What is the best lens for the Panasonic GH5? In this video, I compare the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 Canon EF mount vs the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 native lens. Each lens has its pros and cons, but these are the most widely recommended one lens for the GH5 body.

Hello Andy, thanks for this video. I'm a bit late, from my experience 4 years ago shooting with the lumix 12-35II on a G85 and Sigma 18-35 on a GH4 I was shocked how the image was sharp on the Sigma, even with the metabones. I sold the lumix 12-35 later. Greetings!

Hello, I have GH4 I watched you review it's really really helping. But still I'm confused. Should I get the 12-35mm Panasonic f2.8 (750€) ? or The build Metabones + Sigma (1500€) ? I though about another combo : 12-35mm Panasonic + Adaptater Canon + 50mm Canon (it will cost around 1100€) I don't know... Else what lens is better for background blur (like the 50mm for the canon) Panasonic or Sigma+Metabones?.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
Depends on your needs. What do you shoot? I would get the 42.5 1.7 for background blur before I use a dumb adapter with Canon glass. I want the AF for the background blur shots. Sigma 18-35 with speed booster has way better background blur than Panasonic 12-35. Sigma 18-35 with speed booster is 1.2 aperture, equivalent to background blur of 2.4 aperture on full frame. So that’s closer to f1.8 of the standard canon 50mm on full frame. Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 is equivalent to 5.6 aperture on full frame.

If you’re filming yourself, I would go for the 12-35. You’ll need native glass for the autofocus. The sigma 18-35 would have to be manual focused which would be a hassle if you’re a one person crew. As far as I understand, blurring the background is unnecessary for green screen. People do green screen even with webcams. I would spend the money in a 42.5 1.7 by Panasonic for b-roll of products if that’s something you need. But for most of your shots, Panasonic 12-35.

Don't buy the Metabones, buy the Viltrox EF-M2. It has the same sharpness, it has the same vignetting, it's basically the same thing, except for the price. As a matter of fact, Metabones speedboosters have a lot more play when mounted to the camera, the Viltrox has way less. You can buy it for 120 dollars on ebay = 105 Euros

Thank you so much for viewing! I hope you decided on the Panasonic 12-35! You can't give up that compression from 70mm f2.8. I've used the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 at the equivalent 50mm end and it's too thin of a DOF at 1.2 so I end up missing my shot.. and at 50mm you don't get that "close up" shot of food, it's still pretty normal to wide of a field of view.

Hi Andy. Whats the best way to set focus on the sigma 18-35 while its on a gimbal with the GH5? Normally in a wedding shoot, I set my GH5 to manual-focus mode and I use the tap-focus on the display screen to set my focus quickly. That way the gimbal remains steady as opposed to turning the barrel of the lens to achieve the same effect. Plus its lightning fast. With the sigma lens attached, the GH5 refuses to do tap-screen manual focus. Any suggestions?

Thanks for doing this. I think your evaluation is very pragmatic and honest. I use the Panasonic 12-35 and the Olympus 12-40. Why? I shoot a lot of live theatre, concerts and dance competitions. On my wide shot I use the Olympus because it has a manual focus clutch. I can set the focus and leave it. Even if I turn on and off the camera or change the battery, the focus will not change. I use the Panasonic 12-35 for many of the same reasons you outlined, and occasionally instead of the 35-100 on my close up camera, I need to go to something wider.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing! That's a very good use of the manual focus clutch, never thought of that. The 35-100 is a great lens, but I don't find that I use it enough to purchase it myself. no it's an APSC lens, FF 29.1-56.5 F2.9 which is (0.71) FF 20.6-40.1 F2.1, and the image circle is cropped smaller (0.71) than diagonal MFT/APSC should be (0.76) so the image circle can have vignetting if you aren't cropping 16:9 out of the 4:3 sensor, but it's pretty much PERFECT for 16:9 out of the 4:3 or if you zoom.. kinda like supersampling and getting rid of lens imperfections w/ anti-aliasing

The Viltrox adapter is a metabones killer IMO. I own two Viltrox's and my videography experience is better thanks to the adapter. viltrox works great with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (f2.0 with adapter) and Tokina 11-16 f2.8 (f2.0 with adapter). @AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
Quality is very similar, but Sigma will edge out. It’s like having multiple prime lenses in one. Where the Panasonic will edge out is speed and workflow. You’ll be able to work faster and more efficiently by utilizing the lens IS, smaller size, and autofocus. If you don’t care about that and what the best image quality, get the Sigma.

