't know how to do it. Watching this video, I've learned it quickly. The way you teach is awesome. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ From Sri Lanka
THIS IS AMAZING! I got my hands on a shuttle 2 days ago, and now thanks to you and this video, I have a full creation to gift to my gram for Christmas! Thank you so much!
I inherited my grandmother's crochet hooks and tatting shuttles. I purchased several beginning tatting books, but I couldn't figure it out. Thank you for making the movement so exaggerated and simple. You said that beginners need to practice double stitches to get muscle memory, and I will try again. I am able to follow crochet patterns. Are tatting patterns just as easy to follow ?
Thank you for finally showing in minute detail how to hold the thread (both shuttle and spool) in hands. Other videos made me "dizzy" trying to figure out what the threads were doing, and the hands kept "getting in the way." I was completely quiet before and after your first double but when you did it, my eureka moment occurred with joyful noise. Thank you from the bottom of my crafter heart! ❤❤❤
The commentery tips along the way are so helpful for beginners. This way I have the chance to learn tatting in depth through a single pattern. I might have to check your other videos too! Have a nice day, continue doing what you love!
I'm totally mesmerised and confused watching you. 😂🤦♀️ I've never heard of this tatting and just stumbled on to it here. The final finish work looks absolutely amazing.
The BEST tutorial ever!!!! Thank you 🥰 I finally feel that I can put to use the 7 suttles (some very diffferent than used on this videos) and dozens of DMC and other crochet thread from 20 - 80 (very fine) weights! Marilee, I hope you read this, but you are a wonderful teacher, with a very calm and kind voice and let me add as well a wonderful video equipament that help so much visual learners like myself - wishing you all the best! 🤗🤗❤❤!!!
Hi Marilee, I tried your motif with the 5 rings and 5 chains and it looks beautiful. Then I decided to try and make a motif with 8 rings and 8 chains and it came out beautifully, so then I made another one with 8 rings and I joined the chain picot to the first motifs picot on the chain and again the chain picot to the first motifs chain picot and now I can keep on joining motifs to make a runner for table , or a tray cloth. Thank you so much for teaching us, may you be truly blessed. Valmai
Dear Ms. Rockley, Thank you for posting this video. It really inspires interest in tatting, builds confidence in new practitioners to the art, and is detailed, well-paced and beautifully done. Thank you for taking the time to post this helpful resource and sharing your gift and talent with us. Edward Lieberman
I have alway wanted to shuttle tat. I’ve tatted with a needle using different size threads. Your video is the first one that I’ve ever watched that makes me feel I might be able to do it. The best tutorial ever. Thank you so much. Now, let me go find my shuttle. ☺️
I found this extremely helpful for learning to tat thank you so much! I made quite a few mistakes along the way, but I'm looking forward to progressing on this!
Thank you so much for this vid. I made one in size 10 lizbeth purple splendor as my third piece of tatting (did a ring then a butterfly before this). Took 2 hrs but it's been fun learning 🙂💜
Cadena 7-7. Ate, oculte los extremos y corte.
Marilee, your explanation is perrrfect! It's so clear for the beginner that anyone will be able to learn the technique! Thank you very much for your generosity and time spent on our behalf! Best regards from Brazil, wishing you a Very Happy New Year! ❤
thanks! I just found about 1 yard of tatted trim that uses this basic motif (but with a different pattern of picots). Your instructions are very clear and I'm excited to try to learn tatting and recreate this motif. It's beautiful.
loved your simple tutorial. I saw my mom tatting 30 yrs ago and now she doesn’t make it anymore so I thought I would like to continue this craft and was so thrilled to see that it’s still there. Where did you buy this tatting tool from or which brand? There are so many and I am confused which one to buy….
I taught myself to Tat with a needle years ago but didn't continue so I forgot basically everything! I just saw you on Craftsy with a shuttle, that I've always wanting to learn! Thank you for making this old woman happy!🌹
I taught myself 35 years ago from a booklet. I haven't done much since those first few years but decided to pick it back up. Your video and instructions are great! Thanks!
