Siblings are embedded in the human psyche as they are in life. Even if one lacks siblings, there is ready access to them through friends, fairy tales, myths, and scripture. All feature multiple experiences and examples of sibling solidarity and siblings as shadow carriers. Birth order, sex, temperament, and the quality of parental presence play a part in constellating the intense polarities of sibling relationships: competition and cooperation, admiration and envy, hierarchy and partnership, aggression and intimacy. We often carry the dynamics of early sibling relationships into adult life and project them onto individuals, work teams or social groups. Jung used the alchemical image of the soror mystica and the adept to represent a relational ideal, whether externally between self and other or internally between ego and unconscious. Each must have a respectful and equal say, from collaboration to confrontation.
HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"In my dream, I visited a pet shop to buy a snake. I had my dog with me. I looked around the store and couldn't find any reptiles, so I asked the staff and one of the employees told me they kept them in a separate room. He had no face and reminded me of a jailer as he carried a bunch of keys with him. The old wooden door we approached didn't match the rest of the store, which was very modern, friendly and light. As he unlocked the door, my dog tried to get in with us but I told her to wait outside. The room on the other side seemed to have no ceiling or visible end and was more like a dungeon or cave. On the right hand side from the door there was a wooden outdoor rabbit cage with six compartments. It was too dark to see the animals but I could hear some sizzling and strangely humming noises and saw that all of their skins had different patterns in black and white. The man asked me if I wanted to hold one and before I could say anything he opened one of the boxes and gave me a smaller snake. It felt warm and lively in my hands and I enjoyed holding it. I couldn't see its head, so I tried to get a closer look and as I held it closer to my face it started biting my hand a couple of times though it didn't really hurt and even if it did strike before every bite they felt more like it was just nibbling a bit. The man asked me if I was okay and I laughed and told him that I was not afraid of snakes. I handed it back to him and decided that I didn't really need a snake as a pet. As I opened the door to get back, my dog was excited to see me and I petted her for a while at the threshold. Through the open door some bright light fell on the cage and I looked back and finally got a closer look at the snakes. They were all sleeping and still making humming sounds, rolled up as snakes do but their heads looked like those of rabbits with no ears."

Just wanted to say that this is a great podcast, and though there seem to be small numbers listening (both a surprise and not a surprise), keep it up! Its somewhat rare to get trained jungian analyst talking about things so candidly.

Some families have a black sheep, mine had a herd! Jung's emphasis on oppositional tension has equipped me with ability to embrace e pluribus unum with a grateful heart. Thanks for the fleshing out of a storyline esp pertinent for a middle sib.

My relationship with my sister is fraught with unspoken childhood traumas. Whenever I have tried to bring up what we went through together, she never remembers or really wants to talk about anything. I moved 1000 miles away from my family because I have lived a life devoted to individuation and wholesome self-sharing in a family who is hell bent on denial, repression and projections. When I heard Deb talk about how in healthy relationships, you don't have to worry about other people breaking, I could only feel sadness for the sister who has withdrawn into a fantasy world, hiding her wounds behind religious fundamentalism and who idolizes me in her fantasy projections. I've thought of breaking off any contact with any of my family because of the constant seduction of being enmeshed by people who still treat me like I'm twelve. "I love you so very much", she gushes, while knowing nothing about me. Big yuck factor.

Re: the dream. Love the imagery & pondering. I also thought of issues of loyalty, motherhood. & fututure aspirations of the dreamer.

As the youngest of 3(boths inglings being sisters), about 6 years from the middle sibling, I most certainly blame them for certain things and it's justified. I can forgive some of the things that happened when they were teenagers, but not the things that took place in their 20s, 30s and even now, in their 40s. They both had children at young ages, when I was still in need of my parents, but their selfishness and immaturity stole the parental guidance I should have had away from me. They more or less chose not to take the responsibility of having children seriously and passed it off to my parents by always leaving them with us for various lengths of time over several years. To this day, the middle sibling doesn't have her youngest living with her, but with my parents. To some degree, I put some blame on them too, but they did what was necessary to make sure their grandchildren were taken care of. Even after all these years, they don't seem to recognize what they did, how wrong it was and how it impacted everyone else. They just did whatever they wanted, with no regard for anyone else.

Hello from Greece. These podcasts are very interesting and enlightening. Thank you. Could you address the case of when there is an almost 10 year defference between siblings?

From the dream: Helpful to learn of rabbit symbol given I've always been attracted to them, and had a problematic relationship with my mother! I recall holding a rabbit while standing up to my mother as a young adult asserting my sexual liberation!
