Nymphia doing Grace Jones (who’s famously flat chested) without a breast plate is the FIRST time this season you’re complaining about boy chest Monet…. When so many of the other girls have been doing the same thing and it looks terrible. At least with Nymphia’s look the no breastplate made sense
As a Hispanic, the way I do not understand the Nymphia outrage when basically every Puerto Rican queen has been pushed to do the "Haha, listen to her accent!" thing. Ru has literally had queens repeat phrases while she just laughs at their accent when they aren't fluent in English. And most of us didn't even get mad about that even though that was actually out of pocket. Nymphia has an accent, if she wants to play it up, why is there suddenly a double standard? It's Manila all over again, the selective outrage.
Do y'all remember how mad the judges got at Plastique for the Asian accent in s11? The puerto rican queens were always pushed to have spicy Latina characters. They had no problem when Symone did that voice every season. But actual Asian born queens aren't allowed to do an accent
@@MsLizzieGurl PR WERENT PUSHED TO DO ANYTHING. Bffr. Pr girls were themselves THEY LAUGH AT THEM FOR SPEAKING W ACCENTS THAT THEY CANT CHANGE. NO LATINA GIRL IS PUSHED TO BE SPICY LATINA WHATEVER THAT MEANS….
They’re giving Sapphira that Jaida Essence Hall edit, won the first episode, didn’t hear from her for half the season, and only NOW they wanna acknowledge she’s been killing it the whole time
I doubt Sapphira is getting the Jaida Essence Hall edit. Jaida won during the height of the BLM / George Floyd outrage, and at the time Drag Race was being accused of mostly only crowning white queens for some time... that's why Jaida was crowned and not Gigi Goode (even though Gigi trounced her for all intents and purposes), and lowkey why Monet was crowned alongside Trinity, otherwise there would've only been 4 white queens in the Drag Race Hall of Fame (Chad, Alaska, Trixie and Trinity, and before you say Trixie is a quarter native American, she presents as white, 100% Caucasian, nothing about her reads as diverse). I love Monet more than anyone, but she didn't exactly dominate AS4. Anyhow, that's just to say that they don't need to give Sapphira the Jaida edit, she's currently the most well-rounded queen on the show, and she has one of the best track records in this season. She's also very likable, even if she doesn't have the flashiest personality in the cast, she's got the goods, which is more than I can say for some of the other queens.
@Dan3043 Reducing both Monet and Jaida's wins to race is quite close minded in my opinion, just because a white queen didn't win doesn't mean that a black queen was handed the win on a silver platter. Both Jaida and Monet did really well in their seasons, I think both wins were justified , they didnt need BLM or anything else as a justification to win
@@bstep518 I beg to differ, imo neither one was the front-runner in their respective season. And in Jaida's case, I believe that Gigi trounced her, and I use that word because she wasn't just edged out, she was demolished by Gigi's performance throughout the season. Now, it should go without saying that this is very subjective, but IMO, there's a reason why there's only ever been 1 season where 2 queens were crowned the winners. I believe that they couldn't justify not giving Trinity the crown because of her performance, but they needed to show support for the BLM movement and address the unrest. Do I need to remind you that at that time there were protests every week all across the US for what seemed to be months on end? But like I said, it's very subjective, because imo Monét deserved to win All-Stars 7, and that's considered to be a hot take. I believe that throughout the competition Monet did better than Jinkx and there were times where she was robbed, just like Raja was robbed a couple of episodes. So I don't have a problem with Monet winning AS4, not only because she's my favourite queen (well, Monet and Bob are, hands down) but because in AS7 Monét proved that Trinity ain't got nothing on her. But even so, I must play the Devil's Advocate and wonder whether Monét would've been crown as the winner of AS4 if at that time Drag Race hadn't been repeatedly accused of mistreating queens of colour (what with the edits, and the recent crownings) and the social unrest brought about the George Floyd tragedy wasn't gaining so much traction.
A lot of Nymphias' drag reminds me of the connections between surrealism and anthropology. Her constant use of yellow and bananas (which people find tiring), as well as her use of accents in comedy that have made white people in the room (Dawn) uncomfortable, even if it's something born from their own Western colonial culture. This, to me, was further reinforced by her nods to Josephine Baker and Grace Jones. It's a loaded topic lol but very interesting if anyone wants to dive into it.
the judges talking about nymphia’s fake accent while the show refuses to acknowledge that the “banana yellow” thing is CLEARLY about the yellow peril is crazy, like, mhya can make up a character just to act like a “ghetto” stereotype on snatch game but nymphia can’t do an asian stereotype?😭
Naomi brings up a GREAT point: WHY is it ALWAYS ok for a black person to be ghetto, but it's not okay for an Asian to be stereotypically Asian????? Make that double standard make sense....
