This can possibly be the best upgrade from your nikon kit lens if you wanna jump into event and indoor photography thanks to the wide aperture that let you keep the ISO low. Suitable also for landscape, even thought I would rather look for a wide angle vintage prime (cheap, great quality and sharp).
The Sigma 17-50 is a considerable upgrade in terms of quality. Build quality feels much better than the Nikon Kit lens and it is definetely sharper with much better performance as regards colors and fringing.
The lens feature a good optical stabilizer that gives you more than two stops of advantage. When shooting video, this is a saving grace.

Even though this is a public PC, I decided to sign in to post this comment, after reading some negative comments down. IMO this is one of the most straight forward review about the Sigma 17-50. I was so confused before buying this lens, and this video totally, undoubtedly cleared all my questions. About it's prime usage, whether it's a lens for landscapes or no, how is the artistic effect- you covered everything very well. Thanks a lot for this video.

The review was amazing! Just what I was looking for before buying the lens. I really liked the explanation and the tests you performed. But I think you might've missed out on the autofocus aspect 😅. Good luck for the channel growth 👍 and hope to see more reviews and content. Thanks

Yey! A new video! I'm really hoping to hear someone go indepth with the 35mm 1.8 dx for video work, like how the focus ring handles and whatnot. I remember you talking about it a little bit before, but I'm hoping for more info on it. Keep up the great work, man!

great to know my review helped! I have several fast primes that I love for video, however, none of them beats the versatility of this lens due to the zoom range, fast aperture and image stabilisation! It is my favourite all around travel and run and gun lens!

Nice video. I think it would tell most viewers how this lens would fit their priorities. As a one-man band doing video interviews I find fast zooms really speed up the framing process. And this one is good quality on a budget. Plus it'll work on crop sensor DSLRs and MFT bodies (with adapter). Lot of value there.

How does this lens' image quality compare to Nikon 50mm or 35mm 1.8G?
@peterw1878
@peterw1878 5 лет назад
I think that the reason someone would buy this lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens is not the sharpness but the 2.8 constant aperture. That being said, perhaps it would have been more illustrative if the comparisons were made to highlight the low light performance between the two and also the video performance when zooming.
@LuigiVN
@LuigiVN 5 лет назад
THe 17-50 has better sharpness. Even wide open. If you put it at the same apertures a kit lens would work at, it is vastly superior. The onyl bad thing about this lens is that the focus motor is a bit slow and the ring has like 45 degrees of turning. And the AF motor is not very accurate. I have to use it with Live View to get constantly good focusing. If not it's a mixed bag and not good enough.

I had the same problems you had with yuor prime lens several times, and I have 35mm f1.8, a little wider, but not always usable, sometimes it's better a lens that can give you that shot, against the best lens you have

Hello! Could you please give me a piece of advice? )) I have a standard canon 18-55 lens, I want to change it to a more high-aperture one. I take pictures of my kid, she is always in motion, often at home, where the lighting is weak and I have to turn up the iso to freeze motion at a short shutter speed. As a result, the quality of the photo is awful. And I also like to take pictures of landscapes, but this happens from time to time. What lens would you advise to buy? Now I consider the canon 35 mm f2, it is not cheap, so I don’t want to regret it later. Is this fix lens suitable for portrait and landscape shooting, as well as for video? Or it's better to by sigma 17-50? Thanks a lot if anybody answers!

