I was going to review this new Sigma 10-18mm for Fujifilm X mount but I realized that there are 2 other lenses in the mix and I'd be good to take a look at all 3 these lenses.

A few other factors to consider, too: 1) only the Fuji lens zooms internally 2) the Fuji has built-in stabilization 3) the close focussing distance on the Fuji is a fair bit longer, I think 4) the quality of the bokeh (although not a huge factor in an ultrawide, obviously 5) the quality of the sunstars (the Fuji is kind of meh in this respect) 6) I think (but not sure) that only the Fuji has an aperture ring - then again, the mark 2 version of the Fuji is definitely the only one with aperture markings…

Thanks for the extra info 👍🏼 Yes first gen had no markings, mark II does. Cheers!

Over here in Singapore, the street prices aren't quite as good as you could get on your side of the pond. The Sigma is significantly cheaper than the other 2 lenses though. Fujifilm does provide some freebies when you buy locally - typically, this would be a lens pouch & a lens servicing voucher for lenses; for cameras, they usually give out SD cards, camera bag, lens loan voucher, workshops, and free prints. Prices excluding GST/ VAT (8% currently but will be 9% in a few weeks). Fuji 10-24mm ~USD1049/- Sigma 10-18mm ~USD558/- Tamron 11-20mm ~USD873/-

I will pick it up tomorrow, trading in the 14mm f/2.8, which has been barely used. I also have the Fuji 10-24 I--quite good--but I wanted a lighter package for my weekend with 18-55 2.8-4 and Sigma 10-18 with my XE3. Thanks for your review.

@@cris_photography Hi Cris, I have receuved it and used it. it's a little jewel and sharpness is exceptional in the frame center. Very satisfied. I traded in the 14mm f/2.8 which almost never used

I heard the Sigma was only weather sealed at the mount, but not internally like the Tamron and the WR version of the XF 10-24. That would mean that it's still at risk for dust and moisture. Also, you can find the non WR 1st gen version of the XF 10-24 used for about $400 in excellent shape, while the Tamron and Sigma are both new enough that you're looking at MSRP, so if you don't need weather sealing or the faster aperture you can save a lot on the Fuji.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 7 месяцев назад
Thanks and that's right, only a gasket at the mount. If I have to be very honest (and I do) I never had any issue with a non-WR lens EVER. I feel like the WR is an important option to some but definitely and by all means not a must. You might be someone that shoots in humid and/or dusty environments but personally for my shooting style that ain't a deal breaker at all. I agree on the first gen Fujinon (which I still own and I used for this review basically) it can be found for a very competitive price on the second hand market. The sigma's overall footprint is unbeatable though and that's its strongest pro vs the other two. Thanks for the comment and take care!

A wide angle can be very useful for events and creative portraits if you know what you are doing. Then the f2.8 is a big advantage.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 7 месяцев назад
Absolutely. You can also shoot at say ISO 800 instead of 400 and you get your stop back from f2.8 to f4. Unless you’re really close (I advice against it when shooting a human, animal, etc.) the DOF won’t change that much from 2.8 to 4. Or even go 1/60 vs 1/125 and again gain the stop back. How’s f2.8 that big an advantage for event photography vs f4? In my years of experience shooting 3-4 events per week including weddings, corporate and more, I pretty much always used an aperture that starts around f4-5.6 when shooting wide because a) I want more DOF to get everyone in focus as much as possible and b) I use tripods often and can lower my shutter speed as needed (and cameras are better and better in high ISOs).

@@cris_photographyI do music and events that are often very low light and I feel the big difference in my lenses when shooting f/4. Significantly less light than my f1.4 primes. Obviously that's not 2.8-4 but low light stuff gets tough when you have f4 because you have to crank the iso

I'm actually looking to compare the Sigma IQ against the Viltrox 13 (where I would just do quick Pano's if I need to go wider) especially on the new 40mp Sensors.

Hi Cris, I don't know what your experience with the Tamron is but I tried it on a X-S20 and was quite pleased with the results. When I put it on the XT5 not so good. I find the fuji 10-24 (first edition) better suited to the 40mp sensor. It will be interesting to see how the Sigma performs on the XT5.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! I did not try it on a new sensor (still rocking my good old XT2 and XT3) but I believe you on the fact that the first gen is good for those (great lens - shot tens of thousands of photos with it). Take care!
@seymourecarnage
@seymourecarnage 7 месяцев назад
I read that there is nothing new optically on the updated 10-24 so it does not fully resolve the 40mp sensor, but you won't notice without massive cropping and pixel peeping.
@fotografalexandernikolis
@fotografalexandernikolis Месяц назад
"When I put it on the XT5 not so good" Keep in mind that you're not actually losing TOTAL image detail, only detail relative to pixel size thanks to the higher resolution. At the same viewing size you will obviously not lose anything. With that said the Sigma is better optically than the Tamron.

One other point is that the Fuji has image stabilization. That means you may not need to carry the extra weight of a tripod. In fact I have never used a tripod with this lens either for landscape or architectural photography.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 7 месяцев назад
Very true. That said, for real estate you will want to lower your shutter speed due to a smaller aperture (f8-f11) and often you’ll need a tripod to do bracketing which means that OIS or not (in fact on a tripod I disable it) the photos will be stable. For a walk, etc. It’s a very good point though - thanks you for bringing that up!
@tizio54
@tizio54 7 месяцев назад
And with IBIS one can probably leave the tripod at home with any of these lenses.

Hello 👋🏼 it really depends what you’re going for and what look you want. I personally range between 10 and 15mm when I shoot RE but some like to have a closer crop. But the sigma I think is good for most RE shots. Take care!

How do these lenses stack up to each other with regards to: - Sharpness at typical landscape FOV and apertures (5.6 and above) - Flaring - Sunstars Would be interesting to see a video with more head to head pixel-peeping technical-obsessive comparisons between these lenses since you have them all on hand :)

Would you choose the sigma over, say a 350 dollar used 10-24? Currently there’s a lot in the used market. It may have to come down to whether the maximum aperture and more compact size is worth the cost.

I am very confused between sigma 10-18 + sigma 18-50 or tamron 11-20 + tamron 17-70 needs for architecture, travel, landscape photography. Do you have any suggestions on which one should I choose? Thanks 🙏🏻

Hi, thanks for the video:) Does it lose focus when you zoom in/out, especially while recording video ? or have you noticed any light change when you zoom in/out during video shooting ?
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 29 дней назад
Hello! Yes it does (being a Fuji camera and not a Canon or Sony the AF isn’t that good). Otherwise if you’re in manual mode and manual focus there won’t be changes of light or focus. And that’s the way I normally film. Cheers!

Wonder why you didn't cover the Fuji 8-16
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 7 месяцев назад
Because 8 goes under 10 which is the minimum of the 3 and 16 is under 18 which is under the max of the 3. The 8-16 really is an Astro photography lens (can’t see another reason to buy such a huge lens - never even considered that lens really). Also the size is more that’s twice the heaviest lens of the bunch!
