I take a look at Sigma's 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens on my Sony a6500. It is made for crop sensor cameras like the a5000 and a6000 series cameras. To this date it is the fastest lens with an aperture of F1.4 with autofocus for Sony E-mount users which makes it great for low light conditions and to achieve smooth out of focus blur. It can be used for a wide variety of applications from landscape, portrait, scenic shots, food photography and more.

Nice work John, Thanks ;) I was considering reviewing this lens with the A6500 since it has the IBIS and all. Looks like a very high quality unit for the money!! I also loved the out takes knowing how hard it is to talk in front of the camera like that...

Nice review. I got one. This lens is amazingly sharp, especially at wide open. I can feel the dimension of every image i captured. I use it all the time for photo and video. Cons are.. a little purple fringing and hard to do manual focus. But I still love it!

I'm a newb to photography but originally bought the A6000 with the Sony Zeiss 16-70 back in October. By December I had gotten the Sigma 30mm F1.4 as a Christmas gift and definitely have been using this as my go-to lens. I do notice that there is a quite a bit of chromatic aberration but nothing that is not fixable in post.

Nice video, bot i would be nice to see pictures example from it. On another video it would be useful to know, on Sony E mount, with lens is the best to use in manual mode, very few are talking about that on RU-vid, Manual focus is a must to do some picture (trough a fence, doing video with gradual focus etc...)
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
Example photos are at 2:54 mark and I have more on my facebook page. I'll see what I can do regarding the best lens for manual focus but I think a quick answer would be the Loxia lens lineup from Zeiss so far.

I bought this lens to replace my very good Sigma 30mm f 2.8 - to be able to take better images in low light conditions. And I'm very pleased with this lens. Aperture 1.4 is not the best / sharpest outcome, but latest with f1.7 I'm blown away - hand held, low light, f 1.7 and a sharp result with an nice bokeh. f2.0 is sometimes not in focus, but - as I know this problem - I don't use f 2.0; my favorites are f 1.7, f2.8, f 4.0 and f7.1 - and the results are fantastic. I use the Sony 6500 - so I have image stabilisation inside of the camera. Even with an shutter speed below 1/10 sec. I was able to take sharp images. Just the retention force of the lens hood to the lens could be better - too easy to remove the hood.
@PedroKin
@PedroKin 7 лет назад
Thinking about this one vs the 35mm Sony, and I assume the IBIS works great on this lens right? You mentioned not having stabilization but the A6500 compensates for that well i suppose.
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
Yep! The A6500's in stabilisation works well with the 30mm. So if you have that camera, I'd go with the Sigma.
@GetOutsideYourself
@GetOutsideYourself 7 лет назад
I thought about getting this lens for my a6500, but went with the Sigma Art 30mm f/2.8. Yeah, I'm sacrificing two stops, but the lens is tiny and great for keeping the kit small, plus that very inexpensive lens is quite impressive optically. I'd like to see more from Sigma for E and FE mount.
@johanhoahm
@johanhoahm 7 лет назад
Jonathan Stewart i once buy the 2.8 version, but change it to 1.4 since two stops faster is very good for low light
@GetOutsideYourself
@GetOutsideYourself 7 лет назад
Sure, if I were going to use it primarily in low light that would change the equation. But my #1 factor was size and weight, followed by sharpness, since I got that lens for hiking and outdoor use during the daytime. The lens was only $169 new, so hard to go wrong.
@teobot2
@teobot2 7 лет назад
Plus the 2.8 version is sharper at infinity, while the 1.4 is best for close to medium distances
@TheGreatGandalf09

The hole series of sigma 19, 30 and 60 is the best value for money you get for the e mount. Paired with the 18/105 it is an amazing set for value.
@stefpix
@stefpix 7 лет назад
I have both. 1.4 is a huge difference. 2.8 may be better for the beach and hiking in daylight, but for urban shots, portraiture, etc the 1.4 is great. I kept the 2.8 for travel or as backup.

Hey John - lovin' your work man and what a backdrop to use. I definitely wouldn't want to be there in the dark! - Subscribed to you today. I have a Sony a6400 & Sigma 16mm 1.4 usually pointing at myself doing "Talking head" stuff from a desk. However, when Covid permits, I want to be on the other side of the lens and the Sigma 30mm 1.4 is on my shortlist. Since the a6400 has no image stabilisation, I am currently researching either a monopod or tripod that can be spring loaded - if there is such a thing??? - any suggestions? - Peter.

I have this and love it. However I found the focal length is good for outdoor more than indoor. The 1.4 is excellent for indoor but at 30mm a 45mm equivalent is not wide enough in indoor with limited space to photo a group of people. I'm waiting for someone to come out with a 23/24mm f2 small size lens.
@charruaporelmundo

Since you're using the a6500, pairing it with the Sigma 30mm still works fairly well for video since the camera has built in stabilization right? Looking to pick up this combo as our main shooter!