Hi Newpix! Great Video! :) I have one question. I'm a total noob in photography, so i'm interested how you edited the photos you showed at the end. Do you use a filter on these shots, similar to LUTs in video-post-editing or how are you color-grading your photos?
@newpix7555
@newpix7555 6 лет назад
Hi Crawling8888! Welcome to the photography world! As regards the pictures, no polariser filters were used. I only used a 10 stop ND filter from Walimex that I have bought on amazon. As regards the post processing I do not use any LUTs or presets. Most of it was increasing shadows and decreasing highlights to balance sky and foreground. Then add clarity and saturation. finally to make really the sky pop out I used a graduated filter in Lightoom to lower further the exposure, a bit of dehazing on it. :)
@Crawling8888
@Crawling8888 6 лет назад
Newpix Wow, thank you! I'll try that out! Your pictures are absolutely awesome, I honestly didn't think that my Nikon D5300 could do that. Really impressive with that Sigma lens and a few post-processing steps :) I hope not to bore you but I've got another question: Do you pay for some plug-ins in lightroom or do you only use the standard stuff? I'm not familiar with lightroom yet, but I can use it because my girlfriend has all the adobe creative programs from her school :D

Well, primarily for video I do not know. It is very sharp and nice, however for video you cannot use autofocus since it is too unreliable on Nikon for video mode and also noisy. For video purposes I would try to get an old wide prime and stick with it. But if you have the budget, go for it, you can do much more with this versatile zoom (events, people, landscapes).

Well first of all, check the light pollution map. For my location, I don't need to go further than 20 km. Second, the light polluted area must be out of the direction you're shooting. for example, if you're shooting Polaris, that is towards the north, the light polluted region must not be in the north.

The reason why you think it's not 50mm, it's because you aren't focusing to infinity. This lens has quite a bit of focus breathing, that's why you get more magnification from your Nikon lens if you are shorter then... well, infinity focus. It's got nothing to do with equivalent like some other dude said; 17-50mm focal lenght for 35mm like all lens. Try shooting a distant object on a tripod.
@newpix7555

Hello Cristian, i have a remark about what you said when you were comparing the Sigma lens with the Nikon 50mm 1.8. The Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens is designed for a Full frame sensor and since you are using a camera with a cropped sensor, all of the lenses you will use that are designed for Full frame cameras will be magnified by a coefficient that depends on your camera. For the Nikon D5300 the crop factor is 1.53, this means that the Nikon 50mm will actually have a 1.53 x 50mm focal length, which is equal to 76.5mm. The Sigma lens your reviewed has the code DC on the box, which means it was designed for a cropped sensor (DG for full frame), thus 50mm is actually ~50mm. Best regards and good luck with your channel!
@newpix7555
@newpix7555 6 лет назад
Hi Andrei! I thought that these kind of lenses (like also the nikon 35mm 1.8 DX) were only adjusted to have the glass still focusing all the light on the sensor (like different curvature) and not lose light. I thought the crop factor would still apply. But hey always good to know!
@h4ywir3z
@h4ywir3z 6 лет назад
Hello Raj, I think you didn't pay much attention to the video, at 11:27 Cristian is comparing the Sigma 17-50 lens (APS-C designed) with the Nikon 50mm F1.8 (an APS lens), which are both mounted on the camera and not shown in the frame. The Nikon kit lens 18-55 is used only as a prop at that time. That's why the bottom frame is magnified, no one is cheating. And if you want to talk proper terminology, the key words are "35mm equivalent" .
@royalarmy1837
@royalarmy1837 5 лет назад
Long story short. Nikon 50mm 1.8 is 50mmx1.5 (crop factor) =75mm on a Nikom DX camera. Sigma 17-50mm at 50mm is 50mmx1.5 (crop factor) = 75mm on a Nikon DX camera.

Hard to tell if this is a good review or not because the obnoxious sound track is effectively blocking your voice much of the time. Loose the music or MIX IT WAY DOWN while you're talking. Another thing that caught my attention was; why f/11? Did you test both lenses for their "sweet spots"? They may not be the same for both lenses and f/11 may fallout of that range. However, having said all that, it looks as though the Sigma would definitely be a step up from the kit lens. So, thanks for making this video.

