Installing some gates between a garage & the side of a house. the gate post are tanalised timber but the gates will be made from Pine pse treated with clear preservative & painted later by the owners, the gates are to be made as cheap as poss so the stile & rails are going to be put together using floating tenons made with the XL Domino, glued together with PU glue, Tee hinges and a ring latch handle.
I don't make these videos to make money, I make them to share the tips I've learnt over 36yrs as a joiner, but filming, editing, exporting, reviewing & uploading does take a lot of time so if you have gained anything from any of videos & would like to help me out & donate pls click the PayPal link below, every little helps & will be much appreciated. Thanks for this. I’m digging though lots of your older stuff too and enjoying it. I have a wood selection question. How do you do it? I’m guessing Rules of thumb! But where to start? I’m looking at building a pair of driveway gates. Each leaf 1.3m wide x 1.4m high. Thanks again for the material.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner Год назад
Hi, for the size of wood that is taking some weight, I use a floor joist formula, 44mm joists @ 400mm centres - the span ÷ 20 + 20mm, the added 20mm is for safety & to reduce bounce in the floor, so that can be ignored for eg. pergolas, In your case for gates I would say the sizes are more about aesthetics, design, practical tried & tested sizes, every gate I've built has seemed to be different, even the ones that are the same 🤣🙃😂👍🤸‍♂️

Hi great video . Why do you do the top rail over the styles , instead of in between? Thanks.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 года назад
🙋‍♂️ Thanks Andrew 👍 about 4mins in i try to explain why i put it like that, the decision to put it like that was to help stop rain sitting & soaking into the end grain, if i'd put the rail in between the tops of the styles would've been exposed, 👍🤷‍♂️😉

Just came across your channel. Having watched you make the gates I think I missed how you fitted the T&G boards into the frame lengthwise. It looked as though you just trimmed them all with a track saw but how did they all fit inside the header? Was the header fitted afterwards? How would it be done if the rails were morticed into the stiles rather then your method in the video. Hope this makes sense? Cheers. Great vid, enjoyed watching it.

Gid, thank you so much for putting together such a detailed video on how to make gates. I’m going to attempt to make my own. Just one question what size nails did you use please? Many thanks again Jason
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 4 года назад
Thanks n you're welcome 👍 I use the longest i can get in, the panelling is 12-15mm thick, the batten/groove it's getting nailed to is no more than 30mm so I'd use a nail 40mm-ish, i use ring nails with a flat head, not as pretty as pins but a lot more holding strength, I went to fix a gate not long ago where a big firm, Atkinsons, had nailed the boards on with 16g pins, a little expansion with the weather n they'd bowed n popped off,

Hi, Good to here that, I'm sharing because i don't have an apprentice so the best i can do is virtually share online 😂 Yeah I'll be back with more vids soon, I wrote more about my whereabouts in the comments on my last vid about fixing the chair, The wood for these gates is just regular off the shelf pine pse, they're cheap gates, i could've used tanalised timber but the stuff i get is sawn, it's where the joints are that it rots, tanalising doesn't go all the way into the wood & i can't get treated T&G anymore, the suppliers get too many rejects or complaints from the wet treatment process, twisting, warping n shrinkage after fixing, The posts & frame are tanalised. As long as this gate has a weather treatment applied regularly & isn't constantly wet it'll last many yrs, easily worth the amount paid for making & the install.. I've made quite a few over the yrs, pics on FB, I regularly get repeat work from the people who i build for so get a chance to look in on jobs, Thanks Anthony 👍👍 facebook.com/gid.joiner/photos_albums

@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
Thanks James 👍 Last week when the saw broke I had about £500 to spend, I've been working weekends to save up for a decent welder i had to choose, saw or welder, I bought the welder, that can fix my saw & keep my van on the road, I'm screwed without wheels but have another table saw in the van n could even get by even without that. so sorry i didn't really look, for that kind of money i might have just got a Dewalt portable site saw but my ideal new saw for me really I'd end up spending over £1000 for what i want.

