I've worked for the US Postal Service for 20 years. During that time, I was hosting public events, reselling items on Amazon/eBay, streaming on Twitch, doing podcasts... I was searching for anything that would take off to get me out of USPS. Reselling took off right before COVID hit to the point where I needed to take off the entire Christmas season to handle the amount of orders I was getting. I left my USPS job in October 2021 and never looked back. Still going strong. I made my side hustle into my full-time gig.

I used to work at a violin shop when I graduated college. I realized that I could start licensing some of my instrumental music online to singers and I would brew coffee at 7 PM at night and would make instrumental beats and release them on RU-vid. I released music on RU-vid every single day for about two years and after that time I I was able to quit my job and do music full-time! I’ve been a full-time music producer ever since and I have still primarily use RU-vid to find clients and grow my network… I have worked with Grammy nominated artists and have millions of streams online with international artists as well! One of the biggest blessings I have had looking back is that I live in Albany, New York, where the cost-of-living is relatively cheap, and I had no car payments or anything of that sort when I started my side hustle… so many people told me that if I wanted to make it in music I had to move to New York City or LA… Some big expensive city… Looking back that would’ve been one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made ! LOL. Keep your expenses low and don’t quit your day job until you see the growth!

I do DoorDash on the way home from work. I don’t add miles and only take orders on the way home. Helps with gas and beer but not much else. And not worth it to do full time due to inflation

We don’t have side hustles right now. When my husband and I were first married, we had five jobs between the two of us. He was a full-time mechanic, he worked part-time as a handyman on the weekends, and a few times a month on weekends he would deal blackjack at private events. I worked full-time at a fast food restaurant and I also did tattoos and piercings on the weekend. It was a rough time! Right now we both just have full-time jobs, and we do OK. We don’t have any debt, we own our cars, have a very manageable mortgage. But it still feels like we’re not really getting ahead. I would like to be able to save more.

I started doing Doordash about 2 years ago to be able to feed my children and eat mostly healthy. I average between $200 and $300 a week. I work around 15 hours per week. My main job is eligibility worker for the state of Oregon. Very frustrating that I have to have a side hustle to live somewhat comfortably.

I'm a baby boomer. I got laid off at the end of 2008. Took two years to get another full time job. During those 24 months I began on-line teaching and expanded a small home business that was making less than $500/month. After I got rehired I kept the side gigs going strong. I make about $1,000/month teaching online, my home business went viral in 2023 and now makes me on average $3,500/month (it varies greatly from month to month). I started dividend investing and it's making about $750/month. As much as I hate the clown who laid me off in 2008 (they got fired barely a year later) they got me motivated and now I'm sitting pretty.

I’d like to add that there are many of us who can’t get a side hustle because of worsening health conditions and disabilities. The lack of support for us means we spiral further into debt and worsening conditions unable to meet our health needs and in turn cannot work or do additional work. These numbers would look much more frightening if that was taken into account - people who would also have a side hustle if it were possible for them to.

My side hustle turned into a full time gig. I sell products on amazon full time and I do sneaker reselling on the side. Sneaker reselling nets me about $10-15k while amazon nets me over 6 figures. My “full time” job is I am a security field inspector where I work twice a week and get paid 40 hours full. I am very lucky

I have an engineering degree but I had to enroll in medical school because it became obvious to me pretty early right out of school, that engineering wasn't going to pay enough. Fortunately my mom talked me into doubling in premed in case engineering didn't work out. Well.....engineering didn't work out so here I am in my last year of medical school. Had no choice. Food is up, vehicle maintenance is up, everyday supplies are up (toiletries, stationary, etc.), taxes, and more. I fortunately had an opportunity and pounced on it. Me and my wife both have side hustles. More for fun but the cash is nice too. I work FT as a recruiter for a health care company. My wife works PT at a coffee ship. She makes and sells tshirts out of a shed we had built in the back yard. I restore and sell classic cars, parts, furniture, build and sell engines, basically anything I know I can make a profit on. The side hustle did help a ton when I got laid off from one job, didn't have to change my life style too much. The side hustle also give me the ability to pull the FU card on employers without worrying about money. No longer have to bow down to them. My current employer is awesome so the side hustle is just for fun now. Also, I wanted to keep busy for when I retire in about 20 years. I have seen friends and family retire and have nothing to do, then deteriorate rapidly once retired. Lastly, find something you can do that's cash only transactions. Makes it a little more limited but worth it to not have uncle Sam in your pocket. Use the cash for your dinners, vacations, night out with friends, etc.

