There is something very weird and unnatural about seeing Daemons of Tzeentch not using magic or their claws to scale the walls, but just regular wooden ladders.

agree, some demons of tzeentch should have a unique trait that would allow them to scale walls without need of siege equipment

I wonder how easuly the modders could play with the visuals and "turn off" the ladders for some units and move them closer so it looks like they're just climbing on the wall.

Agreed, certain units such as Wraiths, Eshin units, Shadow Warriors or Tzeentch and Slaanesh Daemons should get unique animation for it, not involving ladders.

I wish the would make for several units to be able to scale without ladders e.g. ghosts, spiders, horrible creepy stuff etc. It would make for less silly moments.

To be fair tzeentch is the most derpy chaos god, so it still fits with his theme. I mean this is the guy with flamethrower ghosts, giant birds and pink blobs. Seeing those units using normal siege ladders is probably a subversion of expectation tzeentch could get behind

Imagine having demons and skaven slaves climbing walls with their hands and claws instead of a pocket ladder. The animation itself would not change that much and the main difference would be their relative fast scaling and climbing on up to 5 different lines instead of the usual 3. That way, you as defender would feel actually threatened and "zerged" which also a more accurate portrayal of warhammer. But that's just my oppinion

Looking at this, It just looked like siege defense would become easier. I can't see the AI making proper use of these features, but I guess we'll have to see.

Hope so too, I'll keep my expectations low when it comes to AI and that there will be borked parts with it for release or spotting its limitations and finding exploits defending. It's a great start atleast and whilst AI should be finished on release and keeping such low expectations is kinda sad, it's better than too much.

Sellin an strategy game which can make superb screenshots but contain dumb AI and terrible multiiplayer support is the bussines model for 20years. I dont belive theyr big heads are going to change it now.

I hope they make unique settlement types for different factions-- the Empire gets sprawling cities, dwarfs actually defend the gates to the mountain, etc

I would like to see the Fortresses for Reikland to actually matter. Like an Impassable Object unless defeated - and better thought out. Or the Dwarf citys not just being flat - like the elven ones. Sieges should be difficult after all. Not easy.

@@SpicyFiur They'd probably do this, or at least I hope so. I think the mountain pass gates in Total War Three Kingdoms were a development of the Elven Gates and refined enough to be used generally across games. So now that they got the idea down firmly, hope they apply it everywhere wherever appropriate.

Yeah, its kind of no secret a big part of the reason why they simplified sieges so much in WH1 and WH2 was because they knew that the AI was no good at them. I'm not so certain the AI is going to do so well here.

​@@jacobbellamy7640 Hope we´re wrong but CA hasn´t characterized itself for providing high quality launch releases. Most of its games have turned to be awesome with time though (W2 *hands down*). With W3 I see an incredible level of ambition so I guess we´ll have to wait more than a year to have a fully functional game xD

This was one thing I hoped they actually addressed. Fine the whole ladder thing I get for technical and gameplay sense. But why not break it up with the variety of units? Why would demons use ladders when they can use magic to float up or whatever? Or Spider riders why wouldn't they just directly climb the walls? Just seems pretty like a whole lot of variety and opportunity missed for various thematic armies.

@@scelonferdi Thats a good point. Always felt defenders particularly missle units like gunners or archers to a degree miss out on alot of their effectiveness due to the angles where they cant actually see and thus wont shoot. Having the option to mess with the climbers via dumping rocks on them using certain units would be nice. Use your archers to shoot then have your melee individuals be able to dump rocks or whatever stuff ontop of the ladders. Would make the wall combat different in a total war sense and stand out for sure.

Remove ladders from units and make them something you have to buld before the siege. Walls are more of a hindrance to the defender than they are to the attacker, because his archers and gunners can't really shoot well from behind them, and if they are on top they get pushed my infantry with magic appearing ladders.

