Sicario is a 2015 film directed by Dennis Villeneuve. Its one of my favorite films of all time due to its amazing direction, cinematography, but mainly the writing. Sicario tells a deeply thought provoking story with some pretty relatable themes. The film is largely about the war on drugs, however its a story about Morality in general. So in this video I'll analyze Why Our Morality is Being Tested the whole time we're watching Sicario.

One thing I found interesting is that the character of Kate was always envisioned as a woman, Denis Villeneuve believed a man would be more open to letting go of his code by believing the ends justify the means. And I agree. while watching it, despite Matt, Alejandro and co being brutal and crossing the line at times, I believed they had the right mindset, and Kates was wrong. Hers wasn’t changing anything and they were. I believed the ends did justify the means. Sometimes good or normal people have to do bad or abnormal things to keep the common good or make it better, that’s my two cents.

Very interesting. I think that ties into that age old idea that men are often the catalysts for most of the world's wars and violence. And I like your stance here. I do think the film does a great job of showing they are all right at certain points in the film, but are all also wrong at other times. That subtle duality of morality and immorality is something that makes this movie amazing. ✊🏾

first of all, great review! I first watched Sicario because of the border shoot-out scene, so I just expected it to be an action packed movie. I was surprised and even watched it another couple of times to get all its depth and some of the things are written between the lines. I think that the most remarkable thing in it is how Kate starts the movie as a strong figure and later is swallowed by the CIA, politics and even the drug cartels because, as Alejandro told her, she's not a wolf. I guess we can relate to that because we may get involved with the war on drugs, talk about it, vote... in the end, we are just as powerless as her

You hit the nail on the head. It challenges us to think about things differently. Like sure their are principles and procedures, but what Kate didn't understand was those principles and procedures don't often work in the type of fight she was fighting. Matt and Alejandro were sketchy, but sometimes it takes sketchy to fight sketchy, but where do we draw the line? Kind of like when the Cartel boss at the end asks Alejandro do you really think you're any different than me? Such a thought provoking film!

Sicario is my favorite movie of all time. The subtly in which it delivers its messages and themes is brilliant. Not to mention we probably got one of the best score moments of all time with “The Beast” from Johan Johansson, RIP. The line tha hit the hardest for me was towards the end when Matt wrestled Kate down and said “until somebody can find a way to convince 20% of the population to stop smoking and snorting that shit, order’s the best we can hope for”. That line solidified the movie for me by plainly stating that drug users rich or poor, left leaning or right leaning, are the real problem, so if you have an issue with what you’re seeing here, take it up with them.

I agree fully. I beleive Matt has a job to do, but is also well aware that his job is full of irony. He's got to protect the people essentially from their own wrong doing, but the film plays that in such a subtle manner it could easily be missed. As well as the many other themes in the film. The score is brilliant. Color pallete is brilliant. Actions is phenomenal I can totally see why it's you're favorite movie of all time. Definitely amongst mine.! Thank you. 🙏🏾

@@itakeonmovies Agree with everything. Film is damn near perfection for me. Funny side note, the driver of the red car in the bridge scene was my next door neighbor for a while. Real cool dude. He's a stunt guy and did that movie in that time. He even helped me with a fight scene in a short film I did a few years back.

I loved the movie for its moral and ethical implications! The film was uneasy for me, but as you stated, given the circumstances of each in their roles, we could certainly identify with all three characters with justification. While there is still the rule of law through Kate, the evil exhibited by the drug cartels can only be defeated with an evil or greater force. Both characters of Matt and Alejandro are necessary in the war against drugs, and a Kate must look away at times to allow this victory to continue! Great movie!

Kate is not the protagonist, she's the viewer who has no control over what happens (us audience who are watching the movie), Matt is the catalyst, Alejandro is the Real protagonist, it's his story and his perspective which reveals itself slowly to Kate (Us / Viewer / audience).. In all honesty, the movie is simply a stylishly told Revenge story where both CIA and Alejandro use each other to achieve their own endgames!! It's mutual, both of them have a common enemy. Simple 😊😊😊
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 6 месяцев назад
I think you are correct in Cate acting as the moral compass for the audience, but I do think she is still one of the protagonists as the narrative is told through multiple viewpoints (mainly Kate's and Alejandro's). It's her story just as much as it is Alejandro's, in my opinion. Without either of them, the story does not work and they both share stakes, and fulfil character arcs. Now, I do agree with you in the fact that Alejandro is the heart of story. That's just my two cents though, you're assertions are well thought out and insightful! ✊🏾

Really like your take. This first time watching it I caught on to some of those morality themes. My take is a bit more biased since I grew up and lived in El Paso when the movie came out. And as far as the border stuff goes, it's inaccurate for the sake of plot. The bridge scene is incredibly well done but would be a huge binational controversy. The film tends to lean towards Mexican people being the defacto villains. While we do get the Mexican cop who has a home life and later find to be corrupt. Theres never a real idea of what corrupt is on the Mexican side. Just violence and paranoia. I'm not saying there isn't violence in Mexico but often I just see the pov of Mexican people and border people being shown as violent. I still think it's a great movie on a technical scale. And what Villeneuve is doing in the film is interesting. But I just don't like being part of the stereotype of violent Mexicans that it portrays. Still great video and am subscribed!!