I live in CA. I work my full time Mon-Fri earn $100k annual , I consult as side hustle ( signed up 2 clients on retainer, brings extra $3100 monthly, plus other projects I pick up here and there) I’ve consulted for about 1.5 years now. Still getting taxed heavy and started paying IRS taxes now instead of refunds as I was used to before. I payed off my credit card debts and my wife also brings in $44k per year. It still impossible to buy a home in LA California, spending too much time hustling and not enough time enjoying my family or life in general. We are consumed in this system of “live to work” not work to live. We are not living.

Over the past three decades I've traveled to many different countries. What we're seeing now is American's beginning to live like the rest of the world has for a long long time. For instance, I lived and worked in Japan for a couple of years. My Japanese co-workers were knocking out 70 hour weeks on a regular basis. They were salaried, too! That's two jobs in my book. And they weren't making a fortune. Go to downtown Beijing and look at all the office lights on after 8pm. I worked for one very large finance company in the US and during tax season from Jan 2 to April 14, they had to work a minimum of 60 hours a week. That's a MINIMUM. Most worked 70 to 75. Walked into a Walmart lately? Noticed the 70 year olds stocking shelves and checking receipts? There's a guy working at a Costco near me. He's 79 years old! He needs the money and health insurance. Welcome to the new norm.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Fellow Z’er here, how many more years of schooling? It WILL pay off, I’m sure you keep hearing that and it feels like light at the end of a 100mile long tunnel but you NEED to power through it. Relatively 3-5 years is 1/6 of our current life time and so much more to go after. If its really burning you out that bad do you have any other bridges you can jump to that would provide similar wealth to the field you would have moved into? If not then you really might want to keep powering through. If so, can you move somewhere cheaper and do it from there? Maybe even just for a couple years until you can stockpile cash to not have to work during schooling? I finished college and after 2 years forgot roughly 35% of everything I learned so keep that in mind… You just need someone close to you to listen. But please keep working for now. As a rando from the internet it is possible and school will pay off for your field

I'm retired and I held onto most of my old comics. Every once in awhile, when I really need cash, I pull out one of my old silver age books to sell. Sadly, I regret almost every one that I let go. Even though comics are selling so high these days it's kind of ridiculous.

A side hustle - the illusion of success due to flexible hours and work schedules. I know this isn't what people want to hear, but (on average) you will make considerably LESS money doing side hustles instead of going 'balls to the wall' with a full-time job. You gain flexibility, but you lose over-time, risk reduction, tax-deductions, and above all else a consistent source of income. I used to drive for Door-Dash, UberEats, and Grubhub some time ago. The average gig-worker only stays in the hustle for 6 months. This is because it takes you about 6 months to get into car accident or need other work done, as well as 6 months to find out that you're averaging minimum wage. It's become more lucrative to blog about gig-jobs as opposed to actually doing them.

Doing Uber every Sat and Sunday morning, no traffic and it's pretty busy. You can make $100 - $150 per day (just in the morning). Around $900 $1000 extra per month and it's not hard. Im using this money in order to be able to invest more into ETFs and stocks.

Just shameful that in America people have to work two jobs plus do a side hustle but they are being penalized for making the small amount of extra change. Veterans and the Elderly who worked all their lives are now on the street because they do not qualify for Welfare benefits and their Property Taxes are too high from their meager Social Security or Pension. Yet, someone crosses the border illegally they are given $3000+ on EBT cards, free food, free medical insurance, free hotels stay, free shelter, free clothing. What is wrong with that picture?

I'm a baby boomer. I tried a side hustle when I was a lot younger (wholesaling). It was hard work and took so much time. I found out that just working as much overtime on my regular job was much easier. I was fortunate in that the company I worked for offered as much overtime as you could work. Then the government stuck their noses into the matter. That robust labor market is because the majority of the jobs created are government jobs. Government doesn't know how to run a company.

New job and frugal lifestyle no longer necessary, but can always use food delivery apps if needed. Free time spent reading books, exercising, meditation and improving my life.

I’m gen x and felt the nudge to start my antiques business 2 years ago. I’ve kept my day job and am growing my business. I do this with the plan to allow for early retirement and run it FT then. It’s still several years away but I’ve learned the wheels turn slowly and it takes time to build a following. I spend a ton of time on it at night and weekends and am happier than ever.