@Innocent Jogger would say just limit the number of ladders to 2 points max. with the amount increasing by building more or maybe 1 more per siege engine. that along with making it so not every single unit is able to attack the gate, maaaaybe a widened arc of fire to the towers, not quite the 360 of the past but a bit more, make the merlons of the wall more reliable so standing on the walls isn't just making the unit a target. fixed points to descend the wall on the other side to not allow troops to just rush over and down to attack anything vulnerable below and would say the walls would become at least worth considering defending in a siege instead of mounting a couple of spread out units to activate towers before retreating to street chokepoint.

@@Wildtrexkid agreed. Ladders worked better in rome and medieval II. If it ain't broke don't fix it. And while we're at it, there was no need to introduce supply points for the defenders. They could have just given them siege points like the attackers with which to build barricades & traps.

it doesn't affect dwarfs at all, but it's worth noting that the weapons team that Cathay has were on the walls, and it does look like there's more to the rework then what we have seen here, so I wouldn't be surprised if they do plan on implementing it in some way, or other such units at the least

YOu already have the levels in the settlement, and by the way the artillery will be fudge on the wallseither way, too slow and one model upthe wallwillbe the death of them haha.

@@SleepyFen well we can see in this map there was room to place them, however Cathay doesn't seem to worry about direct fire all that much, so this map wasn't desighned with that as a main concern

@@calebbarnhouse496 we won't see the siege update extended to the old races before Mortal Empire's releases. If and when that happens, I'm sure we'll see races like Dwarves have cities which better suit their own defensive style. It makes sense that one race's city defenses aren't designed with another race's artillery in mind, and I honestly like the idea that holding another race's city might be more difficult than your own. Though, that said, Dwarves *do* have both Bolt Throwers, Flame Cannons, Quarrelers, Rangers and Irondrakes with Trollhammer Torpedos, all of which fire in an arc, so it's not as if you're completely screwed just because the city wasn't designed with Organ Guns in mind :P

I hope, sieges of minor settlements are changed too - so that there is close combat on the barricaded streets in the actual settlement. Fighting in the open field should be a thing only if defender chooses to do so, otherwise he is defending among the buildings the way it was in older TW games.

This isn’t the same. It’s the same deployables sure, save for the towers, but in Rome 2 you had to plan beforehand and place your deployables in the best spot, form a strategy around it, and then fight and see how things played out from there. Here you can build them mid battle from nothing, like it’s some base builder or tower defense. This is my only major issue, make them deployables before the battle and I’d have no issue. Total War has always been about the preparation for the battle, the setup, and then the battle itself, and this is just a weird addition that unfortunately will now be present in every siege instead of being relegated only to those special final battles like I had hoped (and like CA had said)

Maybe because most people don't have the time for a 100 one hour sieges every campaign. Sieges are nice to have, but some people hype sieges too much. They were a miserable thing in history to do, gruesome and brutal grinds if the defenders didn't capitulate. CA moved back from Rome 2 siegs because they had a 90%+ auto resolve rate. And a lot of people complained about Rome 2 sieges. Although sieges have been complained about since total war had them. It's not just since warhammer like many think (many new players).

@@DzinkyDzink Rome 2 sieges are great, deployables were the bomb. The only issue was that the pathfinding was a little janky around broken walls and such, but they were one of the better sieges in the series

the reason is very easy. the AI was not able to handle sieges in rome 2 at all. they repeatedly broke and derped out.

While I feel the need to say that this is long overdue as the sieges have been pitiful in the warhammer series so far, still got to say this looks quite interesting. Let's hope the AI will manage these new sieges and not do too much dumb stuff.

Also they need to make sieges more punishing to auto-resolve. Because most of us are just going to spam armies and auto-resolve 99% of sieges. Or add manpower to actually punish players for losing too much troops or something.

It's a CA issue not just a warhammer issue. Even back in medieval 2, the sieges were easy to cheese. You could take any castle/city with 1 unit of fast horsemen.

