I remember I saw a documentary on this accident and they interviewed controller Dupta. Of course he was thoroughly investigated and they tried to lay the blame on him because it's so much easier for everyone if a scapegoat is found soon. He was cleared at the end, but he was very much traumatized by the ordeal, and even though he knew he couldn't have avoided it, deep inside there's always a shadow of doubt, "what if...", that also tortured him. He had depression, started smoking, it had all sorts of consequences for him. He seemed to be a good man. When the documentary was made, he was still suspended from work. Now this video says he's not in active duty but teaching new controllers. I'm speculating, but based on what I saw, that was probably his own decision.

No! there was no perfect communication. Pilots didnt understand English. They had a translator behind. Translator was too late to inform the pilots about the 15k feet and vice versa even the pilots were too late to ask him about the altitude. The Kazakh plane kept dropping altitude. The clouds made the situation worse for both the planes. The Delhi Government is blamed for having only 1 corridor for the planes landing and takeoff. Other air space were reserved for Indian Airforce and the Delhi Airports technical equioments were too backward for the ATC to understand the altitude of the flights. Its unacceptable that they waited for the worst Air crash to happen to take this positive step of upgrading their technical equipments.

Keep in mind that this happened in 1996. Just a few years after the fall of the Soviet Union. The 1990's in Russia and all the recently freed satellite countries, it was the wild west. A complete breakdown in government institutions. You think the government in Khazastan had any sort of air safety ministry or enforcement of safety standards at that time??? Probably not, if they did I'm sure those officials were on the bribe. Doesn't surprise me one bit the pilots didn't know English, they never flew out of Soviet airspace before 1991, didn't need to know it. Travel was HEAVILY restricted/non-existent between the USSR and the west, the chance those pilots would have met english speaking people before the fall was 0%

It sounds like the captain of the Kazakh and ATC because the ATC is granting him not to descend even tho it could mostly see both of the planes on the radar. The pilots fault was because they decreased for landing to much so they can land and the ATC was little bit strict

The person giving signals(Vk dutta) to the plane wasnt found guilty as it was the fault of the Kazangastan air craft.
@andyb2087
@andyb2087 6 лет назад
True V K Dutta was not prosecuted, but he had a hard time till the complete report was published. There is another interesting fact about this crash, which was aired in news channel. Another military plane which was converted to cargo was enroute and witnessed a large ball of fire. They thought Indian air Force was attacking them due to the design of the plane. I remember bits and pieces, but will not forget the horrific news. I was in 7 the grade I think when this happened

@ati2010-c7f

But there were no reasons for prosecuting VK as he was operating an ill equipped control tower. Usually the first mistake was that there was not enough air space corridor for incoming and outgoing Planes. Most of airspace above that airport was for Indian air force. Those planes were not supposed to share the same airspace, to fly on the top of each other while they were in opposite heading

Dutta was not at fault at all. He did exactly what he had to. How would he know the Kazak was descending beyond the assigned flight level as no SSR was there at Delhi. So yaa.. Clearly its the fault of the Kazak flight crew

@@lemons20 more problems than 2, I would say... most of those airports also did not operate arrivals and departures from the same quarter (that was done only with good following, & only where something limited the usable airspace)... here takeoffs were limited by government no-fly zones over central Delhi and a vast military only airspace to allow for the bases used to protect the capital. only a narrow civilian corridor remained.

My dad's a former first responder and I asked him about this crash and how anyone could've initially survived it. He's never had to show up to aviation incidents, but he said the case reminded him of an accident in the 90s. Basically in our city, there was a criminal on the run (pretty sure it was just gang charges). He was struck by a train and because of the way the rails sloped + other factors, he wasn't crushed by the vehicle. Instead, he was launched towards a brick wall, and slammed into it at easily 30 mph. Miraculously, when my dad found him, he was alive. In fact, he looked pretty damn good for someone who had been hit by a train and thrown across the train yard into a wall. Abrasions, broken limbs, missing teeth, bruises, that stuff. But he was still alive. Unfortunately, he died on the way to the hospital, and his autopsy revealed that pretty much everything inside of him turned to mush. His organs, muscles, bones, all ripped apart. He may have survived that initial impact, but there was no way he could've survived the whole ordeal. Anyways, the point is, my dad said that's probably what happened here. Their bodies were resilient enough to withstand the crash itself, but they had no chance at surviving the incident. Because on the outside, they seem alright. But everything inside is just destroyed.

