I just wanted to say I really appreciate your approach and discussion in these types of tool videos. Getting into the hobby had been intimidating sometimes to figure out where to spend money to make my models look nice.

Awesome, that's what I'd been hoping for! Money saved on tools is money that could be used on more kits (or other important expenses 😛)!

Great comparison and finally someone who bothered to take close up pictures. Thank you. At the end of the day, all nippers require you to go in and clean up using a blade or sanding. A sharp nipper can save a tiny bit of time but it won't be much of a difference. Spending anything more is hard to justify.

I literally bought the Dspiae and Valtcan this week for the two cut method, didn't think the Valtcans would be on par with the Dspiae... it was on sale for $20.

The Godhand 5.0 is still the best in my books, but I'm always open to improvement or a better option and glad to see there's good competition because they just seem to be pretty much sitting on their butts and not bothering to produce enough for distribution. I still can't wrap my head around how people manage to break their pairs unless they use it for harder plastic like that of wargames/miniatures or clear parts. I have several for years now and all of them are still razor sharp. Dispiae seems to be the best contender and the designs of their tools as so sleek! On a side note I did find it strange why Tamiya doesn't make their own competitor to single-edge nippers, I'd imagine they have the tech and funds for that. I'd love to see that.

If you can maintain your GodHands, for sure they are a great nipper! I use mine mostly for special/expensive kits, with my DSPIAE as my workhorse nippers.

I've been using the Micro Marks for years. And I've only compared them to the Valtcans and the blue handle God Hands. My goto nippers are Micro Mark and their customer service is top notch. I had the first pair of nippers that had a slight misalignment of the anvil (flat) side and the cutting blade side. They said that all of their items are inspected in-house prior to getting shipped out. But sometimes a few may slip through the inspection line. So they refunded me my money and said that i could just keep the nippers. I ended up ordering another one because the quality of the cuts werent bad at all. I ordered another set because i felt confident that these were on par with God Hands for half the price. I still use the misaligned pair for removing all of the parts initially from the sprue. Too bad the Micro Mark cutters didn't come with any case or cover, though.

I bought the dspiae sta 3.0 nippers and i feel like they tend to leave some level of stress marks even when i cut gently and precisely, it looks like i May have to get the godhands, the price is worth it if it saves me time. Time>money. I can always make more money, can't make more time lol

The Micro-Mark nippers are only $25 at the Micro Mark webstore. They are actually my go-to since I'm heavier handed. Again YMMV and in my case the Micro-Marks are great.

Before I say anything I just wanna say that I come from a very diffrent model building backround. I have been building games workshop plastic kits for almost 8 years now and I have just recently fallen in love with gunpla. With that out of the way I myself own the dspiae nippers and I havent used any other single blade nippers before. I have to say that I love the dspiae nippers for gunpla and scale model kits but for gw kits with their massive gates and tough plastic they are an absolute nigthmare to use and I actually broke my first pair because I managed to bend the blade while cutting the plastic and when I tried to bend it back the blade snapped. So be very carefull with the blade! But otherwise I can recomend these nippers a lot! Especially if you mainly build gunpla. For armour modellers they migth not be that usefull as the parts are prettymuch allways painted and textured often so the nubmarks arent a problem but these nipper do cut really fast and reduce the cleanup time a lot. If you do only resin or GW models I would not recomend these as they dont really cut larger gates that well. My only real complaint is that they are very front heavy and thus feel kind of unwieldy but I feel like this would be a general problem with all nippers that have these skinny hands. I have been thinking of modifying the handel so I wont constantly be so deathly afraid of dropping them. But yeah hold the as close to the actual nipper to have bit more controll of them.

For GW kits, I use $4 wire cutters, and clean the leftover bit with a pocket knife.

To me at the end it is a matter of cost. All of them do the same. It depends on how much you can/want to spend the ones you might want to get.

@ZackRToler
@ZackRToler Год назад
This might just be me, but the sample size is a bit too small to really compare the nippers. As in, perhaps having them cutting maybe 5 or more nubs each and comparing them all. However, I know little to nothing as I have yet to try my first Gunpla kit.
@aMillaGunpla
@aMillaGunpla Год назад
That's a fair opinion. I think the biggest takeaway I got from using each of these (longer term) is that all of the cuts perform pretty similarly, the main difference will be in the fit and finish of the nippers themselves

my micro mark nippers i got not too long ago actually have dspiae st-a 3.0 lightly engraved into it. i assume they're either made at the same place or the micro mark nippers are just rebranded dspiae nippers lol

I was wondering about the quality of the steel they are made of and how long they will stay sharp before dulling out.
@aMillaGunpla
@aMillaGunpla Год назад
The GodHands and DSPIAE nippers I know for sure are heat-treated steel, so they'll last as long as you continue to care for them. That is to say that you shouldn't use them on thick nubs/sprues, hard plastic (like clear parts), and also don't over-exert pressure. When using nippers, I cut pretty slowly, I find that this controls how much pressure I'm using as well as gives the best finish result on the nub.

Try one of the cheaper Micromark or Valtcan nippers. The blade is thicker than the GodHands so they won’t break as easily

So.. Might not unrelated to this branded nipper discussion at all, but I have a question. If I want to avoid discoloration as much as possible, do these nipper help at all? Or they will result the same when I use regular nipper and do clean up afterwards? I really don't want to invest on them if the end result is the same. Hopefully someone can share their experience. For the clean up, let's say I use Dspiae siren which to be honest, the discoloration is still pretty bad.
@aMillaGunpla
@aMillaGunpla 2 года назад
If you're talking about the light/white marks that show up, a good pair of single-bladed nippers will definitely help! If you aren't already, make sure you're cutting them off the runner, leaving some material on the end, then cut off the rest of the nub once the part is off of the runner.
@saberburst
@saberburst 3 года назад
Hey! So I just got the DSPIAEs and all seemed great until I read the instructions. What does it mean when it says the blade and blunt end aren't on the "same level"? Because on mine, the blade meets the blunt end so when you turn them around (the side without the DSPIAE logo) the two sides sit flush with each other? In other words, they seem to be on the same level when they shouldn't be according to the instructions. Is that bad? Do I have a faulty pair? Or am I just interpreting it wrong? Sorry, just got back into the hobby and I'm really confused!
@aMillaGunpla
@aMillaGunpla 3 года назад
It’ll be a little hard to explain without pictures, but yes they aren’t on the same level. If you look at the flat side, they may appear level, but they should be off by a tenth, or even a few hundredths, of a millimeter. Here’s something you can try: close the nippers, then run your nail lightly back and forth on the flat side. When going from the bladed side to blunt side, you should feel a little resistance. If you go the other way, you should feel a little “bump” but there shouldn’t be resistance.
@saberburst
@saberburst 3 года назад
@@aMillaGunpla you're a genius!! Thanks for suggesting that little test because as it turns out, my nippers are good to go. Although I get a tiny bit of resistance going from blunt to bladed, the bladed side going to blunt has waaaay more resistance, which I can live with. Thanks again:) looking forward to more of your videos

It really depends on the nub placement. If the nub is on the edge of the part, then you can get a flush cut. Otherwise, yes it will leave just a bit left, which you’ll either need to sand down, file down, or slice off with a knife
@aMillaGunpla
@aMillaGunpla 3 года назад
If it were completely level, I’d imagine it would eventually mess up the alignment of the blade side, as it could slip under the blunt side