@@Daniel_deez_nutz Yeah, you could cheese it but in the older TWs it was more fun playing the siege the normal way. Even with buggy pathing and whatnot. In warhammer it's not only easy to cheese but if you play it the way it's intended that's not particularly fun either (imo)

@@Uberdude6666 Are you seriously suggesting depth? we had this before in Rome I or Medieval 2 and all the players were absolutely over overwhelmed by the sheer complexity of this feature. Clearly unnecessary for the average player these days and way too much thinking, the game is already confusing enough as it is considering how bloated with features the series has become over all these years with more and more removed and simplified from previous games. and now you dare ask this much of the casuals again?! Dude I dont have a college degree like you calm down there I only read about rams and siege towers in school. What do you wanna suggest next? that we can actually use armies without a leader to decide ourselves where we wanna garrison units?! Or perhaps an actual building system in the settlements thats not overly lacking? pfff my brain man

@@rinroarpog7809 Had to check because I didn't believe it, but they actually do!? I guess that goes to show how little most of us pay attention to the ladders, that being said they are very subtle changes, I think Chaos factions need something a bit flashier and stranger to make their "ladders" look less out of place. My initial idea I had was for Tzeench having what can only be described as *magical chair lift's*, with those "flying discs" ascending between a couple vertical polls caring their units instead of them physically climbing rungs.

Though I'm surprised that's all it took to distract people from complaining about the Tzeentch roster, though I'd say they'll forget about ladders and go back to complaining about that by the end of the week (if we don't find another new thing to complain about).

Fun fact: the changes to sieges were negative in the long run because now defenders can be destroyed by the time siege equipment finish because they made so defenders take damage every turn they are under siege unlike in old Warhammer games when sieges gave an X amount turns before defender takes damage from being under siege.

I used to love how when you built new and better buildings they would appear in the battle. You also had people walking around in Attila who would sometimes fight, Now only the main settlement building changes the look of the city.

@Byner Acct. Oh my god that would be absolutely amazing. All the people walking through the streets, there's the blacksmith and his workers hammering away making swords for your army. There's ships coming and going at the port, loading and unloading trade goods. There's archers practicing their aim. And that would just be for a boring human settlement. I can't imagine how cool it could be for the other races in the Warhammer Fantasy world. I hope they do add this feature back into the TW games at some point, it was one of my favourite things in R:TW and there's so much potential for it now compared to back then.

Maybe not, and could take some more time. But please understand sieges in WH2 became linear as hell because people asked for good AI. I for once prefer better sieges and siege maps with subpar AI, to terrible sieges with good AI.

No it will not, Ai is there to be slaughtered. If we had good AI, 90% of the playerbase would cry on the forums that AI is too punishing XD Like when CA made Horse Marauders pretty decent at skirmishing. + really good AI able to handle complex tactics would reduce your FPS down to 1. In fact sieges will be a lot easier now for a veteran total war player as there are many new things to abuse the AI with.

I doubt it. Maybe falling back to secondary locations instead of endlessly sending another squad up to the same ace to get bolted, cometed, or Kroak'd, but I assume the AI is still going to just stand there until you convince them otherwise. Just now, Lizardmen get to have dinosaurs build barricades and traps.

From today's blog about sieges. "We’ve also improved the AI, not only to handle all these new elements, but also to provide more of a challenge whether you’re attacking or defending. Flyers and fast-moving units will now prioritise useful actions like preventing sallied-out cavalry from attacking ranged or siege units. The AI also has a greater understanding of how different areas of the map are under threat, and when they should withdraw to prevent losses." "We started with the 3K AI as it provided us with a good base to work from, the 3K settlement AI had been very well received and worked well for our new settlement layouts. From there we put a lot of work in to how we author our siege AI graph to make it easier to design and more flexible to work with, which has also improved the pathfinding within settlements. With the introduction of the ‘districts’ concept via the capture locations and supply points, the AI can now separate and manage large parts of the settlement map and say, ‘this area over that area, this district is more threatened than that one.’ They can then prioritise or fall back if one is overtaken by the attacker. For the settlement battles they also know how to build towers and barricades, which is something they don’t have to do in Survival battles.” Without lots of gameplay, it remains to be seen if the changes they said they made will be meaningful or just talk.

Given the size and general layout of siege maps in the game I'm not even sure if wall-mounted artillery would be able to hit anything outside of stuff like Mortars, ranged units already have issues with trying to hit things or their shots getting eaten by the crenellations they're standing behind.

