This species was first described by Linnaeus in the 10th edition of his Systema naturae (1758) as Falco gentilis.[5]
It is a widespread species that inhabits many of the temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The northern goshawk is the only species in the genus Accipiter found in both Eurasia and North America. It may have the second widest distribution of any true member of the family Accipitridae,