Monet counting Nymphia’s 2 wins (one being the challenge she won WITH Mhiya, Geneva and Megami) but not counting it for Mhiya herself is WILD. All in a spawn of 15 seconds. Crazy.
I get what she means though. Mhiya hasn't stood out even when she won. Nymphia has more personality and better drag so her wins especially that design challenge win was a spotlight moment
Dawn and mhi’ya messed up by making mhi’ya be serious. She should have been a mess the whole time. She can’t talk so make that into a joke. “Queens have anger issues, so don’t be surprised when they flip out” and then Mhi’ya gets angry, does a read, then actually start flipping. She’s good a physical comedy so do that
Yeah, Mhi'ya should've been the said messy dangerous drag queen in the workplace, like a specimen in Dawn's little lab presentation or something. And whenever Dawn gives any examples Mhi'ya would doo THE THING. Kind of like Sapphira with "what's up bro" in the last group
Monet had some wild ass opinions this episode. Saying that Raven should've won Season 2, liking Dawn's look, saying that Nymphia and M'hiya's group win doesn't count (she says as she got crowned with Trinity as a duo), just crazy.
Yeah, it's the second time it was they referenced the completely wrong country 😭 first Serbia & Russia and now Thailand & Taiwan, it's giving (US-)American education 😮💨 (tbh I also didn't live for how Monet discredited ppl correcting her regarding Serbia, it would've been fine to just say "Yeah, my bad, got it mixed up")
im so glad Monet thought Plane's "reads" towards Dawn was bad. Because it was, but many fans on youtube were LIVING for it and acting like it was the best thing? Like she was just offended what do you mean
Dawn just laughing it off showed how deeply unserious that was but these Plane fans are deeply disturbed. Like I've really come around on Plane now that she is communicating a bit better but she has attracted the worst fans this season.
People that doesn’t understand the difference between reading and just saying mean stuff. But yeah Plane reads at Dawn were really meeh… also I LOOOVE when someone says like I’m not mad/plocked/bitter and a second later they are doing and saying the most bitter and petty kind of stuff (cut to Q on the sneak peek of this week episode)
I love how you say "plane fans" as if everyone that likes PJ is crazy lmao Those people are just dumb that "read" was obviousely not serious at all and Dawn and PJ were just making tv
I think even when Sapphira wasn't winning she was still getting a winner edit. She'd still have a little storyline about helping the others or being the bigger person or generally just carrying the group through tough moments. I will genuinely be surprised if Sapphira doesn't win.
I think they don't have a choice, her whoel aura screams Queen, even if she doesn't win the challenge. It's very hard to give someone like Sapphira a crazy edit, because she is that girl. The epitome of they can't use what you don't give them.
So glad someone is finally bringing up this blaccent. The worst part of it is that it mostly comes out in confrontational moments or when she's "trying" to read someone.
I agreed with everything they said but then felt like I got whiplash when they immediately pivoted to talking about how Raven is one of their favorite queens ever lol
Sibling Watchery clocked the "acting stupid" trend and the hypocrisy of them encouraging acting "ghetto" with a heavy blaccent because it is "trendy, but criticizing an asian person for doing a stereotypical character based on their heritage. Tea. About Plane Jane responding to Q's status: I think "Mawma, kudos for saying that. For spilling" is just a funny string of words even without context, but it was one of those "I feel bad for laughing at this, but it was lowkey funny" moments even if it is not the intention. Plane Jane just talks like that but this clip without context is just 💀 like no one before probably said those words to someone who discloses their HIV status. I guess some fans are just projecting it on Plane Jane because they found it funny and feel bad about it. Just a guess though.
That "let's look at some clips" moment of Plane Jane and Q's presentation, that literally happens at the Trixie and Katya live show during Katya's segment
Nymphia Wind name in Chinese is a play on word with "wild/wind" , so wild is basically going banana. Also she called herself the Banana Budha that's explain her obsession's with banana
About Plane's response to Q, I don't think people are saying Plane is disingenuous, it's just that it ended up being phrase in a really funny an meme-y way once you look at it out of context. It's a bit like "me as a drag queen when I don't know what to say about a serious subject"
i like mhi’ya a lot, but since learning that she’s 34 i’m kind of baffled at how many strange beginner choices she made ! (like literally googling DragCon 1980?) i thought she was maybe 24 with not that much drag experience given how many drag taboos she crossed throughout the season
ppl think that the look might’ve been one of the ones her designer didn’t give her. a lot of her other looks were pretty polished like the signature color one so this one made sense to be one of the ones that was made on a whim.
i feel like mhiya is the type of person that get into the zone. When she is dancing and performing she is locked in and forget everything else. While off the stage and other challenges she revert back to her shy personality. Which is not a bad thing, kinda admirable that she just get into the zone when she lyp sync
Naomi always a great guest, love hearing her opinions on drag race she has such a detail focused mind. Hoping for another season 8 top 3 reunion for the finale as someone suggested on Patreon, they should totally bring Kim and Naomi like the first epsiode.
