Sieve Analysis of Soil by Astm c136
Definition "Distribution of particle into different sizes is called Sieve Analysis".
In Sieve analysis, we are using Sieves of Different Sizes these sieves distribute the particles according to this. It is one of the important tests to check the quality of the soil. Here we explain the detailed method of Sieve Analysis of Soil Astm c136.

Balance
Set of Sieves 2'' (inch), 1 1/2, 1'', 3/4, #4, #10, #40, #200
Mechanical Sieve Shaker ( Mechanical Sieve shaker is only used when the weight of the material is more than 20 kg otherwise we will use the manual method of Sieve Analysis of Soil)
Oven (110 +- 5 Degree Centigrade).

Sampling of Soil
First, we will take the material from Borrow Pit ( It is the area where we collect the sample). In sampling, we will take the sample from different places of the borrow pit.
PROCEDURE
SPLITTING
Firstly we will split the Soil sample with a splitter. If the splitter is not present then we can do it manually but we should give preference to the splitter to get more accurate results.
In manually splitting we will divide the sample into four equal parts. If it's weight is more then we will divide each part into four parts and take the required sample for sieve Analysis. Suppose we have taken 4000 grams of sample.
OVEN DRY FIELD SAMPLE
After taking the weight of 4212 grams of sample then put in the oven and adjust the temperature to 110-degree centigrade. When the sample dries then again weight the sample and calculate moisture Content.
Formula
Moisture Content = wt of water/wt of oven Dry Soil*100
Moisture Content = 116/4096*100
= 2.83 %
WASH THE SAMPLE
Now we will wash the Oven dry sample of 3996 g on # 200 sieve. In washing, all the clay will pass from # 200 Sieve.
The remaining sample will put in an oven for 24 hours. After 24 hours cool the sample and adjust the sieves for Sieve Analysis.
SIEVING
Arrange all sieves from higher to lower sizes i.e. 2'' (inch), 1 1/2, 1'', 3/4, #4, #10, #40, #200. Put Sample in 2-inch sieve and shake until all smaller size sample moves to 1 1/2 sieve. Similarly, do this for all sieves.
After sieving take retains the weight of all the sieves.
