I get the Sony ZVE1 with this Sigma 17. Perfection. Light and balanced. Full frame in an APSC package.

Same here with sigma fp. You can basically leave it on manual focus which is a plus as a non sony user 😅

Great review! I can see why this lens exists. I think i'll be opting for the Panasonic 14-28mm f4-5.6 though as not much more in price but more flexability. Tough choice though 🤓👍

If it was a 2.8, it would already be in my cart! Haha. I have a Canon R5 and R5 c and really appreciate the Canon 16mm 2.8. It’s super light weight and quiet and is a perfect focal length for vlogging.

thank you very much for the illustrative review of both small format primes! Whereas I don't have any issues with the nifty-fifty, here my impressions and minus points about the 17 mm (translated by< google, pardon for any imprecise wordings therefore...): A short focal length, packed relatively compactly, is a good idea. Although the image quality is very good, except for the strong distortion in RAW (which costs image quality when corrected!), I have two points of criticism - the lens is actually much "too small" - measured against the 20 mm 2.0, its size would have been okay and would have fitted in very well with the series, at least with a speed of 2.8 IMPORTANT: that's why the classic B+W S-Pro filters (clear / UV) don't fit - the tube on which the lens hood is attached using a bayonet lock is narrower than the broader filter. Consequence: the filter protrudes slightly over the edge, the attachable bayonet hood no longer fits in! So I had to buy a new B+W Master Clear Filter for 40 E, which makes the following point even more important: - Measured by the mechanical aspects and the low "speed", I find the price too high, actually it should be at least 100 € cheaper I don't understand why Sigma (like many or actually all photo manufacturers unfortunately) doesn't ask the users beforehand about their wishes. In any case, I would have said that I find so much compactness for so little speed problematic. A bit bigger, but F 3.5 or 2.8 would have been great! I now use it as a second lens next to, for example, the Canon TS - E 17 mm shift lens - at least the focal length and perspective match So, dear company Sigma: set up a customer advisory board, then everything will be better

Great job on the video Mark! Thanks for making it. Nice shout-out for Camera Conspiracies. Love that channel too! Once I get my fx30 (no later than july!) I will be pushing my a6400 into a primarily photo-centric role so this might be a lens I consider. My Sony 15mm F1.4 will be living on the new camera anyway, so I will need a second ultra-wide to go in my kit for when I'm just out taking photos for fun. Since that typically means being outdoors, I don't really need a crazy fast aperture for my use-case. Looks like it's even lighter than the Sony 15mm as well. Full-Frame too. Hmmmmm...

My dream lens would be this with F2.8. The little Sony 24 F2.8 is so great, but want it wider. So far, Sigma 16-28 F2.8 is doing ok, but I’m on a mission for the lightest lenses for ZVE1.

Very interesting lens and review. Thank you ! I'm thinking of buying this lens for street photography on my APS-C A6400. The F4 is not a major problem for what I plan to shoot, and I really love the tiny size and the overall quality of the I series lenses. I already have the 20/2 and the 90/2.8 which are great, so this new 17/4 will probably be just as good.

Hi Mark! I know this video is over a year old, but any chance you remember what frame rate this was filmed at? Do you still film at this same frame rate today? I have a 16-25mm and it looks like this 17mm is wider than my 16mm, so maybe it's the magnification for 4k30 on my A7C.

Hi Mark, If you are vlogging (with a ZVE1), and you want to use dynamic stabilization as you walk, do you reckon the 17mm will make a big difference compared to the Sony 20mm (which I already have)? Is it worth it? Thanks.

yes - the Sony lenses work better with dynamic stabilization. But if you manually tell the camera what focal length the 3rd party is - it will help a lot
@KPGuitarStudios
@KPGuitarStudios Год назад
For the simple fact that I'm not going FF, there's no point in getting that lens :) For other systems though, that adds a lot of versatility. If I'm being strategic I think that's the perfect way for Sigma to get a lens onto the Canon RF ecosystem since it's a different focal length at 17mm than Canon would make. Provided it's available for Nikon, L Mount and RF then it's a killer Vlogging lens for those who can make it work either with the Catalyst Browse or proper IBIS like Panny Boy. Good job Sigma!

@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Год назад
the Sony 20 1.8 is a better overall lens. that 1.8 is great. focus breathing compensation. it will be a little tighter for handheld vlogging on dynamic stabilization, but you can extend your arm just a little further. plus, you don’t always have to use dynamic stabilization. I find active is fine, Keep the 20

I think you are better off with something with a wider aperture. Although it being small it’s good. I think the slightly wider Samyang is the best go to small travel and street video prime. I’d like to see you test the Samyang, especially when you get the E1, because that’s the set up I may move to (waiting for proper reviews on E1 by real users as I’m concerned about overheating). The wider Samyang will be more ideal as well for the dynamic stabilisation on the E1.

This looks more like a portrait lens than one for filmmaking. Unless you're going to use it for shooting daytime scenes. Definitely not a low light beast. More like a gerbil. I guess for minimum focus situations, it would be good. Buuut, at F4 I'm not really drawn to it. Still a very handsome review.

@BorealisOffroad Год назад
Great video! The lens, I'm having a hard time figuring out why I would want this. Seems like a solution looking for a problem. It appears to have some nice qualities, but I don't get the purpose of relatively slow primes. If I was looking in the $600 USD range, I know used copies of the Zeiss Batis 18mm f2.8 can be had for low 600s. Then I have something for low light, indoors, astro, basically anything ultra wide. If I'm "running and gunning" as the kids say, I don't want to worry about having enough lighting. For just a little more is Sony's own 20mm f1.8 with aperture ring and function button. On the other side of $600, image quality won't be as great but Samyang and Tamron have 18mm and 20mm, respectively, f2.8 lenses for about half the cost. On the wide end of things, the 3mm difference between 17 and 20mm is pretty big but then I'd be back at the Batis. Another lens I think looks great alone but better with the lens hood on. I would just rather shoot a 2.8 at f4 than wide open on an f4 lens. Ending with a question here, can you explain a technical and/or creative reason to have a slow prime? Thanks for the content!

Size and weight. With the great iso performance of the new cameras, F4 is enough for some people.
@BorealisOffroad
@BorealisOffroad Год назад
@@NightTrainRides I agree the lens is a nice size and weight. Aside from the amount of light allowed, that f4 is going to have a larger dof. If one is going to be shooting at a smaller aperture to have more in focus, then it does make sense. For myself, I'd rather spend about the same for a lens with a larger aperture to use it when necessary to get more purpose from the one lens.
