Man, those were the days. Me and my brother used to get so hyped if we saw a cossie on the road back then in the late 80s early 90s. As true as it is that they were supercar quick (almost) back then, the Japanese were also making some properly fast cars. 89 saw the release of the R32 GTR, Toyota already had the 1JZGTE in numerous models, Mazdas 13B turbo was in the S4 and S5 RX7, Mitsubishi had VR4 Galants and Subaru RS legacys. Hondas B16a VTEC engine released in 89 was a gem and the civics and integras that powered were featherweight. The golden era of cars for me. Should have snapped a few up 10 years ago before the price skyrocketed!
I remember being at Donnington on a track day with my mate in his golf VR 6 on a Monday after the touring cars. Paul radisich was there and Harvey ect, he was taking the owner of a sapphire cosy round the track 4 up and sideways everywhere bloody amazing skill. Unfortunately the owner must have thought it was easy I remember seeing it later and the back doors wouldn't shut as it hobbled out of the venue.Johnswell my maternity an excellent driver with a lot of track experience got well and truly stuffed we were going thru craner curves flat out when radisich came past us five up in another standard VR6 and preceeded to leave us in his fumes 💨 we couldn't believe it! Great video loved it 👌
It’s very well done at brooklands, I went to auto Italia there few years back, would definitely recommend to anyone interested in that sort of thing. Lovely grounds!
When I was in my late teens and early 20s I used to watch foreign movies just so I could see the European Fords. It was mind blowing how bad the small US Escorts and other Fords compared to what you had across the water. My Dad bought new 1980 Fiesta Sport and became my car. I installed Euro suspension, wheels, and other parts ordered from BAT and dreamed of the XR2!
@@richardstorier6172 HAD MALLARD BIG TURBO ESCORT IN GARAGE 25 YRS NOW NEVER SELLING ITPAID 15K WHEN LOW PRICES VALUED NOW 82K NICE INVESTMENTS AND HOOLIGAN MOBILES LOL LIKE MK2 RS2000 LOTUS SUNBEAMS GREAT CARS TO THROW ABOUT
2:36 I thought he was going to get a bit out of shape then but that was a nice bit of drifting by the Goff.
No blurred windows so you can’t see the professional driver doing the driving, no over dubbed music so we can’t hear the engine, no constant quick flicking from shot to shot just proper driving by the actual presenter and a chance to look at the car properly, they were the days for both cars and tv.
Some bloke got the UK land speed record for a production car years back in one of those , he tuned his Cossie to 1000bhp and hit 220 mph sadly the man who produced that magic passed away in 2018 but what a brilliant engine in that car
1980s TV producers: "Shall we make sure the car is at least clean before we point a camera at it? Y'know, because Ford might want it to look its best for potential buyers?" "Nah, fuck it! Drive it through rain-soaked pig farm before hand."
4:33 when is the last time you saw real engineers using one of those in the background? Oh, and polishing the ports, by hand. Do they do that today? Make sports cars lite again!
O remember a guy walking in to a police maintenance department at a Manchester police worksop in gorton Manchester and just nicking one ragged it around with light's and siren going and then torched it
Your right though. 19 grand was a lot of money back then. Every time I got close to owning a real RS the price went up. Should of bought the magenta red cosworth for 5 grand in 2009. It would be worth about 20 now.
Redline Ste It IS amazing how a good one has appreciated in value these days . Nowadays I just have to be happy to have my petrol Grand C Max re- mapped to 200 hp. Oh well...
The old Sapphire looks so soft & wallowing nowadays. Never the most dynamic of drives or great handling- it was all about the turbo power. Things have indeed moved on
jeppemichael true- but then you could buy contemporary 205 or Golf GTi’s that handled superbly- . Sierra had decent straight line go- but poor chassis dynamics
@@chrismc1977 Yep, the Sierra Sapphire RS when released already had a floorpan blueprint from a decade earlier, it had the torsional rigidity of a wet lettuce - the Escort Cosworth was the same, signed off in 89, and as as good as it looked, already had 80's architecture underneath with flexy semi trailing arms supported by a soggy rear beam, only the Group A boys sorted that out
msagoo29 exactly. A cult car, but road going versions only had horsepower & the ability to turn them up to attract the masses....still a Sierra in the twisties :-/
Back in the early nineties my mate had a BBR400 tuned Sapphire Cosworth. The fastest car I had ever been in. It would beat super bikes at traffic light grand prix. It ended up getting featured in Max Power magazine. Rocket ship of a car.
Johnswell is still a car nut he had a lancia delta 2.0 Hf integrale he took it to Santa pod to a run what you brung I think it was an all Italian night. He said he was holding it at about 5k revs at the lights and just dumping the cluch it was catapulting off the line and he was blowing everything away, a guy came over and asked if he would run against him in a safire cosie johnswell said no problem he told me he did exactly the same on the line he looked in the door mirror as he set off and seen the cosie fish tailing and smoke everywhere johnswell said he hit third gear and the cosie came past him like a missile turns out it was 500 hrspers 😂might have been yr mate. Strange thing is I remember when instance rocketed you couldn't give em away 🤙
Yeah I remember when 3drs was about 6 grand second hand. Insurance was huge. I had a Nova GSi in 1995 and that cost my 800 quid a year then and had to have a cat 1 alarm and immobiliser fitted or no Insurance company would cover me.

Topgear is a load of crap now. this was more informative years ago . those clowns on topgear playing with there toys that no one can afford like general public.that clown paddy mcguiness freddy who ever his name is . It's waste of time watching it now. it needs that old format back people with brains in the car trade like Mike brewer
Remember, they weren't 4000lbs either. New BMW X6 competition just arrived at our dealer. Horsepower over 600, weight, I can't count that high. It does sound fantastic though.
