The director does a great job of making the audience think that Kate is the protagonist in this movie, but in the end you realize it was a trick... it was really Alejandro. Kate was just a throw away caricature meant to distract you away from the real story. It was a brilliant technique.

@LazloHo

The final scene is my favorite. It's subtle and brilliant. Alejandro IS a good guy. Maybe he's an anti-hero, but he's on the side of the angels. The last scene, where he holds the gun on her to get the signature, is part of that. If he was bad, he could have just killed her. He could have let her hang herself, and ruin her own career, by picking a fight that she wouldn't win (her bosses knew, they wanted that kind of victory). He knew that her morals were going to get in the way, though, and so he gave her an out. By holding the gun on her, he 'forced' her to sign it, and gave her the out she needed to say that she'd still done the right thing. She only signed because she was forced, right?
@ogchamps1

If you blow away 2 innocent children and their mother your not a good guy.
@LazloHo
@LazloHo 2 месяца назад
@@ogchamps1 I said he was an an anti-hero. If you're too reductive about it, you are left with either of good or bad and good guys fight bad guys. If Alejandro isn't a good guy, it means the cartel leader that he killed is the good guy. That clearly doesn't work. It's a good thing we have that additional distinction of the anti-hero, eh? But none of that detracts from the larger point I was making. With her, he was the good guy. At the end of the film, he was taking the time to do something good for her. He had no selfish incentive to do that, he didn't need to do it. Since it was a good act, and not selfishly motivated, that makes him a good guy.
@sertu1462
@sertu1462 Месяц назад
I think that looking for a good guy is kinda missing the point of the movie. Alejandro is neither good nor bad. He has his own motive, vengeance. Some of the things he does for that goal are ultimately good, some are bad. It doesn't matter. The "greater good" isn't really his concern. It wasn't about giving her an out either, he needed that signiture and he was threatening her in order ot get that. That threat clearly wasn't a bluff. And don't tell me he's working for the "angels" when it's US drug policy is the very thing that birthed all of this cartel violence in the first place. Every time they take out a drug lord, it creates a power vacuum that other drug organisations fight over. You literally see it in the scene where the guard shows Kate the "fireworks" after they arrest some high ranking cartel guy. The harder they enforce drug laws, the more profiteable the drug trade becomes due to the increased risk. Higher reward means more brutal means in order to gain that reward. The more the government tries to intervene, the more blood flows, both in real life and in the movie. For example, the notoriously brutal cartel war between the Gulf Cartel and it's armed wing, Los Zetas, only started after the arrest of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, the leader of the Gulf Cartel. It was a conflict over who gets to inherit the empire. This war was where the trend to torture captives to death on camera for intimidation started to get popularised, btw. God only knows how many civilians got burtalised by the Zetas. This level of violence didn't exist a century ago, all of this is a result of the "war on drugs". Alejandro may have taken out a big drug lord in the end, but in the last scene, there's still gunshots being fired. The US government didn't save Mexico. They aren't the hero, either.

The movie Traffic (2000) is a lot like this, and also stars Benicio Del Toro. It focuses on telling the war on drugs from different perspectives, and could almost be considered a spiritual predecessor to Sicario. If you found this movie compelling, I recommend it. Unfortunately it is just about as disturbing, but I feel like it’s a really impactful companion piece. It shows much more of the civilian perspective. Great video!

Taylor Sheridan is the screenwriter of this film. He’s written some great films and he is dominating television right now. I highly recommend his films: Hell or High Water (stars Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster and Taylor Sheridan’s Academy Award nominated screenplay), Wind River (stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen), Sicario: Day of the Soldado (stars Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro), and Those Who Wish Me Dead (stars Angelina Jolie, Jon Bernthal, and Nicolas Hoult). I highly recommend all his TV Shows: Yellowstone (in its 5th and last season stars Kevin Costner), Mayor of Kingstown (currently in its 3rd season stars Jeremy Renner), 1883 (prequel miniseries to Yellowstone stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill), Tulsa King (about to release it’s 2nd season starring Sylvester Stallone), 1923 (prequel to Yellowstone but sequel to 1883 currently filming it’s second season starring Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Timothy Dalton), Special Ops: Lioness (currently filming it’s 2nd season starring Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman), and Lawmen Bass Reaves (miniseries starring David Oyelowo, Dennis Quaid, and Donald Sutherland).

Roger Deakins once talked about how the approach to lighting should try to avoid complexity, several light sources at various lumens, reflectors, placed shadows, etc. He said, "Nah, just two light sources. Natural if you can swing it. You can do a lot with a window and a lamp if you know your equipment and train your eye to know what to look for." No idea if the cartels are as complex as portrayed here, but they're as brutal as shown. Those people hanging from the overpass, if it was real life they'd probably let them see and hear what they were doing to them before killing them. Don't do drugs, kids. There's more than just us in the cartel equation, but not doing them is at least one step in ensuring that an industry where death follows it at every step isn't helped along by you. If evil is to reign in this world, don't let it be through you or your habits.

Check out the golden oldie ZULU (introducing Michael Caine in a lead role) The movie doesn't pick sides, there's a great dialogue "why us?" "because we're here lad, there's no one else... just us" So a British film would usually have the British Army as the absolute good guys... except it's the Zulu who show absolute bravery. It's the British in someone else's country, but this is further complicated by the ZULU crossing a border to get at the last of the invaders. Fun Facts despite South African law at the time the Zulu were fully paid. The Zulu Warriors are actually Zulu The Zulu King is played by his real life direct descendant!

As long as there are people who consume the dirt that the cartels offer. As long as there are "normal" people who consume the dirt but act as if they have nothing to do with the consequences of their own actions, these types of business people and customers will exist. Quote: "Who taught us this?" You yourself, it needed no instructor or role model. Whenever there were two people, one tried to have what belonged to the other. Now "worthy" cartel boss, a product of your business policy (killing whoever is bothering you) has arrived at your home and is sitting at the table with you, your wife and the children. The, who only lived according to his own laws, has reached the end of the journey with his family. You turned the former representative of the law into a killer. No one other than yourself is responsible for what happens. Dear Kate, you were only there for formal legal reasons. Nobody needed you. Delta, Brolin, Alejandro etc. are 1000x times more qualified. You don't even understand the whole thing yet. Don't get in these people's way. This is now the land of the wolves.

If you imagine that the reality in Mexican cities such as Colima (voted the most dangerous city in the world in 2022), Juárez, Ciudad Obregón and Caracas (Venezuela), San Pedro Sula (Honduras), Pretoria (South Africa) and Durban (South Africa) actually looks like or similar to the movie, it really is deeply disturbing. In real life, just like in “Sicario”, it's always about drugs, violence and tons of money. “Sicario” is breathtakingly staged, the actors are great (especially Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt) and director Denis Villeneuve shows disturbing images that seem to come straight from hell. A mercilessly realistic - and incredibly suspenseful - thriller about the drug war in Mexico.
