Your videos are another level and a great voice to along with dropping that knowledge. This lens is the only option for a zoom this fast. I'm gonna use this for photography. Can i ask how it behaves with the R7 IS in so impressed at the stability with the 18-35mm. Is it the same kind of effecf? Thanks in advance
Thanks! From my limited use for still photography with this lens the auto focus works ok. I used that combo for video and it worked decent as well. Not as fast as a native RF lens but pretty good
Nice breakdown! I’m currently using a set of Leica R’s I have been building specifically for my Komodo and occasionally I will use my canon16-35 2.8, 50mm 1.2 and 70-200 that I have for my 1DXM3. Lately I have been considering getting a sigma 18-35 and 50-100 for work that needs something crispy and where I won’t have to swap out lenses on the gimbal as much. I have found the Komodo’s AF to be pretty good with native canon glass and I’m curious if sigmas AF performance is as good.
hey Jordan! So on the 18-35 it has worked pretty well for me, however with the 50-100 I honestly haven't even given it a go due to how shallow I am shooting a lot of the shots and not wanting to deal with hunting as it will be way more apparent on the 50-100 then on the 18-35. Hope this helps!
@@ReachFilms thanks for the fast reply totally makes sense! I can imagine how shallow that DOF is especially closer to the 100mm end of things. Great channel!
Wow, super interesting about the using of the Extender 1.4x and 2x. Do you know if it's still compatible with the newer extenders like the 2x MK III? Is there any softening of the images/ edges when using the extender? I'm thinking of getting one after watching your video 😂
Unfortunately have not used the brand new ones, so don’t know if they work. The old ones do and if the new ones are similar optically then they probably it will. If the optics have changed then maybe not.
The biggest thing is you lose a stop of light with the 1.4x and I think you lose 1.5 stops with the 2x other then that pretty nice images with my old adapters
Hey Ash, thanks for watching! Unfortunately I have not tested it on any crop sensor body as I don’t have one. That may change in the future if canon makes a good mirrorless crop sensor body. But unfortunately I cannot give you advice for that I am sorry :(
I have used it for 4+ years now with my trusty old canon m5, works great on crop, used it on an FF Sony too it works great on both. I use it mostly for portrait work, or filming interviews.
@@Justinian43 know its a bag of money but the 28-70 f2 may be the one for you wider not as long but I am hopeful canon will make a 70-135/150 f2 as well and maybe a 17-28
@@heartshapedfilms yeah that lens sound nice! I have a tokina f2 14-20mm for crop sensor and that thing shines in low light!! I can only imagine how amazing that 28-70mm f2 is
@@viewmoto9857 it all depends on what you are filming / using the lens for that’s a super open ended question as it’s great for some things terrible for some things too
@@ReachFilms nice! Ya I still have mine but was thinking of selling and getting some primes because of the breathing but now I'm not sure 🤔 its tough to squeeze a good focus rack or any kind of moving shot with this lens
@@bradleykussy yea for sure that’s a huge problem with this lens, that’s why the way I use it is perfect for it. However I shoot TONS of talking heads all the time so the 50-100 is a no brainer for that if you don’t need to pull focus and shooting on super 35
@@ReachFilms very true! I'm mostly narrative but the few talking heads or broll I do this lens comes in handy. May still snag a Sigma 50 prime but seems foolhardy 😅
@@bradleykussy I had the 50 because I needed it for full frame and I did really like it, but once I got rid of full frame I sold it because it was not as useful for me
Great iq, but horrible close range. 95cm minimum. What did they think when developing ? Not usable for so many shots because of that. And for filming … the focus berating is really bad
It's a photo lens. What were they thinking? Maybe f1.8? It's a mid telephoto so what exactly were you hoping to shoot at closer focus? Tell me another f1.8 mid telephoto with close focus? You won't find another. It doesn't get legendary status like it's smaller brother the 18 35 f1.8 but it's useable in its own right for that f1.8
@@getfmlr… you are obviously not a professional. The exact same lens exists as a cone lens to start off, Mr “it is a photo lens specialist”. Exact same focus breathing and exact same minimum focus distance. They have an other lens in their series, the 18-35, which has no focus breathing and a super close minimum focus distance. So obviously people want it to fit in. What somebody wants to shoot closer with ? If you would not be a super boring photographer or film maker you would have a bazillion ideas. Nobody is talking about macro lens work but you can not even use it to shoot a plate a little bit closer. If I want to have a slide over a tomato on a plate I get the tomato bigger in size from the 18-35, Mr I am so cool and just burp things without any knowledge to feel cool. And it is not a mid telephoto… it is a super 35 .. so it is a tele lens, that is xactly lile that but with t stops exists as a cine lens. Oh My .. some people 🤮
@@d_FLDE excuse me? Did I attack your your character? You are so professional but your response is so poorly worded and focused on many things other than the actual lens. It's barely even readable. If you watch the video it's clear why this lens exists. Yes Sigma has 18 35 with little focus breathing but it's definitely not NO focus breathing. But we re talking about an f1.8 mid tele/telephoto lens here. Everything is magnified at longer focal lengths. I thought a professional like you would know that? Only a person with no better arguments would come back and attack someone on character when they don't even know that person. Clearly I shouldn't have wasted my time even commenting on your post here. This lens is 8 or 9 years old. At time in the landscape no one was making such lenses. So for you to come and comment on a video talking about such an old lens means you don't understand the lens mechanics of the time and how much has changed. Even today, Sigma itself cannot improve on this design. There are NO f1.8 zooms out for super35 almost a decade later. You still haven't told me about an alternative? Yes there's a cine version ( I think you mean cine because you said cone?) But we re not talking about the cine version here are we?
@@getfmlr … nobody is using this lens at t2 or f1.8. The fact that you think a lens that is 8 years old sounds like outdated to you says it all. If you speak to people they wanted a companion to their 18-35 and that was not the one. The lens is unusable unlike you want to be shooting flowers and/ or are aged 60 plus. What is really sad.
@@d_FLDE Its not useable because if focus breathing and minimum focus are your only complaints then as a professional you should know....almost no one is racking focus from minimum to maximum so the focus breathing is not as crazy as some folks make it out to be. Focus distance...ever hear of diopters? Throw those on and you can go right up to whatever you want. With so many lens options these days, both photo and cine, don't know why anyone is dying to find a companion to 18 35. Just get a proper cine zoom set from Laowa, DzoFilm etc. It's just that no one wants to pay for it, right? Hmmmm.... Shooting flowers and aged 60 plus. You are right I'm not a professional like you....a professional troll.
