i bought this lens before i went to osaka. ive always use my 17 to 50mm f2.8 lens for travel videos, but this lens change the whole game, specially on making some brolls!.plus, its super cheap for what it can do.
You sold me this lens. I had it in my basket and wanted to watch some reviews before clicking buy. I watched about half of this video, saw the portraits of your partner and went and bought it straight away. Thanks dunna!
Haha nice! I’m super glad to help Rhys! Portraits are a bit different with this one but they definitely can be done and look stunning when done right! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
I've bought this lens recently and have been using it for some time with a6400. It sure is great lens. Video looks good even with 4k you can tell the difference. The only problem I have is that it distorts edges with 1.4-1.8. Strangly it shows only with photo, video is ok. Its just a minor issue and its not a problem for me. I like the quite, fast and relible autofocus. I'm glad I watched your video.
There is a setting in the camera that might correct the distortion automatically. But definitely if you’re editing photos in Lightroom, there is a lens profile to correct that!
@@dunnadidit honestly it really is! i mostly got the camera for twitch streaming. but i figured why limit myself to just that when i have a device that seems to be well respected in the photography world.
Really liked this video, I shoot on an a7iii with a 24-105 G OSS as my main camera but I really need a wide angle for my secondary a6500, I think u sold me
After watching this video I ended up buying this lens. This is what I needed to push me over the edge and get this lens. Thanks a bunch man. Dig your videos.
Just received my copy of this lens today and boy it is good. Extremely sharp even wide open, step it down a couple of notches and its even sharper. Just took several city scapes tonight at sunset and they all came out pin sharp. Very impressed. Not sure if the 30mm is as sharp as the 16mm but I am tempted to find out.
I just picked up an a6400 and I've been wanting a low aperture wide-angle lens and this seems perfect! Glad to know it has solid AF as well. Wish it had some stabilization though.
Just subscribed. You include in 2018 info for a6000 which so many people still have and use. You did not stay on specs but even tested and showed stabilization on a real world scenario. A little hyper energy at some points, maybe it's the high tempo of the music. But overall a great useful insight. Thank you
I have the A6000 plus the Sigma and I'm very happy with it, it's fantastic for low light situations but sometimes too shallow depth of field if you take a picture of a group at the Christmas dinner table. If you do need to use flash then one minor drawback is that it blocks out the lower left part of the photo so you have to manually tilt the flash a little bit.
Yeah that’s definitely true, the on camera flash only really fully works with tiny lenses. The 16mm is not a large lens in the grand scheme of things but it still gets in the way. I only think I’ve ever used the on camera flash once on any of my Sony cameras though so it definitely hasn’t been an issue for me. Sorry it’s causing trouble for you!
Damnnn son, I have to say this is one of the most descriptive videos out there. Straight to the point, great examples and explanations. So good I’m tripping out hhaha subscribed!
Hey Dunna ! Totally agree with you ! Since i've got mine, i've shoot 90% of the time with it ! During my trip to Vancouver it was always on my a6500, just a perfect combo ! See you soon Man !
Also i've just released a new video on my channel, a "What's in my bag" for my trip to Canada if you want ideas on what you could get next to improve your kit maybe ?
That’s awesome! It really is a killer combination isn’t it. And for gimbal work... wooo! I wish I had my gimbal out when I was making this video now. I would have loved to show that setup too.
Oh yes, i didn't know you have a gimbal ! I speak only for myself, but i believe in handeld, haha. I really like the way it feels in the video ( of course if you not shake as a sick guy, but if you know how to be steady enough, and with the stabilization in the a6500, it's just perfect for my kind of cinematic vlog style videos..) After my two last video speaking in front of a table inside my flat, i've realized that this is not what i like to do.. So, i guess everyone has his/her own way to tell stories, mine is outside with my camera in my hand, haha ! See you soon Man ! keep working on your vidéos, they are really great to watch !
