Saw these guys play in 1986 with David Lee Roth, for the “Eat ‘em & smile” tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto Canada, that band was and still is the best band that I have ever seen and I’m 52 now. Gregg Bissonette was and still is a stellar drummer , too bad he wasn’t there.
Yeah, I just gave EE&Smile, and Skyscraper a revisit in the last couple days. I was a teenager when those were released, and I had both on cassette. Thinking about how much anticipation there was when Dave put that band together, and wondering how their first album would be received by fans had to be insane. At the time, he left one of the greatest rock bands, and turned around with his new outfit, releasing one hell of a record. Even with all the turmoil & drama, both bands came out swinging, and put out two of my all time favorites (5150 from VH).
I have Billy as Number 1 on my Favorite Bass players video. fan since 1986, My only question to them is when they do these jams several times WHY don't they have Greg Bisonett jam with them? I Know they did once on that " almost DLR Reunion show"
Ya well they ARE masters whaddya talkin about? Master isn’t judged by what style “ you” like. 😂. Steve vai is like joined at the hip with guitar. That’s a master of the instrument like big time. I don’t even like all his stylings but to not know he IS a master is to not know what you’re talking about. Sorry
@@jeffreyp1855Robert Judd, cast as “Old Scratch”, is my favorite movie version of the Devil. Well, maybe just the name. His high-pitched laugh when he thinks Jack Butler has won, always gets me.😂
ByTor and the Snow Dog. I guess this is the Eat em and Smile Tour Solo section, Mike Portnoy on Drums, Let's have a round of applause for the guy who invented cameras.
Steve Vai is an amazing player but when I see people tapping guitar like this they always seem to be saying "Look I can do this too" and it reminds me I miss EVH!
It’s a TECNIQUE. It’s like saying “he’s using an assembly line just like Henry ford” cmon man. He’s not the first guy to abuse a whammy bar either but no one revered did it first so…
The tapping thing has gotten so over done at this point though. Bands like Polyphia playing the most soulless, color by numbers music possible and thinking if they play a shitty song really fast and technically well it will be good. Mind you, these dudes were some of the first. I got no beef with Vai or Sheehan, just saying that what they spawned really sucks. It’s a common thing: Rage Against the Machine spawned an entire awful fucking genre of music while they themselves weren’t that terrible.
Yes these guys were some of the first. I used to see Billy’s band Talas in bars and parks all the time as a kid in the mid to late 70s, and he always did a solo during their shows and he was always tapping. It was his thing. His bass solos were crazy. Just amazing the sounds he got out of The Wife. Then EVH came along and everyone said no one’s ever tapped like that before. Maybe not on guitar I’m not certain on that but on bass Billy was already tapping by the time EVH became widely known. So he has every right to do that. He was one of the pioneers of it. Not sure when Eddie or Vai started doing it. I think it’s just another tool. Sometimes it is over done sometimes it appropriate. Depends on the song and who’s doing it.
@@Tyrannosaurine Being "soulless" is subjective, but I strugle to see how Polyphia can be considered "color by numbers". Their style is pretty distinct (at least before eveyone started doing it). At least they're trying something new. Without people like them we would still be listening to Chuck Berry clones. And I really hate this kind of argument; people will pretend they don't care how fast someone can play, then use that as the first argument when criticizing their music. It's equivalent to saying technicality is a negative point, not that it doesn't matter.
John was a great player through and through, but that dude was a tone wizard. I remember the first time I heard the solo from "IsThis Love" I was blown away.
It's time for Steve to shave his hair off a'la Joe Satriani. Edit, the former flowing locks have taken a turn, he looks like Kronos. 🤣😂 No hate, I love the guy.... but that hair
