Hook was a life long socialist still. Interestingly, some of the most ardent anti-communists were socialists in the US, for better or for worse for the socialist movement here, I don't know.

World labor is stratified. The bottom layer, currently Asian, is the proletariat. Part of the money saved by paying the bottom layer subsistence wages is used to co-op the upper layers of labor, currently Western European and North American. It's as if Nixon said to the Chinese in the 1970s, "Look," we're going to include you among the owners of the planet. But you'll be saddled with the new proletariat. When you're rich enough to co-op them, choose a new fall guy. Good luck."