Yeah difficult decision,, I've got the de walt saw, it has it's obvious limits, i would love a setup like yours but im limited on space, i have been looking at the Axminster table saw and the Itech? Looks ok and just about affordable. Looking forward to your next video
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
Yeah decent saws aren't cheap, when i bought this for £500 i had a choice to spend a little more for similar to the ones you mention but they only cut 75mm deep, the one i have cuts 100mm, i thought i could improve it, mount it in my bench, make a decent fence which i did, it's an on going project as long as the motor keeps going 😉

Hi, I’m looking to build my own gates, I have a gap of 1752mm between a brick wall and a fence post. Would you recommend double gates? How wide is too wide for a single gate? I want the gate to be 2m tall.
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 3 года назад
Hi, there's not really a limit to how big a gate can be, if made with wood it's prob the size of timber that can be acquired & the structural strength of the wood, farm gates are big & canal lock gates are massive, what will limit you is what you're hanging it on to & the hinge furniture available, a brick wall might seem solid but i wouldn't hang anything too big on it, prob no more than one of a pair of gates, & if i hang a big gate on a 4" post i like to put a timber across the top between the posts like goal posts to help support them from leaning with the weight, 6-8 inch posts & bigger can be bought that won't bend, the bigger the post & the bigger the gate the more of the post needs to be in the ground, ⅓-¼ of whatever sticks up needs to concreted in, 6ft sticking up needs 18"-24" in the ground, if the post was for a gate i would make sure it was close to the 24" depth. Sorry i can't be much help. I have some pics on my FB page but i don't think there is any big single gates facebook.com/gid.joiner/photos_albums

Hi gid. I’m thinking of getting a headless Pinner for an oak bannister and spindles job I have coming up, could you recommend a decent compressor and Pinner that isn’t too pricey as I’ll only be using it occasionally but also decent enough that it won’t break, cheers
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
Hi, I've had an axminster headless pinner for yrs, it's 'ok' it only fires up to 20mm but would replace it with a Bostitch that fires up to 30mm, they are top nailguns, My little compressor is a Wolf, 25yrs+ n still works fine, when it dies I'm not sure,...
@17MikeThompson
@17MikeThompson 5 лет назад
Gid joiner I have been looking at the Axminster Pinner. Would you say for jobs such as spindles/fillets on a stair case or beading it would do the job? I’ve got a lot 16g Brad nailer I use for general 2nd Fix and painted work but think it’s a bit aggressive for oak spindles/fillets
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
For spindles i use 18g Bostitch, Headless pins are not big enough & they need the head for holding strength bu if your going to glue them than i was taught a nail or screw is only a holding/clamp until the glue goes of, I think you'd need more than 20mm the Axminster does tho, which ever you buy try put the nails in at a slight angle to each other bit like a dovetail angle, the two will work together for better holding, nails put in parallel/straight might pull out straight
@17MikeThompson
@17MikeThompson 5 лет назад
Gid joiner that’s fair enough I can see where your coming from, if you were installing oak stair parts how would you install the fillet pieces? Do you think glue and tape would do to save on having to hide pin holes? I usually only do paint grade stair parts and just use my 16g nailer
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
I use 18g a lot more than 16g 🤔 16g is a bit rough. traditionally they would've just stuck a nail in, it's part of the honesty of a build, & a lot of wood was used for it's properties not aesthetics so oak was painted over, of course some were stained & polished but it's only more recently that these pieces have been stripped & varnished, I think to tape & glue might be difficult, each spindle would be pushing against the next fillet piece & it all could get out of hand, I think minimal fixing with the headless pinner is the choice, they are invisible & the plus side to not having a head is they don't split the wood which Oak does easily. Just had a look to see what's on offer, I still think the Axminsters 20mm isn't big enough, I would spend the extra n get the Bostitch, it'll last you a lifetime, that goes up to 30mm, that's enough for you, after that it's the Grex that'll do bigger pins but costs a lot, Once you buy a compressor you'll find yourself buying alsorts of nailers/staplers etc.. 😂 I'm going to buy this one one day. www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Bostitch-Tu-216-2330K-E-5902013930334-23-Gauge-Headless-Pinner?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4qvlBRDiARIsAHme6ouA56-g5l9j_H_7wzZHmOTMkXBh0Ru7PNobDLLpekgUkizyrZmKAj4aAkomEALw_wcB

If you couldnt use dominoes or mortise and tenon (due to time) how else would you join the rails and styles?
@Gidjoiner
@Gidjoiner 5 лет назад
🤔The Domino is ¼ of the time compared to mortice & tenon, that's a big reason why i bought it, Half lap joints would take a little bit of time, dowels if you had the dowelling machine, doing them by hand is inconsistent n time consuming, Apart from that, screwing or nailing together, duck tape & super glue or magic 😉 🧙
