3 things in the ending: 1: I think it's great with the ambiguity of Silvio's son. And the notion that he may turn into the next Alejandro, revenging his father, like Alejandro revenged his family. 2: I love the flute music, it sound a bit like howling wolves, fitting that motif. Very atmospheric. 3: i think another thing the ending tell us, is that this is very much everyday for the people of Mexico. A gunshot isn't a big cause for alarm for them, it's just the harsh reality, violence is the norm. Great film and analysis.
@whateverittakes1673
@whateverittakes1673 7 лет назад
On point 3. Mexico isn't nearly the shithole this film paints it to be. The nice parts are down south, in the mountains and on the coasts. I really hate how lazy filmmakers can be when showing their "truth."

TheGoalisCommunism agreed. India is still shown as slumdog millionaire land by Western filmmakers. they need to watch Michael Wood's Story of India to realise where ancient civilizations ( respect to the Incas!) actually began and where true humanity and not religious brain washing to justify conquests and invasions were the norm

@@whateverittakes1673 Except...that back in the north it really can be like that. And I actually agree with the statement of Sicario being an accurate portrayal of Cd. Juarez back in 2010. Plus, I know people who would agree on a gunshot not being that big of a cause for alarm.

Alejandro (Benecio del Toro) was one of the most fascinating characters I have seen in a long time. In the beginning of the film, he came across as a loner, a cowboy (the scene where he is standing outside the private jet, looking on into the distance). Kate sees Alejandro taking a nap and he jumps in his seat (flashback)-so now we see he is suffering from some serious PTSD-at the end of the film we discover why (his wife and daughter were killed by the cartel). In that meeting with the Marshals and the Deltas before they pick up the prisoner: Alejandro looks like he is not even listening to the man speaking: he is distracted, thinking about something else. As we can see at the end of the film, Alejandro has one objective in mind: killing the cartel boss and his family. The intriguing thing about Alejandro is that he used to be a lawyer; he was trying to use the legal system in Mexico to prosecute the cartel. When his wife and daughter were killed, he changed tactics: he became a hired killer, a hitman, a sicario. Alejandro was lethal and efficient with his sidearm; his skill was surgical; he was emotionless, passionless-he had ice in his veins. Alejandro was brutal, blunt (especially to Emily Blunt) and decisive. He was a wolf in the land of wolves. Alejandro: “Nothing will make sense to your American ears. . . . but in the end, you will understand.”
@_MUSTSEEFILMS_
@_MUSTSEEFILMS_ 2 года назад
That line is killer and I agree, his character really sneaks up, it doesn't seem that important when he's first introduced but he really does take over the show.

You can’t analyze most Movies made of recent from literary lenses but you know the real art pieces from the commercial money-makers. There’s a few scopes this film can be analyzed, they all point to Kate/us as the antagonists lol a good movie can, and should be sliced apart. The tenets are intentional not accidental

Alejandro is one of my favorite movie characters. He represents the man who makes criminals pay. He doesn't follow rules or only a very few rules. It's takes men like this to take on violent criminals that don't live by any rules.

Man what an absolute pleasure to watch. Great analysis!! Was a little bummed out when I found out that they would do a spinoff film about Alejandro without Villeneuve at the helm, felt like it might cheapen the character. great analysis, also one thing that I picked up on which was really a great little detail is when Kate and her partner walk into the motel room with all the soldiers watching cartoons of gun fights as if Denis is showing us that these soldiers think of warfare as a game or a cartoon, like it's a sport for them.

+MakFilmDiscussion MFD Yeah i think Denis did a great job of fleshing out the tough solider guys without over doing it and needing to give them too much screen time, then little bits of them that we say, especially during the border driving scene was enough to let us know who they really were.

I didn't for a minute think that Emily Blunt would shoot Benicio del Toro at the end, so (for me) there was no real tension in that moment. What would it have achieved if she had? She would have totally compromised herself for no real benefit. It's not even that Benicio del Toro was evil (although he is surely damned). Blunt didn't even see the crimes he committed on the other side of the border. And Josh Brolin was definitely worse in moral terms. So what was the point really of her pointing her gun at del Toro? What am I missing?
@Suckitupthrift
@Suckitupthrift 6 лет назад
Ciaran Guilfoyle I think it goes to show their relationship. The first time she pointed a gun at him she got shot and he said “don’t even point a gun at me” and she goes ahead and does it again but he doesn’t do anything about it. I believe maybe it’s to show that he sort of cares or wants her to shoot?

I completely agree. The raw humanity portrayed thorough performance and the bleak, gray visuals expertly shot by Deakins really pinpoint this film's brilliance. Notice not one part of this movie takes place in sunlight. The overcast skies symbolizing the cloudiness Dover feels, with what is right and wrong, moral and unforgivable. I could go on. And that last shot... Doesn't get better than that.

I'm going to sound like cinema sins here, but I can never fully work out how a lawyer goes from grieving father to stealthy assassin. The way the film tells it, Alejandro just decides to take revenge, but he's trained like a special ops guy and that has never sat with me. It's a bit of a leap of faith to just assume 'oh, he must have been trained along the way'. That's me with all Villeneuve's movies so far, sorry to say. There is something in all of them that snaps me out of my suspension of disbelief. At least Dune is a clean slate for him. No one til now has done the story justice and by the sounds of it, Dennis finally found his voice.

Sicario and Transformers have absolutely nothing to do with each other. You all can't be serious. Sicario is a dark cerebral crime dramatic thriller film. Transformers is a cgi saturated summer popcorn movie based on transforming action figures from the 80s. You cant compare the 2, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. It's not like Michael Bay intended to make a dark poignant crime drama, Transformers is exactly what its supposed to be.

I also found it interesting that Alejandro is wearing a white coat and black shirt at 10:49. Perhaps saying that his outer positive motive of trying to stop the cartel is just masking his true dark motives which leads to the deaths of Silvio and Alarcón's family, who are both mostly innocent.

I haven't seen it yet, I'm not super excited about it really since its a different director, it wasn't really the story that attracted to me about the first one it was the directors vision, so I'm not sure how ill take the 2nd.

A very interesting appraisal. I would like to see both the Director's and the Cinematographer's views on your interpretation of their work - you might have hit one or two notes or it might be an exercise in subjectivity? Either way it has been cause for thought, keep it up #thumbsup

I love Emily Blunt. She's one of the greatest actresses out there, she's brilliant in every film I've seen her in.

She's just Emily Blunt in every film she does. she's cultivated this looks like she's going to burst into tears at any moment, very irritating.