Yeah I can definitely see that and I appreciate that firsthand perspective. You know the film has to take its liberties for the sake of plot. I thought it did a good job of showing the immorality on both sides. All the "for the greater good" stuff is used as a diaguise for dirt. However, I understand you're thoughts completely. Thank you for sharing this! 🙏🏾

Yo watup! I'll be 100% honest with. I'm kind of new to this youtube thing too with limited resources as well. I use the recorder on my phone and record in a closet with minor soundproofing. (You could probably use clothes as they work as well). Small spaces where sound can't travel as much can get the job done.

@@itakeonmovies So I watched it and Benito del toro character had some points in the film. The connection between Emily’s character and benicos in the film is quite mirroring. Ems character morality is based upon law because for honorable measures if things aren’t by the book they don’t deem as justifiable. Bens character morality is based upon vengeance. Thus he does his part in missions, he suffers but lives with his nature regardless of outcomes. “Everyman must have a code.” -Bunky , The Wire

@@user-wv8zr7zi1s love it. And you're correct. I beleive the film is showing us that morality can be found in anything depending on the scenario. Yea man Denis Villeneuve is definitely probably the best director working right now. Every film he has directed has at least been an 8/10 performance, very good to great films. I actually think Dune (which I loved) is probably the weakest film of the bunch. Think of how hard it is to top Sicario, Arrival and Prisoners. Those films are masterpieces. Great work on your commentary bro, I’m checking out more vids and subscribing.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
It's hard for me to disagree because his filmography is legendary. I agree with Dune being the weakest, but that was still one he'll of spectacle to me. Love all of those and Enemy too is a great one too. Sicario just hits on practically every cylinder for me. Thanks for the sub, more content on the way!! 🙏🏾

@@itakeonmovies yea let me retract that statement because I forgot about enemy. I liked it but It ain’t Dune. Dune was a mastery of directing, it’s just incomplete so far. So let me reserve judgement until part 2. The second half of the film went a bit too long I believe but I’ll hold off on placing a grade on it until part 2.
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
Yeah it's definitely an unfinished work and I agree I think the films pacing is a bit stagnant at times, but I don't know if that's Villeneuve's fault or the novels. Either way still a great film and can't wait for the 2nd part.
@OverG88

Dune the weakest? lol
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies Год назад
Maybe not the weakest. I'd put it above Arrival, but Sicario and Prisoners are both better in my opinion. Dune and Enemy are nec and neck to me. Once Dune concludes, it could leapfrog all of these though. It's just not done.

Crazy how everyone’s perspective gives us the idea if these characters are good or bad people, and even when we see it one way we also see the other just as much but lean towards our side. The only character who is black and white is alikron he’s apart of the cartel sure Silvio is to but alikron has killed many families and had people kill families, while Silvio just trafficked drugs, alikron has murdered so many people and ordered people to kill others as well
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies Год назад
Yeah you see the movie differently depending on which characters eyes you're watching it through. All of them are right in many ways and they are wrong in others. Alarcon in my opinion is the only truly evil character in the film as his actions have no real motive other then money and self preservation.
@jasonjones2329

So it makes us ask ourselves, are we the baddies
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies Год назад
I think so or kind of at least. Not necessarily if we are the baddies, but more where do we begin to blur the line between good and bad. For example, I am on board with Kate, but also understand Alejandro and even Matt. So by the end of the film I'm morally confused lol

Love Sicario, but walked out of the sequel since it betrayed the nuance of the first and was just straight unfiltered US propaganda fear mongering on the “threat” of open southern borders
@itakeonmovies
@itakeonmovies 2 года назад
I can definitely see your point. I do have to say I didn't hate the 2nd film as much as a lot of people did. I thought it was good, but definitely in a more American, mainstream kind of way. Loved the depth it gave to Alejandro, but also understand that's exactly why many people may hate it. Completely does away with the mysterious nature of his character that was so effective in the first film. Also, I do think the films thematic agenda isn't as subtle or accurste as well. Thank you for this! 🙏🏾