Alright looks good, looks like a mix between new and old stuff, looks promising to be honest. I started playing total war in rome 2 and then Attila, and those barricades, side streets and the possibility to put archers in places that act like walls remember me of those games. Keep it up

Construction time is pretty simple to tune though, we’ll have to wait and see but tbh I’m happy with any feature that exists in fullest then mods can always trim back easier then add new.

I'm hoping at least the overlooks they demonstrated the layers with will be an option for where to put artillery. They seem to be just part of another level of the map instead of being walls, so even if artillery can't dock the way missile infantry can, at least some artillery should be able to shoot from there.

Also i would have like to see the ability of putting artillery units on walls, at least for smaller artillery units like skaven ratlings and jezzails. But this is a great step in the right direction. Edit: At 0:50 you can see cathayan jezzails on the walls, so it looks like at least my dream of weapons teams on walls will be fulfilled.

When I played Warhammer as a child we often used some houses or a tower as terrain. So you'd e.g. keep your wizard safe by being on the tower, and put some handgunners in the house for protection. I hope they'll allow us to really make good use of buildings. It would be amazing to hide some handgunners in a house, and then have the house crushed by a Giant.

I imagine at the very least, the BIG old world settlements (Karak 8 Peaks, Altdorf, Naggarond etc) will get a rework at some point, but not straight away and most likely not all of them. Though they will be getting the options of barricades and other supply related shenanigans, so who knows, they might add in an extra street or 2 when altering the existing maps coding.

its something they've had in older titles, building defences in the streets was not uncommon and having internal tower points as well. the single wall made that not really feasible but i am very happy they are bringing it in.

@@heoj1N they had hoped to make the game much more easy for AI to handle sieges by having it concentrated on a single wall and not having so many things like in street barricades. this is a particular challenge for Total War Warhammer because of having so many asymmetrical units and functions not found in any other TW like flying units, Monsters and Magic. it didn't pan out however so seeing them giving a real effort is great to see and all on the scale of Warhammer with the whole of a city and its mega structures being included.

This does sound interesting, but I'm a little surprised by the direction they've taken, since the main complaint I heard about seiges in TWW2 was that there was no point trying to hold the walls, since your troops fight better if you abandon them and focus on guarding choke points instead. And now it seems like instead of making it easier to hold walls, CA have decided to double down on making choke points the way to go. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad decision (it'll likely be a lot more fun to use these new mechanics than it would be to just stick a bunch of troops on a wall and leave them to it), but it just strikes me as odd, given that basic common sense would suggest holding a wall ought to give you a much greater advantage than letting enemies make their way into the streets of your city... otherwise why would people even go to the effort of building walls in the first place?

The wider areas of the towers also contribute to that. I definitely see Seiges being that you put your cheapest and/or fastes units on the walls to get the towers working, then fall them back to the choke point once you've got that free damage in

tbf the changes to capture points will mean that you can hold more towers for longer, which may make fighting on the walls more viable as well

what I always saw people complian about was the lack of fallback points, the problem with walls is they are a little brainless, however we know little of how the stats of the walls, gates and towers are, they could easily increase the health of gates to try and make rams more viable, that would be a giant buff to the walls, wall health getting buffed is a much smaller buff, but with towers having larger capture zones that means they will be captured faster, and with less commitment, meaning they can fire and more will fire, with the maps not being the same we also can't tell for sure how the the front of the city is, it's possible we can vanguard deploy units infront of the walls, the new attacking equipment they mentioned wasn't specified so there is likely more then what we saw here

I like the idea of layered defences and supplies added to sieges. Now all that is missing is an AI that actually does siege attacks (unless they outnumber the player 10:1)

I didn't like the idea of supplies. It is immersion breaking. Why didn't the defender collect those supplies and built the defenses prior to the battle? How can they construct a tower in a minute? If they had such capabilities why didnt they collect more supplies and built a billion towers. I won't buy this game.