Something to be warry of. Lens/camera firmware incompatibility. Met with someone selling one of these used. He'd shot it fine on a D7000 for lord knows how long. Well i shoot a D750 and D3300 with the latest firmware. And the sigma 17-50 2.8 hsm OS whatever, this lens, would not AF with my cameras. I expect if ur buying new, thats probably not going to be a problem, as sigma wouldve fixed that out the factory. But this lens has been around a while, and you might be tempted to pick it up used for cheap. But check with the seller, what they shoot, and try before you buy. Cause this thing didnt ship with sigma's newer lens docks, and sigma doesnt say you can update firmware yourself with their docks like with the 18-35 f/1.8. And any nikon compatible with their AF-P line of lenses, may not play nice with this lens, without sending it to sigma for a firmware update. And if i knew it'd be free and/or quick to fix, i'd still have picked it up, but i need a lens this weekend, and hence i'll be getting a cheaper tamron 17-50 2.8 non~os. And if i see another good deal on a compatible sigma, i'll try and flip the tammy. But. Super bummed

it is a great lens. For travel/landscape/street it is perfect. I thought the it would overlap with the 50 1.8, but it is not absolutely the case. The 50 1.8 is still a little bit longer and bokeh is better and for portraits there is nothing better.
@artemast6976
@artemast6976 6 лет назад
You can get a 35mm 1.8g instead of 50mm 1.8g if you have an APS-C Camera. That's what I did and don't know why I haven't done it sooner. You still get the F1.8 and it's a lot more usable. The 35mm on an APS-C is equivalent as a 50mm is on a full frame camera. The lenses I currently have are, the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8, 35mm 1.8g and the 70-300mm nikkor zoom lens.
@royalarmy1837
@royalarmy1837 5 лет назад
You can't go wrong with 35 1.8 and 50 1.8. Bokeh is a lot better on Nikon at 50 1.8/2.8 compared to Sigma at 50mm 2.8. Also, Nikon at 50mm 2.8 is a bit brighter than Sigma at 50mm 2.8.

You can not compare a 2.8 to 5.6 aperture
@MegaRay68
@MegaRay68 6 лет назад
Another thing is that Kit lenses return only 9megapixels compared to the primes which return more than 24 megapixels. Hence the sharpness.

True! Resolution power of lenses is a very big topic especially when considering cameras with high megapixel count. I remember some issues when the D850 or the Sony A7RIII came out. Too many pixels for cheap lenses.

The majority of people who bought it use it for landscape, too, have you heard about the hyperfocal distance and know how to use it? Can you make a focus and then crop for a zone of maximum sharpness ... Finally are you photographer or youtuber?
@newpix7555
@newpix7555 6 лет назад
Hi Negzak.Not sure to understand your critique. By the way, in my humble opinion if you are all about landscape, this is not the lens to go. As you said, you do not need F2.8 for landscapes, so to me it does not make sense at all to invest in this fast zoom.. Landscapes shooters are always ranging from F8 up to F16 and at that apertures, even the crappy kit lens is not bad if you are not willing to print billboard sizes of your pictures. There are other lenses that you could buy if you wanna go for landscapes. Back to your question I am an enthusiast photographer who happens to share his experiences here on RU-vid :) Cheers!

Newpix I'm confused, the maximum aperture of the lens is 2.8. doesn't mean it can't go down to an f stop suitable for landscape photography
@newpix7555
@newpix7555 6 лет назад
Hi Zinny! The nomenclature is quite confusing you are right. Usually the SMALLER the number the BIGGER the aperture. So saying an aperture of MAXIMUM F2.8 refers to how much the iris of the lens is open; or you can refer to the F stop number and say that the aperture is MINIMUM 2.8. Long story short, the lens ranges from F2.8 to F22. It is very suitable for landscapes as well.

Thanks for your feedback! Could you please check some of the new videos and tell me if the background improved? I lowered it down and equalized it differently. Still experimenting and looking for feedback! Thanks for your time :)

Take it from someone with 35 years of shooting. Don't buy Sigma lenses. I have owned 5. 2 are now paperweights because they were not forward Canon compatible, one I sold because the optics were severely decentered and had a soft right side. One stopped focusing, and the last one is sitting in storage. By Nikon or Canon or Tamron, don't make my mistakes.
