I would definitely class a used tl lens like the 18mm tl in a class above this sigma and they are basically the same price on the used market. I will still be getting this 17mm lens for my fp though - it’s a very well made versatile and “neat” lens that is great for full frame.

I own one of this lens which came with the Lumix S5 when I bought it secondhand. Originally I intended to sell it to get a 35mm 1.4 DG DN instead for videography, then all of a sudden I started using it and man. I changed my mind on selling it. Even though it is not the fastest lens out there, the minimum focus distence is very tempting when it comes to versatile lens. I am very happy with it.

thank you very much for the illustrative review .. Whereas I doubt to have any issues with the parallelly released nifty-fifty, here my impressions and minus points about the 17 mm (translated on the go .. by< google, pardon for any imprecise wordings therefore...): A short focal length, packed relatively compactly, is a good idea. Although the image quality is very good, except for the strong distortion in RAW (which costs image quality when corrected!), I have two points of criticism - the lens is actually much "too small" - measured against the 20 mm 2.0, its size would have been okay and would have fitted in very well with the series, at least with a speed of 2.8 - Measured by the mechanical aspects and the low "speed", I find the price too high, actually it should be at least 100 € cheaper I don't understand why Sigma (like many or actually all photo manufacturers unfortunately) doesn't ask the users beforehand about their wishes. In any case, I would have said that I find so much compactness for so little speed problematic. A bit bigger, but F 3.5 or 2.8 would have been great! I now use it as a second lens next to, for example, the Canon TS - E 17 mm shift lens - at least the focal length and perspective match So, dear company Sigma: set up a customer advisory board, then everything will be better

The Samyang 18mm F2.8 is a awesome lens for it's cost, better image quality PER DOLLAR than any other wide angle lens (at F5.6); however it has poor quality control, build quality, features, and minimum focusing distance. Pretty much every Samyang lens they make has the potential to be the best image quality PER DOLLAR, but you have to buy them brand new with warranty and be willing to test and send back your first couple of lenses due to decentering issues. If they had half a brain they wouldn't, they would get the Samyang AF 18mm f2.8 FE instead, as it's also half the price of the Sigma, sharper than the Sigma when stopped down to f4, but compared to the Canon, it's also but far better optically, especially at the edges of frame, it has far less CA, far less distortion, it has much quieter AF, it's lighter than the Canon, it has less focus breathing, and it has IF verses the "dust pump" extension during focussing of the Canon.

@@alfoutdoors9660 you seem to know your stuff. Although IF seems to avoid the visible 'suck' might it not suck internally? I'm thinking of something like a syringe where the rubber passes thro the barrel, displaced the air but (let's forgt the handle) and ends up pumping in dirty air anyways. Just as a simple visualisation.

As usual, you have a short memory Chris (perhaps not surprising when you have tested so many lenses)...This new Sigma 17mm f4 is actually a totally pointless lens, and Sigma have completely wasted their time and money on creating it because your also highly recommended Samyang AF 18mm f2.8 FE is just as sharp and contrasty as the Sigma when stopped down to f4, it has less distortion, it's a noticeable 75g lighter, and it's almost half the price! The only pros Sigma has are slightly better flare resistance and it can focus to half the distance the Samyang can, but the Sigma does need to be stopped down f5.6 to get the same close up image quality the Samyang has at f4, so it's not really much of an advantage.

@@AIP404 I know, but like Chris I have a Sony full frame mirrorless camera, and it fit's that perfectly.

So have I, and I would still avoid this lens like the plague.
