When it comes to fast wide angle lenses there are a few options out there. You can stick with the Canon or Nikon versions that run over $1,000 or you can look into the Sigma and Tamron 17-50 2.8s for much less.
In this case I am reviewing the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS which runs $669.99 at Allen's Camera. Who is this lens for? This lens is for the new and up and coming photographer with the Canon Rebels or Nikon D3100 D5100 and possibly the D7000. This lens is one of the first two lenses that I see being in a photographers bag. This lens will work hand and hand with a 70-200 giving you full coverage from 17 all the way to 200mm in a 2.8 lens.

Sigma have a tighter click than Canon and Nikon. You need to force the twist otherwise it's not locked properly.

@JaredPolin which lens would you recommend for using beside the Nikkor 35mm 2.0 on a 2nd camera? I have only the 35mm and a 50mm and I'd like to have zoom lens. Not sure which one makes similar looking videos

I just got this lens for my D7100, I've had it for 2 weeks. Its a GREAT lens for "$800" or $400 on ebay; which I did. I've got 7 other lens, 5 nikons 2 sigmas. Most over $700. This is my fav lens!!! Buy this! Great day-out / travel lens.

@brandonbush1 thanks for pointing that out, I forgot that that lens did not have the nano coating.

is there any difference in quality between this one and the Nikkor 35mm 2.0 (which I use in the moment). In need another lens for my d7000. I use it 95% for videos in a studio

Hi Jared, i can explain the fall off at the Edges. The Sigma is not perfectly planar corrected. That means the Focus area is not a plain but an orb. Objects that have the same Distance to the Camera are sharp. A plain surface like the table becomes soft at the Edges because the Distance to the Camera is longer an the area out of focus. This effect becomes weaker at the long end. So at 17mm with shallow depth of field you can get everything into focus by positioning it in a bow.

@corpsemunger you may need to manually set your meter but as long as its the same mount it should work.

Apparently... the lens hood issue has been fixed by December 2018. I just bought (I feel like I stole) it for $285 new this month from B&H. On my D3300... that I seem to not feel the need to upgrade from... the colors and sharpness from the kit lens it replaces are noticed by even non photographers. This is a keeper for sure. I don't think I'll ever "upgrade" to full frame. For a crop sensor lens... it doesn't get much better than this. Very highly recommended for the enthusiast / hobby photographer. If I work with it a little bit, I (as a guy that use to shoot film and dabble in the darkroom) can get some fantastic shots of stuff no one else cares about. I won't get rid of it... even if I upgrade to the D7200 (now OOP) ... that is the plan. Happy shooting!

Can you review Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM C Canon?

@29erfast yes thats right sorry used the wrong word.

I've got the older 18-50mm non HSM version of this lens and i love it. The difference between it and the kit lens is remarkable, and being able to shoot at f/2.8 is a life saver at gigs.