Haha yes I have the zhiyun crane v2 although it rarely gets used! I really only try to pull it out if I have a specific purpose for it. Other than that, I’m with you! Ibis in the a6500 and a few little hacks to keep things smooth. And I’m good to go! I totally get what you mean about the sit down videos. I think I enjoy doing both! Sometimes I don’t want the trouble of running around and it’s nice to just talk in one place. But sometimes it’s nice to adventure a bit!Cheers man! Thanks for the chat! I’ll see you in the next one!
Proud owner of this lens! Amazing lens. I do almost everything w it. Vlogging, landscape, timelapses, astrophotography, potraits. Talk about 1 lens for all.
Yeah it could totally work for that, I think that has more to do with understanding shutter speeds than anything. But it would be wide enough to get a whole car in!
the sony a6000 is still a good camera. i filmed my hongkong trip with it and it is still good. that lens is soldout in stores here in the Philippines!. i hope i can get one soon!
I totally agree! I still use mine all the time!! It felt like it took forever to get them in Canada too because they sold out immediately! But after a few months they came back!
Thanks so much Steeve! Greetings from Canada! Yeah, you definitely have some things to keep in mind but I’ve really liked all the portraits that I’ve taken with this lens!
@@dunnadidit I have no problems what so ever... I manuuueeeeever wit this joint. It's a very good all around lens for me. I just did some stuff with Bizzy Bone in Florida last Wednesday and Only used this lens.
Hey Dunna, you are awesome bro! ❤️ I was still deciding if I need the lens or not. But since you have recommended it several times I trust you because the end results look good. I using the a6400 and this will be great addition to my lenses. Keep up the good work, thank you! 😊 👍
A lot of people's only con about this lens is the weight but man, I have to say, just like you, I like the weight. Definitely feels like you have a tough, great built, quality lens in your hands. I feel like a light weight lens would make it feel kinda cheap
Regarding who this lens is for, I can suggest one specific use case. If you are planning to visit Europe and photograph cathedrals, they often have dim light and also benefit from a wide angle lens. You cannot always back up to get the shot.
Great video man, really appreciate the real-life test scenarios. Just getting into this stuff but primarily doing architecture and wide cityscape views, so I'll definitely be considering this one.
This lens is the one next on my list. I’ve been buying vintage lenses for my 6500 but I need a wide angle lens with nice aperture since I do a lot of low light. Thanks for video, it really helped and btw great photo edits.
Dunna you did it, the whole episode is Dope, the sound is on another level. I'm looking at the Canon side of cameras, can you do something on that? The T6i.
Hey Obie! Thanks so much! Little fun fact! I recorded all of the audio on this video with a lab mic taped inside my shirt, recording into an app on my phone! I think I’ll make a video about it! I don’t know a lot of the selections for the canon side of things but I know the sigma 18-35 is one of the most popular lenses of all time and it’s made for canon mount! Definitely check that one out!
Great review(er). Thorough and dynamic. Fell asleep during the last reviewer showing the lens statically for 15', while just talking...no photo/video examples, nothing. Great work.
this is the best review of this lens, everyone else focus on the video ability of it, but you also touched a lot on the photo side of it, with good examples. I have an a6000, and I'm into photography only, and was worried about the non image stabilization o it, but with your short and clear input there,. I'm going to get it. thanks.
Thank you so much Ramon! I’m so glad that you think that about my review! And I’m very excited for you to get the lens! If you feel like helping out the channel, there is an affiliate link for the lens in the description of the video! Thanks again for watching and let me know if you have any questions!!
Thankyou for this review man! This is the first time i have seen one of your videos, but if they are all this in-depth, high quality and high energy, this will definitely be my go-to channel for reviews (and many more people hopefully). I watch a ton of Jared Polin for comparisons, but will for sure come here for more reviews.