I'd recommend Sigma with a speedbooster. 12-35 F2.8 won't produce the sexy DOF like Sigma does, on top of that Sigma with a speedbooster has an aperture of 1.2 which is really helpful in a low light situation.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
I agree it has a great look. But it’s very cumbersome to use on a regular basis. It all depends on your subject! I don’t always need low light or bokeh so the Panasonic usually does the job for me. It’s just so small and quick to use..

Love this video, man. Thank you. I recently picked up a GH5 (right before a pandemic, perfect time right?) and up to this point I've only ever had Nikon bodies and lenses, so I'm using the Viltrox adapter for those lenses. I don't care about the lack of autofocus since I shoot a lot of concerts, music videos, and events, and I just want to perfect my manual focusing anyway. I have the same issue you do with the adapter having some wiggle with the body (it's rock solid on the lens though), but I have a Niceyrig cage, not the SmallRig one (it was cheaper and basically the same thing as far as I can tell), so time will tell if that support is compatible with my setup, but it's cheap and I can return it so who cares. I do plan on getting the 12-35mm in the future though since I use a gimbal sometimes and I would like to be able to have SOME degree of autofocus with it.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 4 года назад
I've been using my cameras so much more since the pandemic, because of RU-vid :). Nice! So does that cage have an mount to support the viltrox adapter? The 12-35 autofocus is pretty usable on static subjects. Just use it within its limitations and you'll get great results!
@Dj0sten
@Dj0sten 4 года назад
@@AndyVNguyen I've been bandying about starting to make some semi-consistent RU-vid videos, but it's mostly the quandary of getting over being nervous in front of the camera. Not something I'm used to, haha. It has the same two holes that every other cage I've looked at has, so I -think- it will work. It's virtually identical to the SmallRig one, but without having both side by side in front of me it's hard to tell. That's good to know. I shoot a lot of events and concerts so hopefully it would be able to register at least some low light.

@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
I use it with the Zhiyun Crane 2 which is the same class of gimbal. Works great. There’s a few RU-vidrs that have used the Ronin as well. I use the 12-35 in good light and Sigma 18-35 in lower light. I make sure to supplement with a tele zoom like the Panasonic 35-100 on a tripod or monopod. You want a wide and a tele to cover all of your angles.

@@AndyVNguyen Thanks! And I see you went with native glass on your tele. Any reason for that? Also, I noticed you listed the Metabones Ultra in the descrption, but it's actually linked to the Metabones XL .64x. Did you meant do that? The reason is because I've heard there's vingetting on the .64x.

@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
I have one GH5 so I'd rather keep my Sigma 18-35 with the speedbooster. For the second one that I'd rent, I would rather not want to deal with renting a speedbooster as well. Since the tele is just a long static shot, I'd go for a native lens. Also, if I have an assistant, I'd want to give them a native lens so they can use AF in a pinch. I'd run manual focus on the Sigma. I meant to link the Ultra. There is vignetting on the 0.64x using the Sigma. Here's the link for ultra: amzn.to/2XO2VxH

So now I'm hesitant between the Pana 12-35 and the Oly 12-40 f2.8. Do you have any experience with the Oly? It has a nice manual focus option that is not by wire. Their price is really similar. I really don't know which to choose 🤔
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
I love the Panasonic 12-35 with the GH5 for the dual IS. It is unmatched. Unfortunately, the mkI has a poor manual focus ring. The mkII is a little better but is still by wire. You have to make the choice if you want the dual IS or the better focus ring. I would go for the dual IS so that I can skip using a gimbal. Focus pulls end up being a little harder sometimes, but for the work that I do (more run and gun) I don't need the Oly's focus ring.