@@_greenrunner_ it's because a lot of the time direct artillery ends up being fairly useless for the defender in sieges due to all the obsticles. if you could have the artillery up on the walls then you'd be able to fire them at the attacker without any obsticles for a while until they reach the walls (at which point you'd get the artillery to fall back). also in the trailers for Total War Warhammer 1 Dwarfs were clearly shown with canons on their walls so it was rather disappointing that we weren't able to do it in game (we know it can be done since it was possible in previous Total War games)

Ive always thought sieges in general were too easy. Id like it if both sides had more hurdles they had to go through in order to successfully attack or defend. For example, setting up artillery on walls would take a turns worth of time, meaning you could not realistically prepare properly if you were attacked without much notice. Maybe not that exactly but Im sure you see my point.

They mention in the blog post about WH1 and WH2 factions having different styles of cities. And we've seen first hand that TW2 included instances of every TW1 race on the vortex maps. i'd say those two items together make it a safe bet that we are getting the mechanics for the older races. They might reuse some visuals though; like the traps.

Tbf, the ladders help with smoother gameplay in general and helps the AI be an actually challenge. It's weird for Skaven to be allies with dwarfs, but that still happens in the game too, or the fact Kholek doesn't literally TOWER of walls. Certain things you have to allow to make it a fun video game for everyone, casual and hardcore gamers/warhammer fans alike, so I'm personally fine with the ladders. Though I WOULD like ladders personalised for each faction, but at this point, it's just me being spoiled.

While it looks as though there are improvements on previous ideas, the fundamental concept of layered defense in siege battles is in no way new to Total War games... Medieval 2 and even Attila come to mind. That being said, I'm glad that large scale sieges seem to be making a return.

You will still bring artillery and make any AI siege defenses useless just like in every total war that had artillery... And there is nothing CA can do outside of removing artillery from the game. Or nerf it so much they might as well remove it.

defense in depth has never been optimal against the AI in a total war game, if you could win with defense in depth, you could win even easier by just massing on the walls. I hope they can get it right this time though.

@@mcmarkmarkson7115 That was literally the point of artillery bro... It was supposed to crush the otherwise impenetrable defence, sometimes used to start fires or disease in case of putrid corpses. Other method of taking the keep was encircling it and sitting there for 1 year hoping the defenders run out of food.

Big improvement, but the "siege ladders" still need work. It's weird enough seeing them suddenly appear, but it's even weirder seeing eldritch monstrosities use ladders.

hopefully if its a complete redo of the siege mechanic in game all cities may have something similar or at least main capital cities. This is my hope due to how they implemented the supply and tiered system in the game. Or iam completely wrong and its just for the new factions

Looks absolutely amazing! Some much needed improvements to sieges! I don’t want to sound ungrateful or that I’m complaining but I agree with what most people are saying about having ladders race specific! Such a little feature that would be such a huge immersive thing:)

Something I want the most: >Make ladders another siege item. No more ladders out the asses, and give us the option to push them down. Also being able to shoot the ladder carriers before they reach the walls helps tactically. And to complement that, have some units be able to scale walls without ladders. Goblin spiders, skaven assassins, maybe skinwolves, units like that! Double browny points if ethereal units could go through walls (albeit slowly or with some other balancing factor).

what can be said for CA is when they are talking about stuff they are planning to do they actually SHOW it in the game, even in clunky unfinished and 'staged' battles they let you see how stuff will look in game rather than just telling you about it.

@@Arthur-jx8bm it's very different, the problem with the initial walls is that you would have to use a lot of people to activate all the towers, making it easier to man all the towers is a big deal, that means you can make a much better defense at the walls, and once your walls are down. you have the points that encourage you to to hold the road systems rewarding you with extra supply to give you towers and other equipment

Looks like a solid improvement. Hope they rework all the old siege maps with the same features though. Always disappointed with the Dark Elf defences in particular. In lore their city’s are designed and built as fortress’s within fortress’s. In the game? There no more defendable then High Elf ones, which completely ignores the cultural difference between the two.

@@navajoalltheway Nah, more then this was in the old games. Remember the sieges of Medieval 2? Best of any total war game, by far. Warhammer Total War games really let themselves down in the sieges. So at this point, I will happily take any upgrade, no matter how small compared to past games.

