Accomplished mandolin player and singer/songwriter Sierra Hull stopped by the Reverb office to discuss influences and the origins of her distinct style. From Allison Krauss to Ricky Scaggs, Sierra has pulled from many influences and from them was born a style all her own.

Sierra is just as good as Chris Thile. If you don't know her and are looking for something new, get an album and see one of her live shows. Then convince a friend to do the same. These are the artists we should be supporting.

Not just a student of Chris Thile, but also influenced by the musical approach of Béla Fleck - who produced her latest "solo" album. She's matured by leaps & bounds since her 2008 debut.

i hear a little bit of similarity of Alison, in you 🙂 . I saw her in a very intimate concert setting, at the Cavalier Hotel in Va. Beach, many years ago. I was in the front row, just 10 feet from the band, in a small room with fold up chairs. I was blessed to experience that, and will always remember it. Her banjo player was amazingly talented.

I am a big fan of Sierra. I bought her CD weighted mind and it was unlike what I expected. It is a little dark and I expected something a little up tempo. But it definitely is quite an achievement, like nothing I've heard before!

Many thanks for posting this. I know nothing about Sierra, and next to nothing about bluegrass (although I have always quite liked it), but the lines that she was playing at 3.24 sound quite unusual to me harmonically - almost hearkening to North Indian (Hindustani) Classical Music (which I do know about). This has piqued my curiosity, and I am going to listen to more of Sierra.

Once someone’s so good, they don’t need affirmation from me. But IMO, she’s a crazy good mandolin player, innovative, and knows herself. The music world will have her influence for a long time. And she’s.pretty cute.

The female Chet Atkins of Mandolin. The boom chuck is great, but Chet always kept the melody out front. Sierra may someday be seen as the greatest Mandolin player the world has ever known.

It's like your playing progressive mandolin blue grass. Almost like progressive rock with the that rhythm blended with those progession/riffs/licks. Periphery does that. But they are prog metal, not prog bluegrass
