For well over 60 years I have enjoyed the music of Sibelius and Brahms and will continue to do so to my last breath.............these for me are the two greats

This music is so evocative, so natural, so emotional in both straight and mysterious way... Fabulous! Wonderful! Music of true master, who had close connection with nature and exactly knows, what does it mean to be alone... Thanks very much for this recording, because it's exceptional. Clarity and warmth of sound are its' main qualities. Bravissimo for orchestra players! Obviously Segerstams interpretation is magical!

Sibelius is probably the greatest symphonic composer since Beethoven. The richness and light he brings into music is unrivaled. Sibelius has been a permanent fixture in my head for 25 years. It does take a lot of thought and musical understanding to interpret and perform this properly. This is fantastic.

Brahms wasn't so bad either...

Exaggerating a bit perhaps? After Beethoven came Schubert, Bruckner, Mahler, Richard Strauss, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, besides Schumann and Brahms, who like Beethoven were a bit clumsier in their orchestrations. But Sibelius has that special force and great sense of clarity in all his music, not forgetting the great sense of evocative narration.

Interesting, then you must not have heard of Liszt's Faust & Dante Symphonies or his symphonic poems, which were groundbreaking, or Tchaikovsky or Saint-Saens, Dvorak, Debussy, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Casella, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rimsky Korsakov, Khachaturian, etc....................

I remember posting something about how....that once I began with the symphonies...that I only started with the first one, and before I knew it...I was listening to the last one...something of which I have never done before, and probably won't for remainder of my days, and, oh...here I am listening to his other works...only to find myself in that exact same state which I was in when I first started listening to his symphonies.... THANK YOU!!!...

Or, a more interesting case, since music has become so popular while the piece it should serve is no longer represented: Bizet's L'Arlésienne.
@gerardbegni2806

Yes, you are right, but what survives in both cases is orchestral suites and not the stage music itself. In addition, in the Bizet's case, it is a splendid orchestration by Ernest Guiraud. The stage music was written for a small rnsemble (in whixh there was the famous saxophone). I had the opportunity to listen to that original version.

I particuler in this music, "the storm" is particularly impressive and gives a vision of the symphonic orchestra of Sibeluis that is not common.
@jacquesferland1746

If you're interested in how Sibelius conceived the music to match Shakespeare's play, as that play unfolded, you shouldn't listen to the suites. These suites not only eliminate some of the music segments (there are 36 parts in all), but they do not place these segments in their proper order (the Oak Tree is part no. 9, not part no. 1. Like nearly all incidental music on The Tempest since the late 17th century, the Storm needs to be played early, either in the introduction or immediately thereafter. My point is that the suites obscure the play they were composed to illuminate! The first full recording of this incidental music was done by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Opera Chorus under the direction of Osmo Vanska, in 1993. The label is BIS. The music lasts for just under 67 minutes. And, yes, it begins with "The Ship Sinks Beneath the Waves." This version has 25 minutes less music!

I have this recording, but what is owned by the BIS label can not be shared on RU-vid.

I used to have the most viewed RU-vid video of the Vänskä integral version posted on my channel, but it has now been years since they took it down. At the time I was an enthusiastic teenager posting whatever music I was discovering myself. I came here because I recognized Sibelius' melodies on the soundtrack of an Italian documentary on the Colonna family, but thought the interpretation was significantly different from what I remembered.
@mateuszfandri8086
@mateuszfandri8086 4 года назад
Please consider, that both suites are Sibelius own compilations of what he wrote himself for the theatre. So Sibelius, like other composers, decided himself, how to reorganize music from one form to another and there must be strong musical reasons, why he did this in that particular way. It would be wise, to judge this music in both ways. One is that You propose and one is that proposed by Sibelius own taste in other musical form.

It's not nice for Sir Thomas Beecham, but I have to say that I much prefer this version to his. It may partly be due to the recording conditions, but Segerstam seems to capture the meaning of the work much more than Beecham in this case. Especially for the Storm, which is impressively evocative here. This being said, once one has heard the storm from (the almost contemporary) Tapiola...

Finlandia is, in my opinion, one of his weakest symphonic pieces. His masterpiece is probably either Tapiola or the 7th symphony.

I have to say I become increasingly irritated with comments like "this sounds like this" or "reminds me of that" This and every other piece on You Tube is written by the composer as stated and should be judged against their own works and not compared to others. Also I'm fed up with questions about the pictures. For God's sake this is about music not art.

With this encouragement, I think I'll start using simple white papers as images for the songs. It will be much easier.