I was recently in Japan and thought about buying this lense, but I mostly use my fullframe A7 III and i have a zeiss 16-35, so i allready have this focal length covered, because of that i forgot about this lens pretty quickly. I have a a6300 as a secondary camera and after i saw this video i kind of regret not buing one especially since it is almost 100€ cheaper in Japan (so it just costs 300€ there). At the same time, i think, that i am more interested in a fast prime with this focal length not this lens especially , so i might save up some cash and eventually buy a 24mm 1.4 or similar for my a7. (i bought an 50mm 1.1 instead for 250€ wich is a killer deal as well)
Nice! I totally understand the back and forth on decisions like that! There will always be deals and stuff if you decide to change your mind and get it though!
For the NON-IBIS people, get a 300 bucks gimbal (theres a "somthing A1000" out there that would do a good job). Will beat any IBIS on any sony camera out there.
Yeah, depending on what you’re shooting a gimbal would be perfect for this lens! It makes a huge difference! It doesn’t make sense in every situation but it is definitely way more smooth than ibis or oss.
One thing I don't understand is why reviewers say once you stop it down its sharp. I have other lenses that can do F4 etc. Like my Sony 10-18 I buy 1.4 to use at 1.4. But a good review
We’re comparing the differences when using the lens with different Aputures I have some f1.4 lenses but if I’m shooting a landscape and I want more depth of field, I’ll shoot at f8. So then knowing the settings that you get optimal sharpness or where you might be sacrificing some sharpness.from the lens can be handy.
Are you the lost peter McKinnon brother? Hahahaha you looks like him anyways excellent video good explanation about the lens because I deciding between this one or the 10-18, is a hard choice, for you which one is better? And can you upload a video how you color grading your footage I love the CG and thanks! Keep it up dude good video !
Hahahaha that’s a new one! People have told me I look like him before but never asked if I was the lost brother lol. Yeah the 10-18 looks pretty awesome, although sometimes f4 just leaves something to the imagination and doesn’t quite do it for low light. However, a lot of people really love that lens so there must be something to it! I do love my 16mm though so I’d vote for that one! I am definitely going to do some color grading videos in the future! Thanks for asking! And thanks for watching!
Great video mate! Really helped my decision for my a6400. I've been using the kit lens 18-135mm. It's been quite limiting for my needs. I was looking for something wider that doesn't break the bank. Or try the Sony E - 10- 18mm. Hmmm? 🤔 Either way. Thanks for this video. Still great 4 years later!
Thank you so much! It’s cool what you can do when you give yourself those limits to stick to... “today I’m shooting with only 16mm but I want these portraits” so you just have to figure it out! And what you end up with is something really interesting and different because you had to challenge yourself!
Thanks so much! I have a few lightroom tutorials but I’m planning on doing more! Here’s one that is a general overview of my lightroom process(a few months ago... needs updating lol) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ar4BhGxxo8c.html
Great review and examples dude! I've had this lens for almost a year now but your thumbnail was too enticing not to click!🙌 I think the thing I love the most about this lens is the fact that it's SO fast for such a wide lens, that you almost get a full frame aesthetic from the images, despite being on a 1.5x crop.
@@dunnadidit Ive got the Sony 18-135 but would this lens be worth getting as i also shoot everything mentioned above? lens looks amazing just dont know if i need it along side the 18-135!! P.S.. Awesome vid dude
I would say one or the other is great! If you’re mostly doing photography, the 18-135 might actually be the better option. I love the constant f4 but it’s he extra reach would be cool too.
I was eyeing the 30 & 56, never saw the point of the 16 for some reason. Until I saw your video. Now I understand why Sigma sells for so cheap, because the get free marketing from enthusiasts such as yourself who literally do most of their work for them. Infact, they ought to sponsor you or maybe let u test out their unreleased products, to give comprehensive feedback.
Haha of sigma wants to sponsor a video I probably would say yes... it just wouldn’t be a review video of one of their lenses because that’s a little sketchy haha
Wooo! INSTA SQUAD!! Thanks so much for the question! I’m glad I could answer it! And I will definitely have some more lightroom stuff coming. My video list is starting to get too big!