@@AndyVNguyen Thank you for the reply :) At the moment I'm using an Oly 17mm f1.8 and I really like it. It has no IS and the IBIS does a quite decent job. However, somehow I don't get much focus peaking and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with DFD, which is a Pana lens only feature (also, it could be used for autofocus too). Use canon. EF mount is most versatile. Regarding which lens.. what do you primarily shoot? Sigma 18-35 handheld works a treat if you’re not walking and following. Think simple pans and tilts. Panasonic 12-35 can handle walking and following to an extent. If you don’t have a gimbal, I’d recommend the 12-35 if you don’t shoot a lot of dark dark scenarios

Considering as Sigma 18-35 is working most of the time using manual focus and every time with an adapter is still a expensive lens. Hi! That's unfortunate. Does it really improve in lowlight? I great vid! I have a 25mm 1.7 cheap panasonic lens. What is the difference on low light between 25mm pana 1.7 lens vs sigma twist to 25mm 1.7f in lightng?
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
The Sigma will give you f1.2 vs the f1.7 of the Panasonic. This is about 1 stop of light. 1 stop of light is iso 400 vs iso 200, for example. I hope my math is correct. It all depends on your use. The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 can give you about ~25mm equivalent focal length on the wide end, but is SUPER heavy. The 25mm f1.7 gives you 50mm equivalent focal length, so it's much tighter. If you need the wide shots and don't mind the weight and heft, go for the Sigma. If the portability of the m43 system is important for you, then you'll have to work with the tighter framing of the 25mm f1.7. But it will be MUCH lighter.

Wow...great channel. Excellent content quality. Question: What would you recommend for run-and-gun weddings? I have two g85's but on manual focus I've lost a few important shots due to the high pressure situations despite about 6 months of consistent practice on manual. It's tough to rack focus consistently when run-and-gunning all day. The sony a7iii has excellent autofocus but that's about all I like about it. I'm so confused.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 4 года назад
Ramy, I shot my first few weddings with manual focus. I would recommend shooting at F4 if you're missing focus a lot, and move down to F2.8 once you get a little better. When using manual focus, I try not to use the prime lenses for the run and gun sections. So if I'm running around I'll do 12-35 f2.8 on f4. If I have some control, I'll use the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. After time you'll get used to the distance. And if you miss part of a shot, perhaps you can slow it down in post to stretch out the moments that ARE in focus. I use the Sony A7III for autofocus, but if there's a lot of things going on in a shot or if I'm doing b-roll, sometimes it doesn't autofocus on what I want.

Ah I see what you mean. Only slight movement, when twisting it. Not enough to concern me. I’m mostly concerned with up and down movement due to the weight of the sigma. Anybody who can enlighten me ? Putting the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 on the GH5 makes it then a 24-70mm???
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
12-35 on GH5 has a 2x crop factor, so it is a 24-70. The 12-35 is normal zoom lens. Don’t worry, it is very confusing in the beginning! If you want a wide angle lens, you’ll want the Leica 8-18 or Panasonic 7-14. If you have a speedbooster you can get the tokina 11-16 for EF mount as well. Speedboosters apply 0.71x crop, and then you apply 2x crop for the sensor. So the tokina 11-16 becomes 11 x 0.71 x 2 = 15.6mm at the wide end, which is wider than 24mm
@leamorelli1075
@leamorelli1075 5 лет назад
@@AndyVNguyen That seem all so much more clear now thank you so much ! And yes I have a metabones speedbooster. Does that mean then that my TAMRON 24-70mm with the speedbooster is actually a a 35 - 100mm (24 x 0,71 x 2 & 70 x 0,71 x 2 ) ? I actually thought of the Leica 8-18 first, but i'm mostly doing documentaries and a lot of time hand held. I'm kind of scared not too cover a big enough range of focal. Even though, i think with a wide angle i'll use more often a tripod for those shots, I still wonder if it's as flexible as a 12-35.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
@@leamorelli1075 Yes, just about. That's gonna be a little bit more tight than a regular standard zoom (24-70). For documentaries, I highly recommend the 12-35 f2.8. Grab a small LED panel to support it like the Viltrox (amzn.to/31c3pQU). The stabilization with the GH5 is AMAZING and you can use tripod lock to really get a stable frame if you don't move around. This way you can stay nimble and not get tied down with a gimbal. Can perhaps even skip the monopod/tripod in a lot of situations. The 8-18 is definitely not as flexible. I only ever considered buying it for vlogging, where the ultrawide is preferred. There are wide primes that you can throw on as well. The Laowa 7.5mm f2 comes to mind (amzn.to/2UPSgTv) This lens is equivalent 15mm, so it's a really good wide option. It's also small. So just throw it on your camera for a wide shot and then switch back to the 12-35 f2.8. Hope that helps!