The supply mechanic and internal structures leaves open the possibility of unique structures for each race. Perhaps ones that apply buffs, summon units, have mortis engine effects, etc. Hope you continue to develop and explore this as the game continues through its life cycle. Looks very promising so far!!

Awesome, love the design for the new maps, the tiered layers and the larger interiors! Still feels weird to see the ladders - I'd love to see some of the weirder monstrous units be able to scale walls outright. The barricade system looks like it could be a fun way to funnel the fighting. I'm hoping this will give some life to sieges in the longer campaigns.

I like what I see so far. The barricades may become a bit too much if the defender can spam them too easily, but thank you so much from moving the key part of the fighting away from the walls. Reminds me far more of Attila/Rome sieges where its a slog/battle of attrition and proper unit counters.

This looks great with one exception. Units still bring ladders out of nowere it seems. Just make ladders buildable siege equipement. You can maybe make it so they're fast to build and thus they build "instantaneusly" without having to siege for a turn, but still chipping away from the siege equipement resource per turn.

In the past the AI only recruited the minimal amount of ladders (back when they were siege equipment). That’s why it was removed. Could they fix that with the AI? Perhaps

The problem of the ladders is that whats the point of a wall if the enemy can get up whenever they want without any effort. It's supposed to be a chokepoint. Yes, it's fantasy, so it's okay to have things that can replace siege equipement. A big monster tearing the walls down, spiders climbing walls, ninja rats carring personal climb equipement... and so on. That's cool. That your average Imperial soldier carries a 15m ladder hidden in his back is not.

so far its everything i desired for the most part. the only things missing are for the attackers to be able to besiege better (how defenders have towers and small walls,etc) with their own equipment not just rams and towers second siege animation for daemons climbing instead of using ladders and lastly AI being capable of utilizing all these reworks

It would be freaking amazing if even the same settlement have some different siege layout depending on who's occupying it. Like when Karaz-a-Karak is occupied by Dwarves, it becomes a very hard and fortified city with lots of guns, cannons and rockets. When it is occupied by Greenskins, the walls and gates will be weaker and cannons will be replaced with arror towers, buth there yould be more traps and ambush site for goblins and WAAAGH facilities that provide some powerful buffs. When it is occupied by the Vampire Count add some magic towers, magical traps, and graveyards to replenish more undeads. But obviously I'd be asking too much.

Cautiously hopeful here. For once, this looks like a mashup between the Empire fortress maps but bigger and the assault/survival battles from earlier, both of which are fine. I hope melee units will be able to do something while on the barricades. I'm also hoping that Old World locations get a similar redesign for their sieges, and maybe even some faction specific defensive stuff? What if the different undead factions could summon units to stop the attackers from reaching the walls, or if a variety of units (ghouls, ghosts, spiders, etc.) could scale the walls without the need for ladders? And finally two questions I find myself asking a lot, can I dock artillery on the walls yet (maybe the inner walls) and can I pick my garrison instead of some pre-made awfulness?

You probably won't be able to put artillery on the walls. And it's the most stupid thing one can do anyway, so why bother working on it to make it possible? Cause it's cool? I guess. And you probably won't be able to pick your garrison either because that pre made awfulness is so the AI can handle it. If 200 AI factions get the ability to pick and choose their garrison, turn times would increase by a gazillion percent.

@@mcmarkmarkson7115 Artillery would make sense on the walls if the attackers didn't have ghost ladders. It'd actually make destroying towers and damaging attackers easier. And it would look cool. Just because the player is allowed to pick garrison the AI can have its craptastic stuff. It is scarcely able to merge units and get rid of old ones but we can do that so I don't see your problem. A lot of the garrisons are not only awful but don't include a variety of DLC units that are better than the ones you do get. Vampire Count minor settlements are a good example for a bad garrison. You also run into the problem (albeit relatively rarely) of having more units in the garrison than its limit would allow and that usually pushes out more useful units like monsters and artillery, instead of stupid chaff.

I agree that would be amazing, but tbh, I think they won't go with that, simply from the fact that the ladders end up as such a small part of the battlefield. Not to mention a lot of people (not myself) hate the magic ladders anyway, and would consider it as cleaning a turd.
