Side by side comparison of two surfskis: VEGA vs V10 Gen1

We like paddling. We like talking paddling. And we're fascinated how each boat design has its own personality and performance characteristics, and also how surfski design in general has evolved.
With that in mind, we took a page from April Zilg's side by side comparison of her Kahele and Ehukai OC1s so we could see how the Kai Wa'a Vega compares visually and in dimensions from Barry's older first generation V10.
In some ways, this isn't just a comparison between boats, but also a comparison between generations. Surfski design has come a long way in a short time, and it's fun to see how these boats compare when you sit them side by side.
Be sure to watch the video to catch the visual comparison (the difference in rocker is pretty cool!), but here's a quick summary of a few of the measurements we took.
Compared to the older V10, the Vega ski is:
4" (10.16 cm) shorter.
1/8" (.32 cm) narrower at the seat (outside width)
1/4" (.64 cm) narrower in the seat (inside width)
1/2" (1.27 cm) deeper in the seat, when measuring from rail height to seat bottom.
Also, the hump on the Vega is about 1 5/8 inches (4.13 cm) lower than the hump in the older V10, something you immediately notice when switching between the two boats.
Be sure to subscribe to The Paddle Channel as we grow more familiar with the Vega and talk more about feel and performance. And maybe we'll even show you what happens when a V10 Sport paddler hops into a Vega.
Until then, paddle on!
Be sure to check out April's video at • Puakea Designs Kahele ... !

I've been lucky enough try out the vega. amazing on the water and even more amazing just to look at, such a beautifully crafted ski! Very jealous. Your going to have an absolute blast on it!

Thank you Alex. I have paddled it about 20 times so far. Loving it. My leg drive and comfort improve a little with each paddle.

Love the comparison. Love to see a comparison between the Vega and an Epic v10g3. Glad you like the new ski.

@barryblackburn5910 3 года назад
Agreed. That would be a better comparison. We simply were comparing my first ski (Gen 1 V10) to the new ski (Vega). It’s really not fair to compare such an older design to the newest design. Another cool comparison would be the Vega vs the V12.

@@barryblackburn5910 Just want to say I love your channel and look forward to seeing your videos. I think we got into surfskis around the same time and it's cool watching your progression in the sport.

@@alexflach4424 thanks so much! It is really fun and challenging to learn something new. Downwinding in an OC1 or Surfski really is super fun!!

I think a lot of the differences there are a sign of the evolution of surfskis, even the current V10 has more rocker and the rudder position more forward. It all goes to making these top end skis more user friendly and manoeuvrable. The gen 1s have a decent hull shape for a flat water racer, but that big hump is not necessary for flat water and impedes leg drive, the result is that it is a boat out of niche and often low demand in the resale market these days. vega is certainly a sexy looking boat

Thanks for commenting. I agree that this video really shows how far Surfski design has come. It really is fun to look at different boats. I think a more ideal comparison would be to compare the newest V10 or V12 to the Vega. We were simply comparing my first ski (1st Gen V10) to my new ski (Vega). I admit, it’s not really a fair comparison, but we could talk paddling and boat design all day so it was fun. Interestingly, I had just become really confident in the 1st Gen V10 after paddling it for about 18 months. Now I am making the adjustments to the Vega and loving it. Being able to adjust the footplate by as little as 1mm is very helpful. The Vega downwind surfs very very well.

Nice one! I think the right thing is to do such a video but v10 g3 vs the Vega, the g1 v10 is more like the current v12 in my opinion. I guess you feel faster on the vega due to higher stability.

Agreed! A V10 g3 vs Vega would be a great comparison. We did this video because (a) it's cool to see the differences in design, no matter the boat, (b) it's cool to see the evolution of design over the years, and (c) those are the boats we had on hand. :) Maybe we can get our hands on a V10 g3 sometime!

I hear you on the leg drive now that i think of it. Still trying to find the perfect footboard length and pedal angle to feel as connected as i did in the v10.

Barry did get that dialed in -- he kept adjusting about 1mm at a time till he got it. It's amazing how such a small increment can make such a bit difference.

Thanks Tony and Rod! Yes, I really like how you can adjust the Vega’s foot plate as little as 1 mm or more. That really allows a paddler to make it fit perfectly.

Love the channel and thanks for the great content. Have y’all had any experience with the latest and greatest Gen 3 V10, in comparison downwinding to the Vega and Vega Flex?
@ThePaddleChannel
@ThePaddleChannel 3 года назад
No, we haven't, but we sure would like to! We've heard good feedback on surfing the Gen 3 V10, but at this point, we only know of one friend who has paddled both the G3 V10 and the Vega and Flex for a significant amount of time. He leans towards the Vega and Vega Flex when it comes to downwinding, but we haven't had the opportunity to make a comparison ourselves. Thanks for the kind words!

Have you paddled latest V10 or the Vega yet? I have not paddled the Gen 3 V10. In addition to the Gen 1 V10 in this video I have paddled the V10 Sport, the V11, the Vega Flex and now the Vega. My favorite Surfski is the Vega. I have also paddled OC1 for several years now. I have paddled the Ehukai, Kahe Kai, Kahele, and the Ares. My favorite Oc1 is the Ares. I think that finding the right boat (OC1 or Surfski) is highly individual. Much like finding a surfboard, you need to find one that is suitable for your height weight, fitness, and most importantly the water you paddle in.

Which thickness spectra is best for an Epic v10 gen1? The gen 1 carbon v10 has a really cheap flimsy rudder box. That white cup like thing right below the hatch cover is so thin it's not gonna last that long. In fact, mine is cracking and falling apart already. C'mon Epic, please don't use cheap crappy plastic stuff. Make it outta carbon or even aluminium or something much more durable than cheap lousy plastic.

I have used both and owned the V-10 2nd Gen.. it's not really a fair comparison.. you should compare the Vega with the 3rd Gen V-10 ... Ist Gen V-10 is now about 15 years old.... that's like comparing an ARES to a ..... PEGASUS from Kai.. I like Vega and it's AMAZING when you have the Trifecta.. WIND< CURRENT, Swell all going the same way.. The V-10 is more forgiving in SLOP which is what we got in Hawaii bouncing off the rocks

@barryblackburn5910 3 года назад
Ian, thanks for the comment. We would agree with you. It would be much better to compare the Vega to the newest V10 or even the V12. I was comparing my first ski (1st Gen V10) to the new boat (Vega) before I sold the V10. A local lifeguard bought it right after we filmed this video!! My guess is that the Vega would be most comparable to the newest V10 or V12. Would you agree?
@hyprian
@hyprian 3 года назад
@@barryblackburn5910 Yes, I do agree BUT the V-10 still more stable than the Vega but I think the V-12 will be slower unless it's big water - I have V-12 too ... I just paddled my friend's Vega for practic in Kona it was all ONSHORE wind and swell...we going down the coast.. So got slapped on the right UPWIND and got slapped on the left downwind ..and we switched out.. in both cases the V-10 was able to be 50 yards ahead in a 15 min run.. only because you didn't have to brace as much.. but when we do straight downwind.. -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ehvfFoS8AEI.html even small stuff .. the VEGA is faster because it's basically the ARES hull without the Ama... so I do Kanuski to really test the hulls - paddle both Skis with OC paddle.. you definitely find out which OVERALL will work better .. As Oscar Chalupsky would say "STABILITY is ABILITY"