I was 10 years old. This mishap happened in our village as well as near by villages. My father was village Sarpanch at that time. We were sitting in front of our house with a group of around 20 people. Everything was as usual for us. Around 7:00 or 7:30. Big light seems in sky. We all thought there is fire in another part of village but within some second our entire group realised that it was a air crash. Totally hussle bustle start in our village. People were running in unknown direction due to fear. We also run behind it. Railway line is also near by our village. We it fall down, it " Malba" spread in every direction. On that day a Plan has many engines. One of it engine fall down in our village street. It was exactly in street between two houses. It one engine in the size of railway couch fall down on railway track. Just five minutes before Rewari- Hissar passanger train passed the track. Another one was just leaving Ch. Dadri station but it was stopped in mid. Nearby village people run towards the spot, and not nearby people only but run from far away distance also with their avail convience. One of my cousin brother came from 25 kms by running. But it was fall down between five villages( Patuwas, Mehrana, Dhani Phogat, Tikan Kalan and Kheri Sanwal) and a city (Ch. Dadri). If it was fall down out on any village and town and casualty could be turn in thousands. My father and village many people were on accident spot to help admistration during this mishap. But i was not allowed to go there during night time. Next day i went here with my uncle. It was very tify scene ever never seen me. Deadbody were scattered in fields, on trees and many more. It one pilot was on his chair much behind the main spot. Two more young guys deadbody were near his chair. H.D Devhora was prime minister at that time. He also visited the spot. He clearly know his helicopter land in our school ground. We were seeming him from our classroom window. Ch. Dadri civil hospital totally converted in deadbodies. Victims relatives were coming to know about thier known. But no one survive in that accident. RIP all those who lost their lives during this mishap.

Some other facts: 1) Illyushin was a military carrier converted for civil usage, as can be seen, the radio operator's bench is located at a weird position, and it is also a known fact that cabin had ego issues, captains and first officers looked at the radio operators with disdain, often ignoring their strong messages 2) Sadly, Saudi plane mostly had poor blue collar jobs people, who were traveling to the gulf in pursuit of a better life for their families, some stories are so tragic that they crack opens the heart!!! Aftermath: 1) Much of the air space across New Delhi was 'reserved' for airforce at that time, leaving very small corridor for commercial flights, this was rectified later 2) Secondary radar at IG airport was actually present at the airport, just was eating dust in warehouse, without being installed, ironically, it would take another several years that secondary radar could be finally installed

If the death total is still among the 3 highest ever and most for a mid-air collision and I believe it still is, all 3 involved Boeing 747's. Sadly that was one of the major concerns when the first jumbo jets were built in the late 1960's, The staggering loss of life when they eventually and inevitably crashed. Overall, the 747 has been an extremely reliable aircraft but after 50 years in the sky they have been involved in some unforgettable accidents.

Just a few seconds from impact, the Kazakh plane climbed slightly and the two planes collided. This was because the radio operator of Kazakhstan 1907 discovered only then that they were not at 15,000 feet and asked the pilot to climb. The captain gave orders for full throttle, and the plane climbed, only to hit the oncoming Saudi plane. Had the Kazakh pilots not climbed slightly, it is likely that they would have passed under the Saudi plane.

The most scary thing for me is that the flight number of the smaller plane is 1907, exactly the same of the Boeing 737 owned by GOL Airlines which was lost ALSO due to a mid-air collision with an Embraer jetliner owned by US executive airline Excell Air, above the Amazonian Jungle in September 29th 2006, almost 10 years after the catastrophe depicted in this video. It was Brazil's worst aviation disaster at the time, with 154 lives lost. The coincidences are unreal.

Witch 1 Just don't understand the correlation. Is 20 years a magic number? Should they only be remembered at end of decades? It seems like cause a certain amount of time passes, it's officially correct to remember them. Weird as some replies of people telling us they took the flight right before that, or they lived next to the airport where it happened.

Well, India should at least get a new Air Traffic Controller. Also, this is why every plane (yes, including the IL-76) should have the TCAS system, not the ATC. If you followed the ATC, you’d end up with the Überlingen mid-air collision, or even worse, this.

Sarah Riedel that was 1996 and Kazakh planes were mainly Soviet leftovers. India also opened itself to the world after 1992 economic crisis. So the organizations, infrastructure and technology of these two countries were primarily obsolete or in process of modernization. These countries were predominantly socialists with huge spendings on welfare schemes so they had little to spend on these things.

I am so excited to see some young person also excited on plane crashes and just planes in general. Tbh I would love to become a pilot when I grow up, or at least an air traffic controller. I want to because I feel like there isn't as many female pilots as male pilots and I want to change that. Some people say that make pilots are safer; but that's bullshit. I hope I'm still into planes when I grow older, because I love your videos and air crash investigation. And they don't scare me off planes like other people. It actually makes me want to go on them more. Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to make my voice heard. Thanks Allec for taking your time out of your day to make these amazing videos ❤️

I was thinking... Wouldn't it be soothing if every cockpit had an option to play some Bach or maybe, Chopin, as the plane is descending helplessly to Earth? I mean, if the pilots already know that they are going down, wouldn't it be more dignified if they went out with some of the greatest music ever made, instead of those god awful, beeping alarms?!? Seriously, just think about it... Say, you are a pilot and your wing has just been clipped in a mid-air collision. WHAT is your choice? To go down while those shrieking alarms are beeping all around you, or to have Bach's "St.Matthew's Passion" accompany you to the hereafter? And it's super easy to install!