I don’t like when anyone does the Blaccent, regardless of race. But that’s just my preference…it seems like most people don’t actually talk like that. (Ru and Michelle do the Blaccent all the time, with Michelle doing it more.)
So many countless queens doing a blaccent and nobody says a thing. Them laughing at jessica wilds accent which is not exaggerated for jokes countless times. Selective outrage.
intellectual babydoll listener here, someone very invested in conversations about cultural appropriation, power dynamics, stereotypes, prejudice, and representation, and also someone who lived for years in taiwan: nymphia's accent was completely fine. stereotypes are a neutral concept: they can be used in positive or negative ways, depending on the content, context, and implications. for example, there is a stereotype that adorable&artsy pixie girls like me are all super warm and open and nice, and even though i happen to be, that still is a stereotype that clearly does not describe the disposition of everyone who looks like me. in a similar fashion, cultural appropriation is also a neutral concept, dependent on content, context, and implications, but since nymphia is taiwanese, i don't think that applies here. prejudice, on the other hand, describes a *feeling,* an attitude, toward a group of people based upon stereotypes that is always negative. perhaps an incel would have a prejudice against adorable artsy girls like me because they resent our "pretty privilege" and how we "can have whatever or whomever we want whenever we want" and thus have a negative feeling about people like me. luckily, i don't think prejudice was at hand at all in this episode, either. =) as someone who worked with taiwanese kids and teens and co-teachers for four years, i was *elated* to hear nymphia's accent. it brought me back *so* hard. i really could picture all the people i loved there, picture the way we would talk and yell and be crazy, and it really did sound like what nymphia gave in many ways. i'm so homesick for taiwan sometimes, so watching nymphia has been such a treasure, and this accent just SENT me there, man. it was incredible. it's her culture, it's her stereotype, and stereotypes do not necessitate prejudice even though they *can* be a risk factor for prejudice if used in a shitty fashion. nymphia has been representing her culture in *so* many beautiful and entertaining ways this season, and this was just another flavor of that.
this is a personal question but what state are you from? i feel like some states do (like florida, which is where Morphine lived during high school) and others dont
i do not understand why folks want plane jane to win but thats me and im happy yall clocking Q and those jokes weren't even Q's lmaoooo everyone makes those same jokes
Btw nymphias brand is yellow because of the racist people who say Asians are yellow skinned. She’s kinda owning yellow so you can’t use it against her. Kinda fierce idc
I recommend googling 80s drag con and looking at the first photo because I cannot stop laughing thinking of mhi’ya going from this as her reference photo. I’m dead 😅
@ little alt them in drag for the first time is wild and 🎯🎯🎯🎯 can we not overlook those two pink party city wigs out the bag stuck together and passed off as a Mohawk!????please
I’m sorry I love you Monet and 90% agree with you but saying Raven should have won season 2 is giving delusional!! Tyra was the clear winner!!! And Raven hosting drag race is definitely a no go I would not watch at all!!! Nothing against her I just think her personality is dry and crispy!!!
I’m just gonna say that all people that says that Dawn last week’s look was bad is because they dont have the correct references INCLUDING NAOMI. It was giving CLAMP all the way it was literally like a Card Captor creature. Idk I loved it
Mia said she was moved by spirit and the judges knew she was doing a praise dance, and that the singer takes her shoes off in the music video- So it made sense in that context.
21:28 I know Bob keeps saying Raven will replace Ru but I just don’t see that. Her sense of humor is way too pointed for fans to be okay with that. Michele was harsh toward Adore once and people still remember that. So I can’t even imagine how they’d react to Raven’s critiques. I actually think Raja would be an excellent successor to Ru.
This, also back when it was RUMORED Raven's hook up app profiles specified "no dinge, no rice" in her preferences. . . I'd be happy to never hear of her again.
I did not pick up on Q's Blackcent because I keep thinking of Trinity the Tuck when she speaks. Is it me or does Q sound like Trinity? If so, does Trinity do a Blackcent?
Trinity has just a southern Alabama accent that she always speaks with. Never puts on an accent and takes it off. Q on the other hand, one minute she’s a normal white girl from the Midwest, and the next she’s “oooh gurlll 💅🏾 “ Just my thought idk
I think it's really nice how Naomi and Derrick have a good friendship off the show, considering how cutthroat it was between them on Derrick's final episode or two of Season 8.