Thank you for this very clear and easy to follow tutorial! I just made my first shuttle tatted motif with your guidance and I couldn't be more pleased. :)
Всем, здравствуйте! Спасибо большое за подробное видео. Я не знаю Английский но, я смотрю за движениями рук. У других просто не понятно, делают быстро .
Marilee 👏, I just finished my first SHUTTLE TATTED motif. It is this pattern. Thanks to the way you demonstrate and teach. You helped me get over the fear of the thread and to be able to manipulate it. That helped me so much! Tysm!
Is this not macrome? With the exception of the shuttle, this reminds me of something my dad taught my sister how to do, it was like a cross between scoubidou and macrome. I think my grandmother taught me needle tatting but I thought it was some kind of miniature crochet.
The thread for tatting needs to be very smooth, so that the double stitches slide easily on it. I personally like Lizbeth or DMC Cordonnet Special, but any smooth crochet cotton should work well for tatting.
For years I struggled to flip the thread, no videos or tutorials could help me. Finally your video came as a saviour. You mentioned the right pulls and releases and tensions of the strings, and voila all my mistakes got solved and now I can tat motifs in one go.
Thank you so much for the close camera~! I'm just learning and couldn't figure out joining until now. I've been making the stitches on the SHUTTLE string, not the ring string. No wonder I couldn't understand my second loops weren't closing!
A larger thread is easier to see when learning. I'd say a size 10, or a size 5 or 3 (the smaller the number, the thicker the thread). A variegated or multicolor thread is great because it helps to see how the stitches are forming. Even using 2 different solid colors will help to see if the stitches are forming correctly.
I am an experienced needle tatter but could never get the hang of shuttle tatting. Thank you, your video is the first on our of many that are explained well. Ty. Ty. Ty
I have been knitting and crocheting since I was a kid and always wanted to know how to do tatting. Ow with yiutube , there is no excuse not to kearn! Thanks for a great videol
I've tried 3 times so far to make the ring, and when I try to close it by pulling the yarn, nothing slides! Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? I follow your tutorial step by step. Thanks for posting.
The problem is that one or more of the stitches have not “flipped” or transferred, from the shuttle thread to the thread held on your hand. It’s very common for beginners to really not notice what is happening with the transfer of the stitch (loop) from one thread to the other. Do try again! Eventually it will make sense, and then become automatic (like riding a bike).
@@MarileeRockley You are absolutely right! It took me 3 whole hours to figure it last night. Thank you for taking the time to reply and thank you for your videos!
I stumbled across this video today while watching politics videos but since my childhood I have been trying to learn this but I couldn't now happy I can learn through this video now i am 55
The stitch that forms the picot becomes the first stitch fot the next pattern - you have solved the confusion in my mind. I always wondered why there were less number of stitches after the picot. Thanks for the information.
Sounds like one or more of the double stitches have not “flipped” or transferred to the other thread. Look to be sure that the stitches are being formed from the thread on your hand, and slide on the thread coming from the shuttle.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge I appreciate the way you teach and also have a clear view with your camera of what you’re teaching this is the first time I have seen your video I’m looking forward to see more from you I enjoyed watching you work . Thank you
Gosh you make it look so easy got my shuttle but not tried it yet your video makes it look so easy . Watching videos first and yours is explained so slowly so I can follow it wish me luck x
I find it very strange the way you work... always saw the shuttle go in and out without turning it around. Maybe it's just my perseption but I find it very difficult, therefore I prefer to use the most common style. ❤
Yes, that’s correct, I do tat differently than the more common style of shuttle tatting. It’s because I was self taught, learning from books in the 1970s. The Internet didn’t exist yet and I didn’t know any people who did tatting. So my style looks different, but the action of the threads is the same. Do what is comfortable for you, and have fun!🥰