2 things: the hoods does not feel very secure, easy to knock it off(maybe needs to be secured with gaffer tape). Lightroom does not apply the lens correction profile automatically nor when I click the "lens correction" checkbox. Only when I select Sigma brand, Lightroom applies the specific preset.

Using the a6500, do you get all 5 axis points with the stabilization. Also, one reviewer on B&H Photo said it was difficult to attach the lens, and that the lens was very loud when focusing. Can you confirm if this is true? Lastly, do all of the focus options on the a6500 work on the camera like eye or face recognition?
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
I'm not too sure about the stabilisation but I'll double check and get you an answer ASAP but you definitely have eye AF and face recognition. With AF noise, you can hear it faintly if you're in a quiet room but its not very loud. Possibly he has a faulty one? =.S

Hi John, great video. I am considering this lens vs the sony 35mm f1.8 and you mentioned that the sigma hunts quite a bit. I own an a6500 and always use the touch to focus system, will the sigma still hunt if I already tell it where to focus? Also, will you really notice the sharpness of the Sigma over the Sony even if you do not pixel peep? Thanks!
@EricBartolo
@EricBartolo 7 лет назад
How good is this lens for handheld travel video since it does not come with any OSS?
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
Not the best. Its going to be a bit shaky but to be honest, even with a lens that has OSS its still going to be shaky so I would recommend getting a gimbal for smoother shots.
@AgnostosGnostos
@AgnostosGnostos 7 лет назад
The only disadvantage is the slow focusing. But even the Sony 50mm f/1.8 (Not the FE) isn't a fast focusing lens. The chromatic aberration is obvious under extreme situations and can be post corrected. The f/1.4 is amazing and unique for APS-C e-mount lenses. Sony full frame e-mount lenses have f/1.4 lenses but are multiple times bigger, heavier and more expensive. A very big aperture is always welcomed in photography as long it gives sharp results with good Bokeh and the sigma lens gives both of them at a very low price. Actually if that lens had the Zeiss badge with the same sharpness, aperture and Bokeh, I would cost at least three times more.

Hey man I am purchasing the sony a6500 this week and would like your opinion on lenses. I have about $1500-$2000 to spend on lenses. I don't know whether to get 2 nice lenses or one nice and two lesser quality. I will be doing about half video half photos. Video wise very similar to that of christian mate grab who uses the sigma 30mm. However, why not get the sony 35mm which has better autofocus for video? Portrait wise what would you recommend? I will also be doing architecture so I plan to get the 10-18mm. Other than that lens I'm not sure.
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
Hmm that's a tough one. I would definitely get the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the 10-18mm for your architectural shots. I was also thinking of the 18-105mm F4 G lens for video and to fill your range too. What do you think about that lineup?
@michaelkincaid855
@michaelkincaid855 7 лет назад
I think the 10-18 is for sure. Only concern with the sigma is its autofocusing compared to the native sony 35mm. The f1.4 on the sigma is great and the build is excellent but I'm slightly concerned about autofocus. I like the zoom but that would require me to use the sigma 30mm as my primary portrait lens to have a nice blurred background.

Hey, John Bro.How's life going. Great review as always. where is this location.? it's a kind of lonely and scary place. ??? What exactly are the difference b/w art and contemporary models except the metal alloy construction. any image quality difference.????????.
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 7 лет назад
Its not bad. How about you? This is in Old Helensburgh station. Apparently the place is haunted lol. The contemporary line is for the everyday photographer who wants good all round performance and the art series has more sophisticated optical performance and quality. That's by going off the Sigma website. So in terms of quality, the Art series are better ones.

Anyone with issues regarding sharpness? According to DxO this is the sharpest APS-C lens ever tested. I got this lens right before I left for a 4 weeks vacation, and I'm disappointed so far. I have this lens with an a6300 camera, it's useless for video unless you have an external microphone for your camera, because the stupid lens is a lot noisy in video mode, and image stabilization is a really big issue as well. So might as well keep that in mind too before buying this lens.

That's interesting, I haven't actually heard any noise when I filmed with this lens. Have you tried other copies?

John Sison I don't know what's that noise, but it bothers me I a lot in video mode, the video that comes out is all noisy. No I haven't tried other copies, I barely could even afford the one I have.

Haha thanks! Appreciate the kind words. Its never easy for myself to film in front of the camera lol. Do you want more a zoom lens on a prime lens?

Maybe a Sigma 19mm F2.8 for even wider shots or a 50mm F1.8 for better low light but closer which could be good for portrait shots?

John Sison I do have the Sony 16mm F2.8, now I believe Sigma might be a little sharper? Have you used it yourself, or even better Review it? Last question, is the 50mm F1.8 better/sharper then the 60mm from Sigma? :/ thank you so much for all the time and work you do. :) Have a good one

I've used the Sigma before and it is a little sharper but if you already have the 16mm F2.8 from Sony, I wouldn't bother getting it. I'd like to review that lens though. I actually haven't used the Sigma 60mm. Things to add to the list for review ;) Let me know if you have any other questions :)