I change the focal length and the subject is constantly in focus. What do you think is the cause of the effect with Sigma AF 18-35mm.

I would always suggest having at least one native lens. Also a zoom lens for run and gun. So yes, I suggest getting the 12-35

@@AndyVNguyen I do have a few native lenses like my Lumix 14-140 but its a f3-5.6.

If you’re shooting video, you don’t want variable aperture like your 14-140. Also, the 12-35 has a better aperture that’s more suited to lower light. The 14-140 is best as a travel lens or single lens solution in good light only.

I don't think f stops and bokeh works that way, 2.8 is still 2.8, since ur not using it on full frame(then It would be 5.6) but m43
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
Yep, you're right. 2.8 is still 2.8. The frame is just tighter so you have to back up to get similar framing, which is what lessens the blurred background. It's just easier shorthand to say 2.8 bokeh on M43 is equivalent to 5.6 bokeh on FF. Regarding exposure, 2.8 is always 2.8, no matter what sensor.

What handle strap is that?
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
Peak design clutch! Works best with full size DSLRs. Kind of big for use with a mirrorless, UNLESS you put the mirrorless in a cage and or use it with a battery grip. It's a weird size to use with a bare A7III, for example. The GH5 is big enough for it to be manageable, since it's basically DSLR sized lol.
@HamiltonWard
@HamiltonWard 5 лет назад
@@AndyVNguyen I just purchased your set up and it's been working great! thank you for the content. What stabilizer settings are you using for the GH5? I'm still getting some wobble but not nearly as bad as before.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
@@HamiltonWard I turn on IBIS in GH5, and the gimbal settings vary. The gimbal settings are always set to max strength. The wobble is just gonna be due to shooting at a longer focal length (more susceptible to wobble) and just your gimbal walking skills. You gotta master the "ninja walk." If your zhiyun crane 2 is wobbling, check to make sure your firmware settings are up to date. my zhiyun crane 2 was wobbling pretty bad before i did a firmware update.
@VisualDanny

hey, what gimbal would you recommend for 18-35+lumix G7? people reffered me the crain plus, honestly i don't think it's enough, last time I used Crane 2 my camera got unblanced alot during shooting.. what's your thoughts? Thanks.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
I think your g7 is gonna be too light to balance on a gimbal. You would need to add a cage and perhaps a manfrotto rc2 plate system beneath it to balance. Even just the g7 and Panasonic 12-35 I had to add weight to the g7 to balance on a zhiyun crane v2. Another benefit of the rc2 is that you’d be able to quick release your camera without messing with your balance gimbal.
@VisualDanny
@VisualDanny 5 лет назад
@@AndyVNguyen well ive been using crane 2 with sigma 18-35 and g7, and got it unbalanced alot.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 5 лет назад
That's what I'm talking about. The G7 is too light to be balanced with the Sigma 18-35. You would need to add weight on the G7 side. So Manfrotto RC2 plate, a Smallrig cage, something like that. You can only move the G7 back on the plate so far before you just hit the motor.
